no way to tell.

all tubes sound different, theres no way to tell how a certain tube will sound in your amp because every amp is different from another.

for instance, Sovtek tubes are really high gain (their AX7lps's that is) but that won't guarantee that they will sound great in your amp.

theres only one way to find out and thats heaps of testing. I've tried a load of tubes and I allways pick JJ's for power tubes for some reasons (Svetlana's come second) because they sound really warm. but it may differ in other amps too, I mean you just can't compare a Vox ac30 to a Mesa recto

el34's, el84's, and kt66's are more known to have a quicker breakup than 6l6's and kt88's....
i love el84's for the quick breakup and tight(even dark) sound they can give... for headroom and HUGE sound nothing beats kt88's imo.... period.. 6l6's don't even compare in that sound, but for some reason 6l6's seem to be the tube of choice in most tops & poweramps these days.

every tube has it's own characteristics though, and it all depends on the amp... every body wants a different sound.... for example, i find that i like the sound of rectos more with el34's than the 6l6's they come stock with, because they tighten and cut out some of the lows(but they still have more than enough) and they give a warmer sound with more zing and crunch especially in the vintage & clean modes.

as for brands... mullards are the shit, but don't bother because they're hella expensive & rare NOS stuff... so you really have got to be a dedicated tube snob to run some mullards in you rig(s).

other than that, jj's rock my socks... i used to be all about sovteks, but jj's have me hooked.
svet's are good,
eh's preamp tubes are pretty nice,
ruby tubes and groove tubes rock imo, but it's kinda personal taste in the way they sound... alot of people hate em'.

yeah, but what I said applies on all tubes, its all about your amp and how hot your amp runs the tubes.

Ruby tubes are the most shittiest I EVER had. I had el84's, 8 of them and they totally sucked... GT's aren't nearly as bad as Ruby's man..

Mullards are great for vintage stuff, I had some mullard/philips preamp tubes, not bad, but not for metal at all. good for in a Vox ac30 though.

6l6's are typically american, mesa and the likes use them, over here the preference seems to be with the EL34 and EL84's. thank god for that, because they just sound better.
KT66's? I know Sovtek made those. JJ's has stopped them a long time ago even when they where still called 'Tesla' I haven't tried anything with those in them, but I tried heaps of other tube amps with EL's

KT88's are neat, though once again not great if you want tube saturnation, you're better off with EL34's or EL84's even. EL34's seem to have more bottom end then EL84's, JJ tubes have more bottom end then Sovtek's, the sovteks are more mid orientated, but it depends on your amp too (Engl's are extremely high gain and not so much bottomy.)

my friend had his modded by Jerry P so he could run el34's, it was muddy and undefined. But hey, every has their own taste.

the 5150 uses 6L6's, and IMO they sound MUCH better than el34's in the 5150.

5150's sound even more muddy and unrefined with 6l6's imo... el34's have a sharper, more crisp zing to them.... to each his own...
but they come stock with sovtek 6l6's.
my guitarist is using 6l6's in his right now, the jj's are a big improvement in his tone.

Yeh, the JJ's are nice as hell.

Maybe if the 5150 was designed to run el34's than it wouldnt sound so ass-like, but like i said it was modded by JerryP to run el34's.. not to sound good with them
