nice assortment of beers there. what's the pannepot old fisherman's ale like? going by name alone..it seems like an unlikely bedfellow with the rest of the bunch. tripel karmeliet would be a good one to add to that roster.
still want to try that westvleteren! i'll probably end up ordering some once i start getting paid and have a place of residence that will last longer than a few months.
went to wal mart with my mom today. it was one of those super wal marts with the food and whatnot. i went to mainly get some clothes for the colder weather here. naturally, i couldn't resist checking out their beer selection and was pleasantly surprised. nothing earth shattering, but not what i expected. they had a few beers from new belgium brewing co. which were fat tire, (i think this is the right name >)sunshine wheat, and another one that was a lager or pilsner i forgot the name of. also they had a relatively local brewery..boulevard brewing co from kansas city, MO. from that brewery, they had a dry stout, porter, unfiltered wheat, and a pale ale. brought that to my moms attention and she bought a 6 pack of the pale ale.
the cool thing about their 6er's is that they come in a solid cardboard box just like the 12 packs so no light can hit the (brown) bottles. ..i'll have to look at the map, but if their brewery isn't very far off from here, i might try and take a tour one of these days.

When I drink I always end up with Smirnoff Vodka and I don't know why. It's just what all of my friends drink, but I don't even like it much. I like whiskey, mainly Jack Daniels though I can never afford it so I end up with nasty cheap shit, and beer wise I really like Guinness but usually never have it because nowhere here carries it. I almost always end up drinking a lot of Natural Ice, which I don't even really like...or Coors...eh.

drink guinness from the tap or don't drink it at all... actually, still don't drink it if there's anything actually good in the bar.

If they have both the Extra Cold and the regular Guinness, go for the regular- the extra cold doesn't taste quite as good because it's so chilled.
Guinness is probably my number 1 drink, pure liquid heaven

Tiny ass town in Tennessee. Sometimes the package store has it, but most of the time there's none.

Morristown, in east Tennessee. There's a decent sized package store on the east end of town which has it sometimes but the tiny ass one where I live never has anything.

i like both of them and will drink either without hesitation..well unless i'm about to go drive somewhere or do something important. still..they are fairly cheap. as far as whiskey that companies deem worth enough to not be bottled in plastic goes..they are almost at the bottom.
can't wait till i've got my own place again and am able to drink plenty without hearing shit about it from anyone.

I dunno, once I find something I like I stick with it. What's some good whiskey that's relatively easy to find?

WhiskEy sucks. Whisky is where it's at.
Especially single-malts. A, relatively, easy one to find is a Dalwhinnie or an Oban. And ofcourse everyone knows Glenfiddich, it's available in most bars over here but I have no idea what's it's like in the USA. With your whiskEy
I'm a single-malt freak, no blends in my house..
Well, actually I have some JD's to throw in the cola. But if you do that with a single-malt and a Scotsman finds out about it, he will punch your lights out. Plus it's a waste of money.

stouts is manly except for Guinness, which is borderline. I consider it Fizzy Yellow Beer, just like I consider Will Smith a white actor.
Morristown is where they shot Evil Dead.. that's awesome. Other than that, in Tennessee you need to go to Nashville to buy good beer. Or Kentucky where I am going Tuesday, where there is no sales tax on beer and a greater selection from the Great Lakes region, northeast, and midwest.

Yeah, that's about all we're famous for either haha. A little bit of the cabin is still there, like a piece of a brick wall.

I had a few Garrison Imperial Ale's at a local pub/sports bar the other day. I asked the blond waitress for a "Garrison IPA" and she replied with a blank expression and a "Uhhh, we don't have that"...I look to the beer menu to reaffirm the situation and see the beer I want labeled as "Garrison Imperial Ale".
Anyways, it was damn good on tap! Seemed even better than from the growler. I haven't has it as recently since the other day, but the brewmaster did indeed add even more Magnum hops and dry-hopping with Cascade. 70 ibu's of bliss and powerful session beer.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1879/38101
Still haven't had my review up, but I'd reckon it would be well over 4/5.
Also went to a local private liquor store with my friend and saw that they had Rogue Dead Guy Ale glasses on display behind the counter. I questioned the man at the desk if they were for sale. He said it was a promotional thing and that they were giving one away for every three Rogue bomber you bought. Now, a Rogue bomber there is $7.99 tax incl. a piece. My friend and I were considering the 'deal', when a woman from the store came up behind them and offered us a glass if we bought only one bomber, or two glasses for two bombers. Ha! Needless to say we accepted her deal! The guy just kinda slowly walked to the side.
Picked up the Dead Guy Ale which I hadn't had in almost a year exactly and their Dry Hopped St. Rogue Red, which I hadn't had before. The Dead Guy Ale was excellent of course and I was also fond of the Red Ale.
Went to Propeller afterwards and they still hadn't released their RIS..they said the end of this week it would be out..

porters are great. generally heavy bodied ales with rich roasted malt flavors that sometimes also bring out hints of coffee, chocolate, caramel, or toffee. stouts and porters are very similar and used to be considered the same thing. eventually they started calling the heaviest and darkest porters, stout porters. then even later, the two sort of split into what we have today.
i love both styles and will drink them any day of the week. they are great after a meal, with a meal, or before a meal. imperial stouts are the real heavy weights...there are some imperial porters, just not as common. imperial when used with beer basically just means double. higher in alcohol with a heavier body. if you don't like heavy beers, they probably aren't the styles for you, but definitely give them a try.
a lot of people think guinness is a heavy bodied beer.. i tend to disagree. there are MANY stouts and porters that will make guinness feel pretty watery.

don't like heavier or dark beers? go with some of the brutal bitter, st. rogue's red, half e weizen, kell's irish lager, hazelnut brown nectar, or even the santa's private reserve..that stuff was pretty damn tasty.

you didn't spell it wrong, just differently than some countries spell it..well most countries i guess ha. irish and many (not all) us companies spell it with an e. tullamore dew, bushmills, and maker's mark are good and very easy to find.
and to all haters of whiskEy with an e..i'd like to refer you to this: http://www.buy.com/prod/whiskey/q/loc/106/39973886.html

Try to find an Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. They are relatively easy to find here in Austin. In fact, this one liquor store was selling 4 packs for $5 and change. Needless to say, I frequented the store.

nice! i wish i could still buy beers like that. there are some microbreweries from this state that have some beer around here, as well as one or two non local breweries..so at least there is something.
what's the open bottle between the ruination and the horn dog?

Lost Abbey Judgement Day... it's an awesome bottle, rare beer, i will take some better pics later. I actually snapped that one in complete darkness, so I didn't know how it would turn out.

LOL. Drink ANYTHING on mushrooms for a fuller effect I bet the effects under the influence of some good paper hits would be even more profound

how's that westvleteren 12? i really want to try that stuff. have you had st. bernardus abt 12? if so..how do they compare? i've heard they are pretty similar, and i've also heard the westvleteren "blows it out of the water."

I sampled them both when i was drunk already... they're fuckin good belgian quadrupels. beyond that I think you're splitting hairs somewhat. westy may be the best beer in the world to many people and also pretty rare, but most of the great belgians are comparable IMO. Next beer run I may get some chimays, st. bernardus (which is in my beer bottle collection on the right side, if you look closely. plus the brick store pub in decatur, GA has it on draft), delirium, corsendonk, rochefort, etc. Maybe some other time i will get to sit down with a full westy 12 to myself.
Tonight i had cask-conditioned dry-hopped Rogue I2PA. It was crazy, crazy hoppy beer. There's hops in the cask, apparently. I think I prefer the drafts of 90 minute IPA I've been drinking because there's some balanced flavor besides pure hop vine in there.

this weekend, we're most likely going to a brewpub that i may have mentioned before. my mom hurt her back so we didn't go last weekend. this is a list of beers they have available throughout the year: http://www.flatbranch.com/beers.asp the ones with the tap handle are the ones currently on tap. looking forward to trying the imperial stout, oatmeal stout, maybe the IPA (says it's more like the british style than the american), and maybe even the barleywine style ale and the green chili beer. luckily they offer small samples..and i might even go for a growler of whatever winds up being my favorite.

might hit up two brewpubs this week. we're going to the st. louis zoo tomorrow morning and on the way back are planning to stop at the trailhead brewing co. in st. charles, mo. http://www.trailheadbrewing.com/brewery.asp those are their beers.. unfortunately, after reading several reviews on BA, i don't expect to fall in love with their beer. a local that posted a review described them as making beer to bring macro swill lovers to the path of good craft beer. nobody said it was bad..just "flavorless", "all similar tasting", and someone mentioned none of them are very hoppy. oh well..still looking forward to trying their stout and maybe the seasonal.

hey-
ive had a duvel in the fridge since xmas time. a week or two ago i noticed the beer area was sticky. then yesterday i went to have the beer and the bottle itself was sticky. the duvel didnt taste quite right either.. the bottle was stained in a way that made it look like the beer somehow spoiled and leaked out the top? i know duvel is bottle conditioned...but is that a possibility? i didnt even finish it

^I'm glad you mentioned that. I have, as well, had unfortunate experiences with expensive beer.....mostly Hoegaarden. It wasn't 'sticky'.....but the flavor just wasn't right. The beer was almost painful to drink adn I had a hard time finishing them.....but god dammit, I did finish 'em. Could it be that they were old?

trans - i've never had that happen before. sounds to me like maybe when they capped the bottle, it didn't get sealed up completely and eventually the slow leak turned into a little bit leaking out? no idea really.. did it look like a full bottle? that could account of it not tasting right...imagine opening a bottle and letting it sit in the fridge for a few weeks. how as the carbonation?
mb - maybe you just bought some that was old, or not stored properly at some point? there have been places that i avoid buying beer from because it seemed like some of the beer i bought was skunked.
only weird experiences i've had with good (and bottle conditioned) beers were when i bought 2 different types of unibroue from the same store..both tasted old and bad. the other i posted about before.. it was my fault. i took a corner too fast and my beer slammed into the passenger door. guess there was a tiny crack or something in a bottle of gulden draak. about a minute later, the bottle exploded! my car smelled great for about a day..then got worse and worse until i bought febreeze and ozium.
the other day we went to st. louis to the zoo and a brewery. instead of going to the one that i read a bunch of mediocre reviews for..we went to the schlafly brewery which was very close to the zoo. it was great! had their dry hopped APA (american pale ale) and a pint of oatmeal stout. my mom had the pilsner but said she liked the APA better after i let her try a sip. you can order your beer in a pint glass with their logo on it for a few bucks extra, and you can keep the glass. you save a little bit over just going to the gift shop and buying one...so my mom hooked it up with that.
the food was awesome.. had a big ass pulled pork sandwich and some potato salad. the sauce on the sandwich was some chipotle pale ale sauce. couldn't really taste the beer though.

that sucks...i really don't like that beer.
trans - that's weird man..maybe someone spilt something on the bottle? wouldn't explain the bad taste..
tonight i had some boulevard bully! porter. it's a missouri beer.. pretty good actually. bottle conditioned porter. not as heavy in the body department as i like for a porter..but it was still delicious. great roasted malt flavor with a bit of coffee in there as well. very thick head. glad there are still 5 more in the fridge. looking forward to trying their dry stout next.

i decided to go on a beer run this afternoon... it was like 4 pm and i thought hell, i can get to atlanta and back in 6 hours and catch the movie Cloverfield with my friends at 11:50 no problem. it was a success... most of my shit is out in the car still, but I got a great haul. Lots of belgian types (st bernardus, duvel, allagash, marsedous, chimay), some sweetwater happy endings liter bottles, storm king, yeti + oak aged yeti, 90 minute ipa, gonzo imperial porter, a 12 pack of Old Chub cans, Rochefort 8 and 10s... I dont even remember half of it. there may be pics soon.
edit: oh hey, opening a quadrupel immediately after a bumpy road trip is a fuckin bad idea unless you want to mop half your expensive beer up.

Had about 8 shots of home made cranberry vodka stuff and about 8 bottles of Labatts last night. Drunk. It made Smackdown! that much more entertaining.

Bah. Video games are good after you've smoked a joint. When I'm drunk, I'd rather watch a show or a movie

i got Allagash Black belgian style stout, and Allagash FOUR quadrupel. "A one-of-a-kind ale crafted from four malts, four varieties of hops, four natural sugars, and fermented four times with four different yeast strains."
I'm looking over the haul... sam adams imperial hallertau pilsener is one I forgot about. Glad I could find some. Also some Young's Double Chocolate Stouts, Highland Oatmeal Porter and Tasgall Ale, and Atlanta Brewing Co. double chocolate oatmeal porter. along with the stuff i mentioned in passing earlier.
i bought so much beer at both locations of Green's Beverages (greensbeverages.com) that customers started asking me questions like I was an employee stocking the shelves... they didn't ask "do you work here?" they just went straight to "hey do you guys have pint bottles of Newcastle? do you have this in 12 packs or just 6?"
here's tonights beer pics now that I have a decent camera

I discovered this awesome little beer shop with hundreds of different kinds of beer (http://www.bertsbierhuis.nl/webpagina's/inhoudsopgave.htm). So for starters i go me a nice bottle of Wychwood Hobgoblin and Morland Old Speckled Hen.
gonna try em tonight, im very very very curious. just one question, you should drink these cooled right?

yea, you can buy that stuff in florida. my old roommate from buffalo, ny swears it's not as good as it is up there. he thinks its old and skunky or something. though he was against trying new beers for a while..even though we'd go to that total wine and more store. he'd just go grab warsteiner which you can buy at our local grocery store. finally got him to try some other stuff because i accidentally left some of my beers in his fridge last time i was in that area.

Yeah, good stuff! I have a few cellared that are a bit over three years old now.
I've been drinking a lot of Propeller RIS, Garrison IPA and today a local Microbrew's porter, all on tap. Huge surprise to see the Propeller RIS on tap at a Dartmouth pub!

The only Labatts they sell here is the 5% stuff in 12 ounce bottles or cans. My dad made the vodka stuff I was drinking. And yes, I've made my own beer with a beer kit in a 5 gallon bucket before, and it was decent. There's another dude I know that makes the stuff regularly, and it comes out reeally good.

Yeah, even Miller Lite is good, it just takes 4 or 5 to get me buzzing.

rolling rock and bud? I said american BEER. like Anchor

"intense hop experience"... i can't argue with that. and I've had Rogue Imperial IPA cask conditioned with a pile of hops soaking in the barrel.
if you like beer fucking hop-stile, try to grab this before it's gone. I wish I had more than a 4 pack. Not necessarily for myself, but it's worth a lot in beer trades and it's bound to be getting rare.

i wasn't crazy about that sam adams..and i LOVE hoppy beer. it just wasn't balanced well. as garrett oliver said, in regards to "the hoppiest beer," "It’s a fairly idiotic pursuit, like a chef saying, ‘This is the saltiest dish.’ Anyone can toss hops in a pot, but can you make it beautiful"
the beer tasted alright..i'd just rather have something else like hercules DIPA, dogfish head 60/90/120, steelhead DIPA, etc.
hopefully we'll be hitting up another brewery here in missouri today. leaving in a few minutes to see some relatives then maybe stop in for a beer or two.

ouch. can't say i've had that experience MTM..then again, i've never drank a 6 pack of that shit! went to another local brewery today for a little bit. first we met some relatives at a place for food..there i had a schlafly (from st. louis, mo) pale ale. it's more of a british style pale ale..ie a little more balanced/not as hoppy. it was ok..i should've asked for a glass though. only beers i drink out of the bottle these days are bud/miller/etc.
after that we went to the tin mill brewing co. in hermann, mo. they either exclusively make lagers, or they might have some seasonal ale. at the time, all they had were lagers. unfiltered hefe weizen, pilsner, doppelbock, maibock, and a pumpkin lager. tried a sample of each then had a 16 oz. doppelbock.
all were good, though i would say it was my least favorite of the 3 MO breweries i've been to so far. they had a self guided tour of their brewery too..was cool to walk through and see all the tanks and have a bit of a description to follow along.
the doppelbock was a bit unbalanced..still good though. smelled and tasted like roasted malt. had a grainy flavor to it as well. after a sip or two i could pick up on the hops in there.
the pumpkin lager was fairly similar in flavor as the maibock only with more fall spices in the flavor. the pumpkin definitely wasn't up front at all. could taste the spices more than the pumpkin for sure...in fact, not sure i tasted pumpkin. ha.
the unfiltered wheat was fairly standard. tasted good, smelled good, nice color..nothing outstanding or groundbreaking in the flavor though. would gladly drink it over all of the regular crap-on-tap you can find anywhere.
the pilsner was nice, crisp, with subtle flavors. not very bold. light malt flavor that finished out with a light hop taste. not too dry, but a little.
the maibock was one of my favorites. almost got that but got tricked by the also confused bartender. she just started working there.. they had 6 taps and 5 beers came with the sampler. so i was going to find out what the last beer was..turns out there was nothing on that one yet.

i won a fuckin beer raffle today... a bomber of Great Lakes Blackout Stout, but it's the barrel-aged version. Apparently not sold anywhere but the brewery and it's a very limited release when it's around, like 300-500 bottles. $2 well spent.
I didn't realize it before but my Sweetwater Happy Endings imperial stouts are hand numbered bottles from a series of only 3000.
and also i drank a lot of great beer... westmalle tripel, dfh 120 minute, rochefort 10, arrogant bastard ale, sam adams chocolate bock, great lakes edmund fitzgerald porter, some homebrews, and some stuff i will never remember i guess.

There honey brown lager is much better...well, for Sleeman anyways.
