Yeah, and tapping with the finger is mandatory if you want to practice those advanced techniques such as tab bends and vibratos and so forth. So people who intend to learn this stuff should not even get used to tapping with the pick.
Personally I think both techniques have their advantages. I think that finger-tapping sounds much warmer and more "organic" while pick-tapping is rather cold and mechanical. It is however good for solos with high notes up the fretboard. In these cases the pick just adds more power to the tap.
A typical pick-tapping solo would be Metallicas One solo.
And...You should try tapping the intro of Death's Philosopher with a pick. You'll go mad I suppose.

......? Its like saying your fingers ruin the fretboard.....I mean it might wear it down the smallest amount eventually, but think about it when you finger/pick-tap, your finger or pick is just hitting the string, how would that ruin your fretboard......... Just use common sense.

In general, I use my pick to tap but I do use my fingers on occasion (like when I'm tapping with more than one finger).

I prefer my fingers for most of the reasons stated here, but it depends on what I'm going for. With the finger it has that very, very fluid legato sound we probably all heard for the first time towards the end of 'Eruption;' the pick I find gives a slightly harder, harsher sound that I like if I'm doing very fast, two or three note tapping. It doesn't get that smooth, atmospheric sound, but that's not always what's wanted.

Actually, he does use his finger. I know for a fact as he discussed in a Guitar World article a few years back.

Oh you bet it would! But if your playing the most evil, grim, necro, black, death, Christ killing, metal known to Satan himself then who cares what it sounds like as long as you got you face paint, blood, and keyboards to insure that you are the shit!
Also, if your lucky, the knife pick might cut you a little. Then you would be extra evil because you would have your own real blood to show everyone and a little pain to go along with it. That would make you even more dark

Are you trying to imply that black metal guitarists are good enough to employ even the most basic tapping techniques?
