Well, there used to be more there! haha. Those one's are a few years old now, but I find them much better fresh. Can't get them in my province anymore unfortunately, as well as any of the Belgiums in that picture except Delirium Tremens. GHEY.
Tranz - LOZ.
Blitz - 8%abv, brewed for a couple of months in the Winter time. Really good stuff.

I'm going crazy here with no beer..but luckily it's not far away! Our class just got secured and can go on on-base liberty today until midnight. Sooner or later the rules for our liberty will get more relaxed and we'll be allowed to have alcohol, so I'll definitely be going to this place out in town that brews their own beer! Haven't had a drink since the night before I checked into OCS on April 13th.
How's it going with all you guys? Try and new good beers?
I heard AB got sold to some Swedes. haha

I can't get over how delicious (and potent!) Duvel is. Shame on the price, though.
Bought a 6-pack of Samuel Adam's Summer Ale last night. Its good, although I'm not sure if I'd get it again.
I think I've managed to try everything Samuel Smith has to offer. Definitely one of my favorite brewers.

Just got done visiting Prague, there are some great beers here. I went to a few taverns and resturants, such as one where an executioner used to live and another where monks brewed "holy beer." and of course, I had quite a few pilsners for wherever there wasnt a unique beer.
I'm not a big fan of hard drinks, but I bought a bottle of absinth and also some vodka with cannabis seeds in it. hopefully it wont be hard to bring back in my luggage to the states, if I find out its not a good idea to try ill just drink it all

I made up a new sporting event with my friend today called "The Beer Olympics." Events included 'the backstrokin' chug,' 'the backstrokin' cigarette smoke,' 'the underwater chug' and 'jumping into an inner tube while simultaneously chugging and landing in the tub whilst still chugging.' Shit was fun.

Samuel Smith FTW.
Halifax Seaport Beerfest is on the 16th. The only thing I'm really looking forward to is the Allagash booth, since you can't get their products here. Any of you have experience at beer festivals?

Unfortunately, no. Wish I could make it, but that seems like a long drive. Still don't have permission to drink alcohol just yet..should be coming around soon though. Out in town there are a number of good choices, on base is fairly limited. I've seen some Sam Adams (probably boston lager) and a local brewing company called Newport Storm on tap at one bar on base.

Nope, can't say that I have.
Today we hit up the package store (liquor store on base) to see what their beer selection is like. They have one of the best selections I've seen up here so far. Going to pick up either some Smuttynose IPA or Red Hook Black Hook Porter.

I bought a 4-pack of Old Speckled Hen the other day. Pretty damn good ale. Anyone else tried this?

Grolsch is a tasty lager if you like Dutch beer.
Is Brooklyn Lager any good?

How is that relevant to what I posted?

Nope, it actually has nothing to do with cola, I found some info on about.com :
According to the Texas Handbook Online, prior to a 1963 district court ruling bottlers could not carry Dr Pepper along with Pepsi-Cola or Coca-Cola without violating their franchise contracts because they were not permitted to bottle competing brands. But in 1963 the United States Fifth District Court in Dallas declared that Dr Pepper was not a cola, thus allowing Dr Pepper to expand its reach.

Old Speckled Hen should've been ran through the horse. Carling and alot of other english beers beat OSH any day. German beer kicks english beers ass though, so this is entirlely irrelevant.

What the hell do you mean by "ran through the horse"?
I agree with what you said about German beers though, they pwn most English beers. But I still like OSH and Fuller's ESB.

has anyone ever actually tried putting cheap vodka through a water filter to improve the quality? i've heard this works from many different sources but never met anyone who's actually tried it.

I've heard the name, but have never seen it in a store. Where is it from?

It does work, they did that on Mythbusters. The more filtrations the better(I think they did it a maximum of six times). It ranked better but still didn't compare to the top shelf vodka.
I went to the 2nd Annual Halifax Seaport Beer Festival on Saturday. Talked to my old boss and brewmaster at Garrison. Bought a signed book from the author of Sociable! The Elbow Bender's Guide to Maritime Pubs.Pretty neat read with a lot of cool facts and interesting articles. Now I'll have to try to go to all of these pubs.
The beer selection at the festival was fairly decent, although there wasn't much I didn't have already. Pump House from New Brunswick put out a new double IPA which is called Deliverance. It's brewed by my former BM at Garrison and 8.2%abv of well-balanced hop nirvana. It's not in stores yet(at the brewery/brewpub in Moncton I assume) but hopefully it get wide distribution.
Not much micros there from the States unfortunately. Geary's, Shipyard, Allagash and Sebago from Maine. I was excited to try some of Allagash's beers but they only brought a white beer and their 'black' ale.
A local private store which carries 6-7 Dieu Du Ciel offerings had them all there which was a treat. Nothing like a few cup fulls of Peche Mortal's to start the evening. I also bought a St. Ambroise snifter glass and a shirt from their booth.
Not a bad effort coming from Halifax. You guys should find out any upcoming beer festivals in your area, round up a few friends and go to them!

Sounds like a great time. Unfortunately there are no beer festivals in my city. The only thing that comes remotely close to a 'beer festival' in this city is the annual Oktoberfest, and having no German heritage myself, I'm not really interested in going
However, I will admit that beer sure does go good with a sauerkraut frankfurter

Woo Beer.
I finally drank a bomber(split with a friend) of Southern Tier Unearthly Double IPA.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/28577
At 11%abv, this thing is a bomb, but very delicious at the same time. Very smooth hop taste throughout. You can't get these in my province but I know Ontario and I think the West now gets Southern Tier. You American guys should be able to find it, especially seeing how it's brewed in upstate N.Y.
I also had a bottle of Weltenburger Kloster Asam-Bock I also received in a recent beer trade.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1315/3606
Really excellent stuff. Very low bitterness which is dominant of toasted malt sweetness. The smell reminded me of fresh spent grain still in the mash tun when I worked at the brewery. Alcohol is very well masked. Hunt this beer down and buy it.
I also had a bunch of St. Ambroise Apricot ale which are perfect for summer and some random Dieu Du Ciel beers, which include their Peppercorn beer, Hibiscus beer, Abbey Blonde and IPA.

Sounds pretty good! Had a few tasty beverages last night. Some Smuttynose IPA (really good stuff!), a local smoked porter which was also pretty damn good. I'll have to buy some more or just try their other beers and get the name. Other than that, I had a bottle of Stone Russian Imperial Stout..awesome beer..pretty strong too. Last but not least I had a bottle of Sierra Nevada 2008 Harvest Ale. Smoked a decent cigar with the Stone RIS...all in all it was a nice night.
Found out that there is a Total wine and more located in Norfolk, VA so that is going to kick ass! Unfortunately, I'll have just missed an annual beer festival they have there..at least I'll be there for the next one. Unless I'm deployed on my ship.

I've heard of all of those beers and I'm jealous.
You've been to festivals before haven't you graf? How did you find them? My gripe about the first and last one I went to was a lack of restrooms, cheap little tasting mug and a small beer selection. My girlfriend and I are thinking about planning a trip next summer to go to Mondial in Montreal, which is supposed to be the biggest annual beer festival in North America..it's 10 days long!

Went to a concert on base tonight..was Huey Lewis and the News. haha Anyway..it was sponsered by Sam Adams, so obviously there was some SA to be had. Primarily it was a choice of SA Boston Lager, SA Light, or SA Summer Ale. I stuck with the Summer Ale..
They had another tent which had two new potential shelf beers..you could try each and vote. The winner will become a new SA beer that will be available to the masses. The choices were a Blackberry Witbier or a Coffee Stout. My immediate reaction was "mmmm coffee stout!" but I must say the witbier was surprisingly good because it wasn't overly fruity...it had more of a subtle blackberry taste which I thought was really good. The coffee stout fell victim to my pet peave of coffee/java stouts..too much coffee flavor. I prefer to have more subtle notes in there rather than a dominant flavor. If I want to taste coffee, I can drink some damn coffee. The descriptions were as follows...
BW: "We brewed a traditional witbier with orange peel and coriander, then added a hint of blackberry. The aroma has distinct blackberry notes with a subtle spice character. The flavor is very complex with malt and cereal notes, intense spice and sitrus flavors and a smooth, sweet/tart berry finish."
CS: "This stout is "dry beaned" with coffee beans from Rwanda. Known as the "land of a thousand hills", Rwanda produces some of the world's finest coffee due to its volcanic soil, high altitude and plentiful rain. We start with a clean dry stout, brewed with a bit of smoked malt and dark roasted barley, and then age it for one week on whole coffee beans - 3/4 of a pound per barrel. The result is rich and roasty with obvious coffee flavor and underlying noters of chocolate, toast and smoke. It finishes intense but smooth."
I'd say both are pretty good descriptions of each.
edit.. Oh yea...I guess I forgot to mention that I did wind up voting for the stout..though it was a tough call and am not sure I made the right choice. I kinda weighed it on the fact that I probably wouldn't buy a "blackberry witbier" as soon as I'd buy a "coffee stout"...who knows.
BassB - No, I've never been to a beer festival. I wish I had. Pissed that the Norfolk one just happened not too long ago. That one you are planning on going to sounds pretty badass! Hope you make it.

I forgot you were from Maine! They were all really good man. They had a really nice Pumpkin Ale as well, I think it was from Geary's. I think the Seadogs Blueberry Ale was there but I didn't try it.
Ooooh, a beer glass post! I'll have to take a picture of mine soon!

I haven't had good beer in almost a year.
I'm getting sick of Natural Ice, Coronas, Miller, and shitty brown ale.

I decided instead of going to University/trade school.. In the new year I'm going to start online courses through the Seibel Institute of Brewing Technology(Beer College lolz). Afterwards I'll have to go to Chicago and then Munich for my Brewmaster diploma.

hey BB so do you just keep your beer in your basement then drink it straight from there? I thought about doing that but by basement doesnt seem that cold, maybe like 10 degrees colder than upstairs is that enough?

I do cellar(age) high-percentage beers(6%abv and up usually) in the basement, and depending on the temperature, many of the higher percentage beers are ready to drink. Since it's the summer however, I'll throw em in the fridge for 15 minutes or so. My basement isn't finished so it gets pretty cold in the winter time.
Yes, most beer is best chilled or slightly chilled. Beer nerds usually like a beer better once it warms up a bit because it can really bring out complex flavours which are often masked by cold temperature. I refrigerate my beer, I just don't drink them ice fucking cold like some people. Cold isn't a taste!

You're right about chocolate; I've never really thought about it like that, but it's true. I'd rather drink water than warm beer.

An ice cold beer masks flavour. Once it warms up, you can taste how the beer really is..this is why so many 'mainstream beer' drinkers despise beer that isn't ice cold.
Budweiser is brewed with rice people..yummy, yummy rice.

Seriously? Even before it was bought by Belgium?
On another note, I recently tried Sapporo. Not too bad for a Japanese beer. Anyone else tried it?

I am looking forward to getting Sam Adams Winter Ale soon
That's the best beer I can find without much trouble here, so fuck it. It's the best I've had, so I have nothing to compare it to. Thus, it tastes wonderful in my book.
Bass, you should learn to develop a Euphori-Ale.

Yea, that is why they serve bud/miller/etc ice cold. No need to taste all of the subtle nuances or lack there of. I too refrigerate my beers, but if it's a big stout or nice Belgian, I drink it slowly and it warms up plenty by the time it's gone.
Over the past few days I've tried a lot of new beers..haven't had much time to take note of each or anything.. Some damn good beers all the same. Also..I just bought a St. Bernardus gift box that comes with 4 different beers and a nice glass. Currently enjoying the Abt 12. Mmmm
That's badass news Bassb! Good luck with become a Brew master. Maybe one day I'll try my hand at brewing again and we can trade beers.

I'm having a few beers tonight..watching some football at basstendencies house. Right now I'm drinking a wheat ale from Hawaii, Kona brewing co. that has some passion fruit in it. Before that I had a glass of La Fin du Monde and some oatmeal stout from a brewing company whose name I don't know and can't remember...haven't ever seen it before. Other than that, there's a bottle of Erdinger Hefeweizen dunkel and some boulder brewing co. mojo rising double IPA.

But I can't

Just found out that they do sell Seagram here, not 83, one called "Seagram VO". What's the difference between 83 and VO?

Yea, so far the Victory beers are pretty solid.
Heh the Dale's Pale Ale is pretty good. I first had it down in FL as a free sample at one of the beer stores there. Being that it's ONLY available in a can, not sure that I'd have ever tried it other than the free sample..it's good stuff though! I took home a 6 pack that night... I think that same brewery has a few other beers available in can form, but I haven't tried them yet.

I just got back from trip to Nashville and I picked up a mixed pack of Flying Dog. I really enjoyed what I tried. The Old Scratch Amber Lager is my favorite so far. I still have the gold ale, american wheat, and the porter to try.
