I've been playing e-guitar for about 2,5 months now (I've played acoustic for about 5 years before that). Fast alternate picking was quite difficult in the beginning, but it has become a lot better
Now to my question: lets say you got something like that:

First I need to pick 2 strings at the same time, which means only using the pick wouldn't be enough, cause i could play onyl one string then. But right after that I need the pick again. What shall I do with the pick while i need to play 2 strings at the same time? Laying it away would take much too long. Would be great if someone could help

Firstly, in the example you've given you should just drive the pick through both strings as one continuous stroke. But if for some reason you had to use your finger, just pluck up with your middle finger. There's no point to put the pick away unless it's something difficult to fingerpick, but that's fairly rare.

Yup, your just strumming the two strings in that example.

And for passages where you actually do not need the pick, I usually put it between my lips (or on the rare occasion I'd need to sing while playing without my pick, I'd put it in my mouth).

learn to just be able to just hit the top two strings. just dont make the stroke down as long. watch ure pick hand and see how much is needed to pick those two strings before u stop. it helps when you begin to learn to strum specific strings that, lets say, if u just wanted to hit the first two strings, then u hit them and rest ure pick on the 3rd string. it'lls top you from going further than u have to go. and gives u an idea when to stop. then try to do it without resting it on the string below it.


for two notes thats on strings far aprt from each other:
if u had someting liek this

then pick the low note with a pick and pluck the high note with ure middle finger or ring finger. this is called chicken picking i believe. if there's more notes than just two on the tab then try using both middle and ring.

I figured it out for myself (though it took me a lot of time).While writing this tab I didnt't have the problem with the pick, as the song wasn't too fast and it was almost free of riffs where the problem described in the first post occured.
