haha. It happens! I still haven't got my fucking bottles for my beer kit either.

I'm currently reading The Brewmaster's Table by Garrett Oliver in full. Very informative about brewing, beer styles/style pairings with food. Check it out.

Edit - Speaking of which, My dad brought me back 2 cans of Presidente from the Dominican. Far from outstanding, but if I close my eyes maybe I could try an escape this shitty Eastern Canadian weather. Last time I was there I was getting into good beer(April 2006? lolllol) and probably drank more rum than beer.
Probably the only way to drink it is guzzling it cold in 85F heat on a Punta Cana beach.

Well, the liquor store was only charging $5.19 per bottle which is a damn fine price. Now, it's going up to almost $7.....

Drinking a glass of Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier, a 'German style' wheat beer apparently. It's fucking excellent. Not too much fruitiness, which I like, and a delicious mild banana aftertaste. I'll definitely be buying more.

The only Belgian wheat beer I've tried is Hoegaarden, and if that's a good representation of the Belgian style and this Weihenstephan the same but of the German style, then those Bavarians definitely make the superior product.

I really want to explore German and other continental European beer now...I've been drinking English ales almost exclusively, but this German gem has fuelled my tastebuds for more.

I wish I could get my hands on that shit. I've heard of it for quite sometime now.

Good local beer news though. Garrison of Halifax is soon putting out a dunkel weizenbock. They are really going crazy with the styles as of late.

weihenstephan makes some great beers. my favorite is probably the hefeweissbier dunkel or the vitus. sadly, i've only had the vitus once since they didn't have it on sale in florida. a few other good germans to try are erdinger, franziskaner, ayinger, schneider and sohn, and paulaner.

as for the belgians..there are plenty of good ones. st. bernardus witbier is very good stuff..so are their other beers..particularly the abt 12 and christmas ale. sterkens makes a couple witbiers..and brouwerij de regenboog (regenboog brewery) makes a witbier called vuuve which was pretty tasty.

funny thing is, i think i know of more belgian-STYLE witbiers than actual belgian witbiers.

just got back from columbia, mo... quite a different situation than mexico, mo which is less than an hour away.

the store i wanted to hit up was closed, so i went to one i found through BA. they had a pretty nice selection..the sign said over 500 different beers. not sure they quite made it or not..didn't count, but there were more than enough to choose from. was hoping to happen across some victory or stone beers..nothing of the sort though.

to MB, they had several new belgians..including the ones you mentioned (abbey and trippel) as well as several others. unfortunately i had a limited budget and caved upon seeing some new (to me) bells beers. i wound up leaving with a 6er of bells double cream stout (a winter offering) and a 750 of unibroue chambly noire (a belgian dark ale). haven't tried either just yet, have to make a run to the store to make some chili tonight.

before i left columbia, i made a run by the flat branch brewing co. went there once before with my parents and had a good time. great beers all around, and good food. today i was (again, on a limited budget) there to try some of the rotating taps. had a baltic porter, milk stout, and an american pale ale. in that order. the baltic porter was stellar! i was VERY tempted to blow a bunch of the rest of my cash on a growler of that..just new i needed it later for gas and food. it was the best beer i've had there so far. nice roasted malt flavor..almost a molasses flavor to it after the initial roasted flavor. fairly heavy body. according to the bartender, it was the sole work of the assistant head brewer. the main brewer has nothing to do with this once a year offering and i guess they both (or just the assistant) only drink it while it's available. with good reason!

anyway...the milk stout was good..might have perceived it as better if i had it before that porter though. it had a distinct creamy feel and taste to it. you could see it in the head as well. a bit heavier than that porter..at least it seemed so after drinking the porter. not much of a roasty flavor to it...still pretty good though.

the APA was delicious as well..had a nice hoppy aroma and flavor. very citrusy tasting. not completely citrusy, but to the point where you definitely recognize it. i guess that is due to a malty backbone that rides very much in the back..almost out of sight. good stuff though.

if you are wondering about their beers..or ever in the columbia, MO area..this is their site: http://www.flatbranch.com/ click the pint to get in. they have descriptions of all their beers as well as what is currently on tap. they have a fairly extensive liquor bar too! with a focus on whisk(E)y. really wanted to try some of the talisker but couldn't at the time. hope to at least once before i leave.

Went to Garrison today. Met the Brewmaster. Tried a bottle of the new "Winter Weizenbock" about 15 minutes after I met him. Ending up chatting with him and the guys for 30 more minutes. Seems like a fun place to work..lots of beer drinking going around too. I left with three 500ml bottles of the Weizenbock and a bomber of the newest batch of Imperial Pale Ale, which is now over 7% and over 70ibus.

I start work tomorrow. I can't wait. lololol.

lucky bastard! want to fill in for me and go to OCS in april? i'll do my best at garrison.

sounds good man, like a dream come true!

right now i'm having some leinenkugel's big butt doppelbock http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/710/2464 i'd say the rating is pretty fair. good, not great or even "very good." the flavor lacks the robustness of the aroma. not as strong in alcohol as i would've guessed either considering it's a winter seasonal. ohh well..would drink it again, but it don't plan on buying more of it. i'd rather have some of their creamy dark lager.

went with my mom to a nearby city that is larger than where we live..was hoping to stop by the flat branch brewery again. didn't make it there though. we did stop by a grocery store which had a much nicer selection of beer than the one in our town. i took moe blizuntz word for it and got a 6 pack of new belgium abbey. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/192/1912 has a good rating, and a bit better than the other beer i was looking at which was a vanilla porter. (not a new belgium beer) there was a smoked porter from o'fallon brewing (a missouri brewer) that looked tempting but it was the most expensive beer there that i noticed.

funniest thing was that a 6 pack of that bud/bud light clamato stuff was only 1.10 less than a 6 of any of the new belgium beers! ha screw that! none of us in the house have tried that clamato stuff yet..still in the fridge.

hah i still can't get over that shit..you lucky bastard!

that stout sounds pretty good...just depends on the level of coffee flavor for me. i've had a java stout (or porter..i forget) and the coffee flavor was just too strong for me. (i don't drink coffee, that probably doesn't help.

a good IPA i had recently was goose island IPA. they're from chicago and have a few beers available to me here. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1146/3968 bottle conditioned and dericious!

tuesday i'm going into st. louis to complete an enlistment ceremony and am planning on having lunch at the schlafly bottleworks again.

Yeah, there was quite a rich coffee flavour to it, almost like a shot of espresso with each sip. It's actually labeled a 'coffee stout' when you translate what it says on the bottle into English. BA has it labeled 9%abv when it is actually 9.5%abv.

I'm looking forward to more beers they have in their cellar..everything from various Allagash styles, obscure Belgians, to aged Sierra Nevada Bigfoots.

Bought a big bottle of Young's Double Chocolate Stout. OMFG... it was wonderful. My mouth had a multiple orgasm upon taking the first sip. I drank it while smoking a Brazilian chocolate cigar, the combination of the two went together really nice. The stout isn't too filling either. Excellent stuff

Tasty stuff indeed.

I marinaded chicken thighs with Garrison Weizenbock, chicken stock, garlic powder, thyme, basil, and rosemary, which I had today at lunch. Add some toasted garlic cheese bread and a fresh mixed salad and you have a damn good meal.

Lastly, happy St. Patrick's Day. I'm getting up tomorrow at around 5:45am to catch the earliest bus to downtown Halifax. I have second row tickets to see the Irish Rovers at 4pm as well. Going to be a hellava day that's for sure. hahaha.

have been drinking the new belgium sunshine wheat. it reminds me a lot of a lighter version of hoegaarden..both in flavor and body. it's good, don't get me wrong..just doesn't taste as bold. also, it's crystal clear.

havent seen that. been working on various ommegang (by far my new fav) beers. also got a 6 of the sam adams white ale. it tastes pretty much identical to last years , to my recollection. maybe a little bit less of a chalky aftertaste. last nights it was just home from the grocery store when i had one....it tasted reallllyyyyy flat. maybe it was just warm and the temp threw me, because tonights seemed much more proper

Only in the 500ml bottle.

My brewmaster and packaging manager got fired Monday morning at Garrison. Assistant brewmaster quit this morning...I'm going to call them tomorrow to see if my job is still in order..

damn! that sucks man. hope you're still all good there. should be..sounds like they could use the help! why'd the shit hit the fan??

had some schlafly beer at their taproom today. first was a pint of oatmeal stout that i've tried before, next i had their IPA. both are great beers. i think the APA is better than the IPA. has a more distinct flavor..more of a citrus taste. the IPA is good..just doesn't really stand out compared to other IPAs.

right now i'm having some michelob cherry lager. it's the last of the beer from the AB rep...other than the clamato.

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/39005

reviews seem fair. at first it tastes kinda bitter and almost metallic..then it kinda smooths out and has a mild cherry sweet flavor in the finish. not something i plan on buying again. i'd drink it again if someone had it. it's 8.5% also..another high ABV lager from AB.

Yes it does suck. Greg Nash(now former BM of Garrison) was even going to train me over the entire summer to teach me the complete brewing process of their beers.

Shit hit the fan because he didn't get along with the owner. Greg voiced his opinions about sanitation/other practices to Garrison shareholders and was subsequently fired soon after.

I apparently still have a job there though. It's a shame because Greg really turned that brewery around ten fold, as well as giving Garrison numerous awards and the Canadian Brewing Awards, including 2007 Beer of the Year with the Imperial Pale Ale. But if you can't get along with your boss..you can't get along with your boss.

Piraat was good, but I had expected much more of it. Same with the Gulden Draak which was also in the sixpack sampler from the brewery. Too much hype from BeerAdvocate methinks.

It's the milestone of the Belgian Witbier. There are better, but it is very tasty stuff as well. Spiced with coriander and orange zest. Definitely try it.

I've noticed that it really depends on the batch of Hoegaarden. Sometimes, the beer will be outstanding.....other times, not worth the money. However, it's worth a gamble because the good batches are fuckin phenomenal.

Since Hoegaarden are brewed under InBev now, I assume the different batches aren't what is making the beer taste different..simply due to quality control and consistency of a big brewer. It's probably more so the beer has been on the shelf too long, or if on tap, dirty tap lines.

icehouse or steel reserve perhaps?

yea hoegaarden is some good stuff. it seems to be a very "accessible" beer. i mean..people that normally drink stuff like bud or miller often like hoegaarden. that's not to say it's not a bad beer at all..just that it doesn't seem to turn people off like an imperial stout or something.

didn't have any beer today. didn't realize i drank the last sunshine wheat. hopefully we'll hit up the store tomorrow..otherwise, i might while we're in iowa. iowa has some of those 5% laws...regardless, it seems they still manage a decent selection according to one of my beer books. we're heading over there this friday for a couple nights to see some friends of the family.

Never had those... I've only tried Colt 45, Bullmax and Olde English. Bullmax isn't as bad as the other two. But I'm almost 21 now and I have money. We only drank that shit when we were like 14 to 16 cause we had no money Won't be drinking the cheap 40 ounces anymore... or "nigger beer" as my friend Liam would call it

If you're going to drink cheap malt liquor, you might as well get Mickey's. It's actually got a decent flavor to it, compared to all those other cheap shits like steel reserve and shit

yea. mickey's is a good one. my poison was typically OE800. in florida they don't sell 40s though..almost tempted to buy one here just to honor the past. would have to pour out some for my homiez. the only problem with that is, after having so many good beers..it's almost like punishing myself if i were to go back to some of that swill.

Haha, I'll never go back to that crap... not even for old times sake. If I wanted to drink alcoholic urine I'd just piss in a glass half way, fill the other half with club soda, and add a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol That's pretty much what the cheap shit tastes like.

tried some new beers over the weekend since my parents and i went up to iowa to visit long time friends of the family. the new ones i had were leinenkugel's summer shandy and honey weiss (i think i've had the HW before though), goose island honker's ale (amber ale), and point st. benedict's winter ale.

the summer shandy was weird..it's a wheat beer mixed with lemon or lemonade. was drinkable and not overly sweet..just not my cup of tea i guess. the honey weiss was ok..nothing special..very drinkable but nothing to write home about. the st. benedicts winter ale was fairly tasty. medium bodied..malty and somewhat sweet. the honker's ale was my favorite..and also one of the few i had on tap rather than out of the bottle. it's a very balanced beer. good, clean flavor. nothing really experimental by any means..just a solid amber ale. great session beer i'd say.

Went out and bought a big bottle of Sasquatch Stout this weekend. I've seen it on the shelves at the BC Liquor store for years so I decided to try it. It's a very nice stout, not the best I've ever had, but still pretty fucking good. If anyone else on here enjoys stout and lives in Canada, it's worth trying. I doubt you could purchase it in the USA though, it's made in Chilliwack, BC.

Right on man. Props for buying local beer. Sadly, we don't get any BC micros on this side of the coast. I think Propeller ESB(Extra Special Bitter) is available in BC though. If so, check it out.

Ah that sucks, it's totally worth trying, but who knows, it might make its way across Canada someday. I'll keep my eyes open for the Propeller the next time I'm at the liquor store

if you found one Goose Island beer, look for their bourbon stout.

i went to a barleywine tasting over the weekend and had a lot of good stuff. The highlight was Lost Abbey/Port Brewing "The Angel's Share", brandy barrel aged. One of the rarest and most memorable beers i've ever had. We also had 2006, 2007, and 2008 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot available, and a Left Hand barleywine aged since 2004. probably 13 beers altogether. i'm about to open some Old Ruffian, which is still my favorite.

haven't seen that one on sale yet. so far i've had their IPA and honker's ale. i know there is one other style on sale here, i just forget what it is. i know it's not bourbon stout because i'd definitely remember that/would've already tried it!

what's the left hand barleywine called? it isn't my favorite style of beer i must say..kinda warming up to it slowly though. my favorite style is still a toss up..IPA vs. stout vs. porter. even though stout and porter are so similar..

left hand's barleywine is Widdershins. I had to look it up. The current reviews on BA say it has a lot of yeast and stuff, well you can bet the stuff from 2004 had tons of floaters. still a decent beer, not spoiled or anything. I bet any good barleywine would last 10 years or more in the right conditions.

I'm not sure if I liked the aged barleywine better than fresh stuff though. You lose some of the genocidal hops bite and alcohol burn over time, but this Old Ruffian for instance is pretty balanced to begin with after it warms up a little from cellar temperature. Most people think 2008 Bigfoot is too hoppy, but I enjoyed the one I had a couple weeks ago.

i guess I really can't tell much about a new beer from a 2 oz taste, unless it happens to be remarkable like Angel's Share or really terrible like Phucket lager

thanks trans. i've been around a little...just half lurking i guess. haven't had much going on here in the ways of beer either since my access to beer has been severely shut down thanks to moving to mexico, mo.

yea, barleywine style ales are a real love/hate kinda thing for the most part. i'm slowly coming around, but really disliked them for a long time. give some a try..they vary a bit. try some bigfoot (sierra nevada) or old ruffian (great divide)..those are two very popular examples...only problem is that i think bigfoot is a seasonal release, and that season just ended.

mathias..i'm not sure that it can be done either. i wonder if it can if you keep adding yeast and sugar during the fermentation process??

bass, ask your coworkers!

i'm sure the stuff was strong bob, but how exactly did you arrive at that ABV? what i mean by that is how did you measure it?

I've really been getting into stout lately. I fucking LOVE it Anyways, I'm pretty much wanting to try as many as I can find. Are either of these any good?

I've had St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout many times in bottle and on-tap. Excellent beer for it's style. Definitely check it out.

I would, but they don't sell many stouts in the BC Liquor store here. Just Young's, Guinness, Sasquatch, and the two I posted above. Young's and Sasquatch make Guinness taste like diarrhea.

Youngs rules... if you can get their oatmeal and double chocolate stouts, you can be happy.

and yeast can't survive in high alcohol concentrations. brewers have to use special yeasts to make Sam Adams Utopias and strong beers like that. Wine and malt beverages can't really get beyond 25% because all the yeast dies. anything stronger than that is distilled. distilling pure ethanol from sugar and drinking it sounds like a bad idea to me, but knock yourself out.
