If you've never heard a Canadian say "aboot", you must not have spent a lot of time around south central Canada (Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta), because it's quite clear in their accents. It's especially strong in people from around Calgary or Winnipeg. Listen to an interview by Chris Jericho or Bret Hart, you will hear it. You can also hear it to a far lesser extent in Americans from around Minnesota and Wisconsin.
