Well it's good that you are doing that, because it will help you find notes better. When I started soloing I usually did it in a box, but kind of slowly. I liked to let some notes ring. Also I learned A lot of the scales all over the fretboard and When I would find that two scales shared a note, if I was done laying one box pattern, I would switch to that one. Also, for good dynamics add a Pinch Harmonic where needed and good ols bends. The thing metal solo's are usally known for is tapping and stuff so learn some scales from the 12th fret down on the high E and B (and why not G too!)strings. When you tap you have to make sure you know the notes that you are playing sound good when tapped, so just noodle around. One final tip would be, play wiht your emotions!!! !very important! (to me anyway!) If you feel a bend is needed, or letting the note ring out more or you want to do whatever, do it! See what sounds good. Have fun!
