cynic, atheist...
how long as it been since these guys disbanded? quite some years now. but that's besides the point.
are there any recent bands (aside from Spiral Architect and maybe Theory In Practice) that sound like they did? you know, the jazz/death metal thing.

All I know is that a couple of former members formed a band called aghora which is pretty good. It's metal but definitly not death.
BTW, Veil of Maya fucking rules!!

I don't know of any recent bands, but if you like those two bands, you would definitely like Watchtower. You've probably already heard of them, but if you don't have any of their stuff, get it as soon as possible. You won't be disappointed, it's brilliant. It's more thrash/jazz than it is death/jazz, though.

Actually, humans can't hear dog whistles. The vocals are mixed in well and are very audible, so I'm not so sure what you mean. Do explain.

So are you trying to say that Christian Vikernes is a better vocalist than Tom Araya? Good Lord, this is heresy!

My name is Christopher. That's worse than Christian. Christian is one who believes in Christ. Christopher means Christ Bearer. I never changed my name to try to make myself look like a hardass, aryan viking. Vikernes needs to stop choking on cocks. I really like Araya's vox on all the albums except probably the first.
I like the vocalist from Watchtower, but I can see why you don't. It's kind of hard for me to see how you don't, though, just because Christian sound like a prepubescent boy with diarrhea. What do you think of Russ Anderson from Forbidden? I really like him. This would probably be better discussed in a different post, but we are already off topic, so what the fuck...

Not Christ beater, Christ BEARer. With no T's. Forbidden is aggressive thrash, if you like thrash you need to hear them right away. Their first album, Forbidden Evil, is one of the best metal albums ever. Avoid their last album, it's rather nu-metal/hard rockish. The albums in between are very good.

There are a ton of bands who hopped the bandwoagon and tried the whole death with jazz influece, but nobody ever really did it well.
Cynic and Atheist nailed it.

Like who? I'm not saying that to be a smartass, I'm really asking. I've never heard anything along those lines except for Watchtower, or maybe Slayer (SA). I'd really like to hear anybody else who tried it, even if they failed. I'm curious.

Pestilence is one that I never really got into. Anghora as well (comrised of Cynic members actually...) and there's Alarum (Aussie band).
There are more if you want to look it up.
