Speed training
anyone have any tips on speed training?
i've been working on tryign to up my speed but my arm keeps tensing up so i mess up. or my fingers dont hit the right note when i play too fast.
i'm trying to play technical difficulties by Racer x. the fast triplet parts mess me up cause i cant play that fast.
anyone know any speed excersizes?
O and anyone know when you actually use the afterburner? i know wat it does but when i use it i get massive feedback and i'm better off just not using it. its kind of a waste since my guitar came with it. when do you actually use it in a song cause i feel liek if i turn it on during a solo it'll jsut feedback and just sound horrible. is it cause i'm ODing on the amp too much?

Start slow and gradually speed up, constant practice/repitition, practice all down-picking then move on to double-picking...there are about 132 million threads on the topic, all you gotta do is search for them.

yeah wish i knew how to use them properly cause right now its worse using them than not. i just get feeds. maybe i'm putting too much gain on the amp. but then i might as well use high gain on the amp than the afterburner. although the AB does give me better lows than the gain on the amp.
yeah that's what i been doing, start slow and gradually speeding up. i have a zoom 707 that has a built in drum machine so thats what i use. but i always seem to get stuck at the same bps. my arms always start to tense up when i reach it. i use that song, technical difficulties, last resort, master of puppets, or sometimes chromatic scales to practice speed. i keep increasing it. but then i can never break 240. after a few seconds i start messing up. can never break it, and when i hear other people just go "Ludicris speed" man it just makes me wanan give up.

how long have you been trying to break that level for?.....its not some shit you can do in like a week or two and be totally fluid with it. Just take it nice and slow at first....better yet, just sit there and play like straight sixteenths up and down on an open low E....and move it up and down the fretboard, just make sure you keep your left and right hand locked in, or it will sound like shit. NEVER give up either man. Its not worth being a pussy about it....drive through that fucking pain!!!!

Keep up the chromatics. If you are talking about 16th chromatic notes, then 240 isn't bad at all. Just keep practising. There is no magical potion that you can take that will make you any faster. No viagra that will speed up your fingers.
Practise practise practise

well, I would just not get frustrated...keep trying to learn songs...like slayer and metallica ot whatever you like thats fast. How long have you been playing guitar for? I didn't really start to get fast until like my 3rd or 4th year of playing. Just stick with it bro., that is the best advice I can give you.

As soon as you hit that wall, where you mess up, step back to where you can do it comfortably, and repeat the phrase that you messed up, over and over again, until it feels like you know it. Then step up again, a little at a time, repeating the phrase many times at each increment, and you should be getting past that wall sooner or later.
You mention that you start messing up after a few seconds. That means you're either playing too fast to begin with, or hitting a difficult part after a few seconds. If it's a difficult part, do what I said above. If it's really not more difficult than what you just played, you need to get your general speed up. Do what I said above, with just about anything that feels uncomfortable. John Petrucci, guitarist of Dream Theater, mentions in his instructional video Rock Discipline, a phrase basicaly consisting of putting your fingers down 1-2-3-4 on the fretboard, moving on to the next string, doing the same thing, and just keep ascending. If you can do that at any certain speed, learn to do it 1-3-2-4 and 1-3-4-2 and whatever other combinations possible. When you start getting them all up to speed, go a little faster. Also, try stepping from string to string in the middle of a 1-2-3-4 pattern, so 1 and 2 would be on for example your D string and 3 and 4 on your low E. Keep messing with the stuff that feels strange until it doesn't feel strange anymore.
And, practice practice practice!

3-------------------------------------------------------------14-16-17-
4---------------------------------------------------14-16-17-----------
5-----------12-14-15------------14-15-17-14-15-17--------------------
6-12-14-15-----------14-15-17-----------------------------------------
1----------------------------------------17-19-20-----------19-20-22-
2-------------------------------17-19-20----------19-20-22-----------
3-----------16-17-19-16-17-19----------------------------------------
4-16-17-19------------------------------------------------------------
1-----------15-----------------15-17-19-------------------------------
2-15-17-19----19-17-15-17-19--------------------15------------------
3----------------------------------------------------------------------
4----------------------------------------16-17-19----19-17-16-17-19-
3-16-17-19-----------14-----------------14-16-17-----------14---------
4-----------14-16-17----17-16-14-16-17--------------------------------
5--------------------------------------------------14-15-17----17-15-14
4-----------14-16-17--------------------------------------------------12
5-14-15-17---------------------14-----------------14-15-17-------------
6---------------------14-15-17----17-15-14-15-17-----------12-14-15---
5-----------------12-14-15-----------------|
