Cutting a hole in your bassdrumskin
I have seen on many gigs that drummers have cut a hole in their bassdrum themselves (you know, for a mic). all of the skin around the hole was heavily taped and such.
any idea how I should do this without fucking things up? Or is it just cutting away and taping all the cracks afterwards? I'm gonna gig soon with my drum.

Can you cut a hole out of the head, even if your not using a mic? Just to experiment with the sound? What will that do?

heheh
in all seriousness, cutting a small hole makes it sound a little bit more open and it doesnt affect the speed of the drum much, and you can stick a mic in. taking the front head off makes it sound wide open but it feels like kicking mud, but the micing works there too.
you don't need to buy a hole cutting kit, you just need something like a coffee can and an exacto knife to cut a small hole.

You can just buy a drum head with a hole already cut in it. Thats what i would do.

yeah and remember once you cut, it is nigh impossble to undo whatever you have done, if you have any old skins you might want to 'experiment' on those alittle before trying anything.

Buy a kit for it, it comes with protection rings for the hole to make sure it doesn't start tearing apart + the change to fuck up your skin while cutting is very smaller.
so my advise, don't it yourself with a coffee can or whatever. And make sure you cut the hole in the right place, and not to small or to large. If you place the hole to low or to high there's a change the mic. can't get in your bass because the mic stand won't allow you to position it that low or high

ok heres what you're going to do. walk up to your bass drum, looking at the face. back up about 20 paces. run forward full speed and kick the drum. this should make a perfect circle with a perfect 2 inch radius and it will sound 10 times better. try it

why would you want to do that? just remove the head completely...that makes it possible to re-fix it too.
