Don't get me wrong, I like black sabbath, but they are a bit overrated, I mean all they really did was poorly immitate the blues style at the time, even though they supposably did "invent" metal. I heard the first band to actually come out to write that kind of stuff was some band called "Iron Butterfly"

Doom Metal - Kinda slow, and has a "doomy" sorta sound, usually low, or at least heavy. Vocals can be clean, or typical growl and scream (though screams not as much). Or at least that's what I think it is.
And I didn't know that BS was Doom metal either, but now that I think about it, they are.

doom in general is often underrated because it isn't terribly complex or brutal, it relies more on songwriting *shrug* ok i'm too tired to think but yeah, it's still my fav genre, probly cause black sabbath changed my life

Doom is slow metal that usually has growled vocals. Most doom bands use the Acoustic and Distorted Electric combinations in their songs. (fuck, I'm not good at explaining this)
Here is an example. A song of agalloch's (not their best by any standard, but the only MP3 I could find).
Agalloch - I am the Wooden Doors

Apart from Black Sabbath, the only doom band that I'll listen to is High On Fire. Pretty decent racket for a three-piece.

There's a lot of debate about who invented metal, mostly because experiments with distortion and metal-style riffs abounded in the mid- to late-60s. Some people will say Iron Butterfly for 'In-a-Gadda-da-Vida;' some Hendrix for things like 'Fire,' 'Foxy Lady,' and 'Purple Haze;' some Clapton for riffs like 'Sunshine of Your Love;' some people credit Pete Townshend; some people credit Steppenwolf, especially since they came up with the term 'heavy metal;' some will give it to Led Zeppelin because, well, why the hell not? I remember discussing this with a music teacher in high school and having him whip out some record from '64 with some band I hadn't heard of - and can't remember the name of - playing a distorted riff that sounded something like 'Foxy Lady.' I still stick with Sabbath because, regardless of the fact that they aren't the first to turn on the distortion and play a blues riff over in the first position, they're the people who stuck with it and developed it. Everyone else has maybe a riff or two, whereas Iommi has classic riff after classic riff, all of which are definitely metal. And though they did start out very bluesy, and fortunately never lost the blues feel completely, riffs like 'Into the Void,' 'Children of the Grave,' 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,' 'Sympton of the Universe,' etc, are not like the heavy blues that people had been playing before. They're metal, and that's worth noting, because nothing really had sounded like that before. Plus, lest we forget, he's the guy who put his riffs into C# tuning for a little extra balls.
As for doom, I never really got into it.

Doom is more or less latter day Sabbath; so, retroactively, one might say Sabbath is doom. I wouldn't.

type o negative could be doom, goth metal isn't a genre it's a style, for example if a band talks about sex and vampires in their lyrics, wears all black and shit but does instrumentation like nile, they have goth stylings but are deaht metal. type o has goth styling but definitely could be considered doom... that being said add them to my favorite doom list
oh yeah and i'd call novembers doom more melodic death, tho i guess that one is a cross genre band, they kick ass though.
and thanks for mentioning some doom i haven't heard of, i'm checking alot of them out now

Yeh, I've got their Stormcrowfleet album a few weeks ago. I like it, but it still needs a few more listens, I never heard anything like that before.

An Aussie melodic death-doom band The Eternal for me Also, My Dying Bride. I'm not much into doom, I only like death-doom. Paradise lost's "Gothic" was awesome.

Sweet, this is my style of metal. Hm, some bands then:
-Reverend Bizarre
-Electric Wizard
-Saint Vitus
-Woods of Belial
-Candlemass
-Krux
-Black Manta
-Black Sabbath (obviously)
-Worship
-Doomvs
-Aarni
-Grief
-Shape of Despair
-Planet Gemini
-Trouble
-Solitude Aeternus
-Witchfinder General
-Starchild
-Serpent Rise
-Orodruin
-Count Raven
-the Warning
-Minotauri
Doom metal is quite hard genre to define, but traditional doom is mostly brutal, the best example would be of course the song "Black Sabbath", quite minimalistic playing and harsh, 'doomy' sounds. And what comes to the subcategories, they can be pretty much anything, as funeral doom is often ultra -slow music combined with deep growls etc. Sometimes doom can be even quite up-tempo too, such as Planet gemini, but they are still doom because of their 'image' and the main concept of the music.

oh yeah, if you like noisey/punky sort of doom, then check out toadliquor
if you like viking doom (whatever that is) check out thor's hammer (aaaah, viking) - though I don't think they even put anything onto a CD, just tapes. Anyway, does anyone know if the woman in thor's hammer did the growls as well as the operatic stuff?
or, just go to the southern lord records webshite....there's a shit load of stoner-doom there....

I haven't heard much doom but I like Cathedral for what I've heard of them.
"Yeah, Lucifera, yeah!"
An old song of theirs, I think it was Cathedral anyway, came on telly a bit ago, it had like really cadaverous-sounding death metal vox in it and the video had tons of graveyard images in it, anyone know it? The name wasn't mentioned...
