Playing on the Offbeat

I was wondering exactly what playing on the off beat is say you are in 9/8 or 7/8 how would you go about playing on the offbeat so to speak or 5/4 or 3/4? Id like a good explanation if possible thanks.

Lol, thats quite weird sentence, but i think playing on the off beat would be hitting ur root note after a snare hit. or something to that affect.. can you explain more what you want in the explanation.

Playing a note on a non-emphasised beat (or subdivision of the beat).

If your 9/8ths bar is grouped 3+2+2+2, the bar could be described as _--_-_-_- where "_" is emphasised and "-" is non-emphasised. Playing on the -s would be playing off beat.
