Dark Angel
Have anyone heard of this amazing thrash band? I just recently listened again for long time their "Darkness Descends" album and it really stunned me, very fast and brutal music, amazing riffs and torturing Gene Hoglan's drumming, which worked together perfectly. The quality of this album is totally unique, and only Slayer's Reign in Blood music is even close to this album's level.
What are this band doing at the moment and are their other albums as good as the Darkness Descends?

Yeah, I know them. I wouldn't be surprised if almost everybody here knew them, either. They're one of those bands that seems like an undiscovered treasure when you first find them, but which pretty quickly turn out to be somewhere on everybody's favorite thrash list. And everybody has a favorite thrash list.
Anyway, they broke up in the early 90s after releasing a few more records - I know of Leave Scars and Time Does Not Heal, there may have been more - and aside from Gene Hoglan, who went on to drum for Death, SYL, and everybody else, I don't know what the former members have been doing.

Dark Angel were definitely part of the cream of the crop in the thrash scene. Well, at least they were after their highly mediocre first album, We Have Arrived. Darkness Descends was great, Leave Scars was nothing short of classic (aside from the terrible Zeppelin cover), and Time Does Not Heal (their last album) was very good (not close to Leave Scars, though). Good stuff from those ones.
Did they do a reunion tour a couple years ago or something? I think I remember reading that somewhere.

Well, Dark Angel did a one night reunion show with Kreator and Destruction, and then, although they claim to be active, it doesn't look like much will be happening.
Hoglan is in about fifty bands, and Jim Durkin went on to form Dreams of Damnation and Pagan War Machine.
Dark Angel are a good thrash band. Darkness Descends is alot like Reign in Blood, but better. Reminds me of the band: Like Slayer, but better.

I wouldn't go so far as to say what Anubis said, but they'll probably initially remind you of Slayer. After a few listens, if they still really sound alike, you're not paying close enough attention. Most of the early thrash bands were fairly distinct; it's the later ones that sound like Slaytallica and Megathrax.
They're noticeably more disciplined (all their songs have a definite, regular structure, which can only be said about Slayer songs about half the time, if that often) and more skilled as musicians, but it never added up to better songs for me. Plus, Doty's vocals never grew on me like Tom's eventually did.

Darkness Descends is way better than Reign in Cum but Show No Mercy is WAY WAY better, But IMO Dark Angel sounds more like Possessed (on the 2nd album) and Kreator (on the first two)

Anyway, I'd agree with the Possessed/Kreator assessment. Not completely, but more so than Slayer.

Dude, that album is so fucking hard to find. I ordered it from local CD stores six times.
I ended up getting it when I saw Exodus and Dreams of Damnation. DOD's guitar player is Jim Durkin, who used to play for Dark Angel. They had all but their last album there, but other then that, I haven't seen it anywhere.

Well, apparently it's both hilarious and so insulting to the band that they refuse to so much as acknowledge that he's said it as they hide in their mothers' homes, heads hidden under pastel paisley-patterned pillows she knit for them. I can't imagine how embarassed Slayer must be by his assessment of Reign in Blood, especially after that album's struggled so much since its release.

As a matter of fact, I've heard that in tribute to him, Slayer have now changed the lyrics of "Raining Blood", they changed the title of the song to "Raining Cum", and they play it over the music to the 70's hit "It's Raining Men". They've decided to quit being poseurs and just admit the truth, after having their slimy bellies exposed to the light of truth and justice.
Myrmidonlord666, no offense intended. Well, not in a belligerent way.
