umm... how? because it uses 6l6 powertubes and 12ax7 preamp tubes? has distortion and clean settings?
sorry to dissapoint you, but non of that means jack.... there are dozens of different head out there that have those similarities yet are nothing a like.

so if your definition of awesome is the st-100a then i don't think the 5150 is what you're looking for... because it actually sounds good where as the st-100a doesnt.

eh, not really. it sounds nothing like the Savage, I have a Savage and a 620 preamp. the 620 is the same as a 530 but a little more simple, and outdated. but the basic circuitry is the same. the savage is much more brutal and its more versatile. though the 530 does have the Engl sound.

530's are about 400 here, used.

Thunder heads go for 700 new, Screamers for 900 new, Powerballs go for 1400 or so, they're 1800 new. Fireballs are 1200 new, and go for like 8-900 used. Savage 120's go for 2300 new, E670's (Savage ltd edition with midi) for about 3000.


I think xdx meant to say 'you can get a fireball' at the same price of a 530+ a nice poweramp. that would sound about right. if you lay down 400 for a nice poweramp.

try and find them all in one shop and find out for yourself, the savage slays the fireball/powerball, the 530 is really different then both tops. ofcourse it depends on the poweramp you're using too. tone-wise I'de say it sounds like an Engl in general, but not like any of their tops. I haven't played it with an engl poweramp though, it was hooked up to a mesa 2:50. which I'm not particulary fond of...

where the hell can you get a new 5150 for $450?????

if you want to talk used gear then yeh, the 5150 is mucho cheaper because peavey has crappy resale....
but rocksolidamps.com sells the fireball for $1,200 new... which is only a couple hundred more than a new 5150.
the screamer 50 and thunder 50 are about the same cost as the 5150, even cheaper at some places.

I'de probably prefer a Screamer head above a 5150. seriously, not volume wise, but tone wise, 50w tubes is loud enough for any medium sized gig, as long if you got good monitors and a decent pa system. You guys are getting screwed over though, everything european is way more expensive over there.

I think the 530 doesn't 'copy' the fireball/powerball or savage in its sound, it does have the typical engl high gain distortion, ofcourse it does come close to both tops, but they're not an exact match. I guess thats what that guy way trying to say?

I heard america sucks for guitar stores. but I'm a spoiled motherfucker with world's biggest guitar store just two hours away in Ibbenburen, Germany. or at least, they claim to be the biggest guitar store in the world. their drum deparment is like two floors of a relatively big building. don't even get me started about the guitar/amp deparment, the first time I walked in there I allmost fainted. I spent at least 5 hours there everytime I go and I never ever leave the place empty handed. haha
