Yeah, I'm not so much a fan of generic glassware. I love brewery glasses though. Speaking of which..I need more.

I really need to get more snifters, but I'm not keen on buying one for $10 each. I bought a tin and pewter 'German styled' beer stein not too long ago from my work, the Salvation Army. I think I have a picture of it somewhere..I feel like a knob drinking out of it though. Too much of a novelty rather than practicality.

yea, it was pretty good..not one of my favorites from them though. still have to give that to either the imperial stout, taddy porter, or oatmeal stout. all their beers are good shit though.

my favorite glasses are my generic nonic pints and Free The Hops tulip glass.

speaking of Free the Hops... a meeting means lots of free good beer. I don't remember all the ones I tried tonight. A couple of leftover Octoberfests (Harpoon and Left Hand), some good stouts and porters (Great Divide Yeti and Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter), and some IPAs and stuff... someone brought Phucket lager as a joke and it was phuckin terrible skunked macro import fizzy yellow beer. My favorite was Goose Island Brewing Co's bourbon barrel stout.

I've had their Oatmeal Stout which is very good, too. Haven't even seen their Imperial or Taddy though.

Indeed. Their oatmeal stout is my favourite, followed by their Impy stout and Nut brown.

nut brown wasn't my favorite..too nutty. gotta say i haven't had it in a while, just can't recall having any other beer with that much obvious nut flavor.

last night i had a glass of rogue santa's special reserve. it was a nice beer..surprisingly hoppy. very drinkable, and would love some more.

edit..having a pretty damn good beer right now. clipper city heavy seas winter ale ("category 5" ale). they really need to shorten their titles.. anyway, they call it an imperial ESB. at first it smells like an IPA do to very present hops (citrusy), but the more i smell it, i can also detect a sweet malty backbone to it. decent head that dissipated somewhat quickly, on the lighter end of heavier bodied, or heavier end of medium bodied. fairly dark compared to other ESBs i've had. looks dark amber or even ruby in color.

if it weren't for the sweet malt (caramel) that i can taste, you could probably have told me it was a double IPA..pretty similar really. dry finish due to the hops. 7.5% ABV feels pretty tame amongst the flavors in this one. the carbonation seems to kick in a little towards the finish, but the bitter dry finish squashes it. minimal lacing

another good beer from clipper city. if you find any of the heavy seas series, give them a shot. they're all bottle conditioned though, just to give you a heads up.

December 5 is Repeal Day, the date Prohibition ended in the United States. I hope my american friends out there got drunk today... as for the canadians, well, you get drunk every day regardless.

also a big shout out to my benefactors for the day; the community of Lynchburg, Tennessee and Mr. Jack Daniel(along with the coca cola corporation because im a fuckin pansy), and the monks at Scourmont Abbey (sorry I am getting laid more than you guys but at least you have beer).

Cheers to no prohibition. Fuck that period of sober insanity.

I had two 20oz pints of Garrison Stout last night at a pub called Celtic Corner. Bought my friend two as well, and hell..EVEN FEARFROST CAME WITH US.

Anyways, the bartender sucked. He was trying to add up the price of two drinks and was looking at me and asking me to try and figure it out. I gave him a answer that was lower than the cost just to be a dick. I'm there to drink and discuss with friends, not to figure out fucking math equations when incompetent bartenders can't do so.

I tipped him $2 for the first two beer, and a dollar, if that, for the next batch. Cunt.

The beers were really good though.

Ahh! I'm stoked. Two more beers brewed locally are hitting the shelves.

Propeller Pilsener and Garrison Black Lager. I don't know much about the Pilsener, but the brewmaster for Garrison posted on BeerAdvocate the lager being an "Imperial Rauch Schwarzbier" at 8.3%. Limited supply of 2000 bottles and in 500ml, which are black wax dipped.

FUCK YEAH.

i'd like to get into homebrewing and do some rauchbier... hickory smoked, southern style rauchbier. It would be big, trust me.

we're supposed to get a keg of Rogue Shakespeare Stout, a first for Alabama, soon. And also Rogue beer casks. I love Rogue...

tonight i'm drinking Great Divide Old Ruffian Barleywine, which is great. Watching The Thirsty Traveler go to Germany's Oktoberfest makes me want to have a giant mug of Arrogant Bastard, which I'll get to later.

edit: i wish I had a digital camera for this mug full of AB, it's a beautiful sight.

trans - i think the three philosophers is only 3% cherry lambic..i know it's under 10% somewhere. it's alright stuff, i prefer the hennepin or the others to be honest.

bass - that's cool, sounds like some good sheit. always good seeing more beer available.

mathias - have you ever had great divide hibernation ale? saw a 6 pack at the store today but decided i'd try it at some other time since there were some things i've wanted to try that i bought instead.

truth - bud does suck and there are a LOT of great beers out there. the thing is, being used to a pale, light bodied lager like that..you probably don't want to dive into the deep end with shit like barleywine style ales or belgian ales. start off with some dark lagers, pale ales, good pilsners..and you should be on your way.

i started off the same way as a lot of people that get into all the great beer out there. started drinking shit like bud, bud light, high life, etc. eventually got a tasted for european macro lagers like heineken and st pauli girl..then guinness, which really set the stage for more beer i think. after that i was looking for more stouts which there really aren't any that are widely available. so i went to the only store i knew of in the area that had lots of beer i had never heard of before, asked the guys to help me out. after that, i was trying everything i could.

fuck yea! i passed my PRT today, did a hell of a lot better than i did last time. anyway, to celebrate, i'm gonna have a celebration ale 2007 from sierra nevada with my lunch..which is just as good as last year.

i also went out and bought some beer. got a 750 of st bernardus' winter/xmas offering http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/259/39286 . might save that till i'm with my family and share that with my brother and parents. got a bottle of dogfish head festina peche (not expecting to love this one..it was the only dfh beer i haven't had that they sell here, save one that was 10.99 a 12 oz.) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/64/35720 , penn brewery st. nikolaus bock http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/125/2272 , klaster dark beer http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2062/5346 , mendocino imperial IPA http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2516/39612 , widmer hefeweizen http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/8/17 , and a bottle of black sheep ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1417/4904 . also bought this four pack of scottish ales. i've been wanting to try this alba scots pine ale for a while. before they used hops in beer, they used pine to get that flavor, so i thought it would be interesting to try a pine ale. it's brewed with malt, pine, and spruce. well yeast too.. i'll post about those as i drink them i guess.

bass, i know you tried the black sheep ale..i read about it in this michael jackson book i got (great beer guide: 500 classic brews) and learned the story behind it. the company and ale were brewed by paul theakston of theakston's brewery. he sold the family brewery which pissed off his family, so he essential became the black sheep of the theakstons.

I haven't had Hibernation. Only the Yeti and the barleywine, which are both incredible. I could taste some similarities, maybe they use some of the same grains, but obviously Old Ruffian is more hop-forward and the Yeti is dark chocolate. I sampled some of their other stuff, some double IPA I think. Great Divide is gonna wind up being one of my favorites.

i'm hung over like a fiend too... i went to the jack daniel's after those bombers and got carried away for no good reason. Slept for 2 hours, had some sausage for breakfast and went to school for about 6 hours, i haven't felt so near death in a long time. I'm drinking a sam adams boston lager trying to mend my relationship with alcohol, that abusive whore.

haha yea, i'm a bit hung over myself. in a good way though. i love this semi-delirious feeling of being slightly still drunk the next morning. just feel all spaced out and sorta tired. light headache..not too bad really. mainly cause i didn't drink any of the water in the glass by my bed..just crashed.

great divide fucking rules, try all their beers. even that raspberry ale wasn't bad. they're one of my favorite american breweries. you're thinking of the hercules double IPA..good shit! even their regular titan IPA is delicious. i guess i'm just gonna go ahead and buy a 6er of the hibernation ale. they have a 4 pack of kwak and a glass with the stand..just wasn't too thrilled with kwak when i tried it. i like the glass..even if it has trouble standing on its own legs. still haven't gotten the corsendonk xmas ale.

actually I believe i was thinking of Highland Brewing's double IPA.. for some reason I get them mixed up. I guess because Great Divide has mountains on the bottle and Highlands.. whatever. Highland is harder to find, but also worth trying.

Wine is a terrible alcohol to get drunk with... nausea, headache, brutal hangover. Even cheap beer is better than wine

I started hating wine after about the 4th time getting drunk off of it. Now I seriously have a morbid fear of it. Tastes worse than beer to me.

Fuck that, wine is awesome. Definitely one of my favorite things to drink and the buzz is really enjoyable. I feel very alive on wine.

Now, cheap or sweet wine can be quite the bitch.

I can't stand getting drunk and smoking herb. I really fucking hate it and it seems like a waste of either drug.

I absolutely love red wine. Cabernets and Merlots particularly. Plus a wine drunk is just more fun than any other kind of alcohol.

Requiem, definitely a good combo there. They accentuate each other quite nicely.

A good Red wine is enjoyable, as is a nicely chilled White Haven't had any in a while, but i'm sure over the festive season that'll be sorted out.

i don't know much about wine at all. i've had some i thought were good..still would have to say none of them really satisfy me like beer.

had some of the hibernation ale from great divide..it's good stuff. my cousin said it tastes like chocolate. it does have a little hint of it in the flavor. to me it was pretty well balanced. a bit on the malty side with a nice dose of hops.. the alcohol is masked well by the flavor. i think it's 8% ABV.

right now i'm having some alba scots pine ale. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/80/243 no hops in this stuff, instead they used pine sprigs and spruce shoots. don't like it as much as i'd have thought. it's still pretty good though, i'm just not used to the flavors of these unusual ingredients.

I had this year's SN Celebration Ale, it tasted basically like every other hoppy Sierra Nevada except with more (cascade) hops. It was good, but as long as i can still get regular SNPA I won't really miss it being illegal here.

I should probably try some upper-class wine before I judge. I do like the feeling of being high and drunk, though. You can reach a really content state, not like the feeling of euphoria or bliss, but you're quite happy and carefree.

For me, it makes me very disorientated.

You don't have to try expensive wine to expose yourself to good wine.

tonight: tapping of Rogue Santa's Private Reserve cask, maybe the first cask-conditioned ale served at a bar in Alabama for a long time. It will be a party I'm sure.

+1, there are a lot of good wine for good prices. You just have to choose what you like in alcool, sweet, dry, spicy ect..

I've been drinking a lot of Garrison 'Black Lager' lately...the 8.3% bomb which is almost Baltic Porter like in style. I went to Propeller and bought a sixer of their new Pils, which is fairly decent for the style I figure. Also picked up some McAuslan Scotch Ale and St. Ambroise 2007 Vintage Ale at my local NSLC(finally!). Both are fucking excellent. Definitely going to be cellering a few of both.

I need to have a sober week and quit getting hangovers... but they keep tapping new cask ales here. I may go to a Christmas beer party tonight because I know there's going to be some ridiculous rare beer from the west coast.

some chick almost picked me up tonight at the bar... until i realized she was way too fuckin drunk for the drinks she had. Anyone who wants my phone number is pretty wasted anyway, but she was on Xanax too apparently. 0 to 60 in 4 drinks.

she told me she had a boyfriend, and a fiance, and a husband, and a kid, and that she lived 3 blocks away, 1.5 blocks away, and 8 blocks away. So i figured with that many people to take care of and 3 houses she wouldnt have any time for me. They finally got her a taxi, I think, but she really wanted to drive home.

went out to the dunedin brewery last night with a couple people. was pretty nice. started off with their nitro stout (dry irish style), then had their christmas beer which was quite different..almost made me think of a lambic but not quite. it's a belgian-style ale brewed with fruit (cherries i think). after that, got a glass of avery's the czar imperial stout..have had it before, just never on tap. then it was on to some rogue glen (pretty hoppy, IPA like beer) finally, i had their IPA which was very tasty. it's a shame they aren't bottling beer anymore. the guy said their bottles weren't moving on the shelves fast enough to counter rising glass and ingredients price. they are trying to figure it all out and get some smaller 12oz. bottles on the shelves again in about 2 months.

they had live music playing..mostly folk music though. it got really crowded in there for a while, i guess because it was open mic night for anyone that wanted to do their thing. they even had a drumset with a dunedin brewery skin on the bass drum. another thing about them..you can get samples of their beers in little plastic shot glasses, and you can also buy half pints for less money.

i'm looking forward to xmas though..i've got some st. bernardus christmas ale that i'm saving to drink with my brother and whoever else is interested in having a little..maybe i should buy two bottles.

mickey's is alright for cheap beer. doesn't hold a candle to good beer though.

LoS - try making your own. i've only done it so far with sierra nevada pale ale and their stout. would work using their porter in place of the stout as well.

a really common one is guinness and bass. really any lighter/pale ales and darker beer like stout and porter should work fine. only problems i could see is if they are very unique beers for their styles..ie. random weird ingredients. you'd risk the chances of having some of the flavors not go together well.

Any of you guys big on drinking games? Other than the obvious beer pong, that is. We've been big on card games lately, like Fuck You Pyramid, Asshole, Circle of Death, Fuck The Dealer, and a few others that i can't think of right now.

Beer pong to my knowledge is completely nonexistent in at least Eastern Canada. Other drinking games aren't very big as well. Usually it's "Hey, let's use the beer bong for several beers!" or "Hey, let's take some shots of 18 years aged scotch!".

all my mates love drinking games, i know a lot of people who are always slipping some in somewhere in the night. i don't like them though to be honest. i find it a waste of time.

oh and red stripe is indeed Jamaican. i think it's pretty average though. tastes a bit watery to me.

Same. I've only played a handful of drinking games and they can involve way too much concentration if you are sloshed.

just got back from my grandmas house up in the outskirts of detroit for a few days. got to hang out with the bulk of my dad's side of the family which i haven't seen in years. being in a region i haven't been in since i got more into beer..i was pleased to find a bunch of beers i've heard of but never was able to try for myself. two of my uncles came over with some good shit..one brought two hearted ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1093 , which i've had and is one of my favorites of all beer. the other brought some king's IPA http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1460/8607 (michigan local beer i'm pretty sure) and some great lakes burning river http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/73/225 which was a pale ale. both of them were good...the great lakes being the better of the two.

i asked them where they got their beer..particularly cause i wanted to track down some great lakes blackout stout http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/73/15813 . no luck there..did find several bell's beers at first. between my brother and i, we grabbed a few 6 packs..bell's porter http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1287 , bell's pale ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1206 , and some magic hat #9 "not quite pale ale" http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/96/299 . all of which were also pretty damn good. a surprisingly good one that my uncle had when we brought those beers to their house for some outdoor grilling in the snow was bell's best brown ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1924 . normally i'm not crazy about brown ales..i like them, they just never catch my attention like an IPA or stout..but this stuff was very tasty.

on one of our last nights, we went to this irish pub for dinner and some beers, we lucked out and they had a decent selection on tap. i had a glass of founder's porter http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/7348 which was awesome, and some other cherry porter..can't remember the brewer. the cherry porter wasn't as good as the founder's though. the taste reminded me very much of a red wine while still tasting like a porter.

that pub had some great lakes beers on tap and our waitress confessed to considering herself a beer connoisseur after my parents said the same of my brother and i. so after we ate, i asked her where i could find some of that blackout stout and she told me about a store that we wound up going to.

damn this place ruled! ha it was kinda pricey though. regardless, they had a LOT of beer, and better yet..a lot of beer i've never seen on sale before. walked out of there with a bottle of the stone 11th anniversary ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/147/38470 (the black IPA), a bottle of bert grant's imperial stout http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/5/12 which is listed in the 500 best beers book i have, a six pack of new holland mad hatter IPA http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/335/2904 (local brewery..sadly i mistook this one for a victory brewery beer..they were kinda mixed together.), grabbed a bottle of weihenstephaner vitus (weizenbock) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/252/35625 , and for tonight (new years eve) grabbed a small bottle of johnny walker black label.

now i can't decide if i'm gonna drink the stone or the bert grant's tonight.

bert grant's imperial stout from the yakima brewing and malting co.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_4622.jpg

i basically bought this one for two reasons..one i love imperial stouts, and two because this beer is mentioned (along with several others from this brewer) in a book i have that contains 500 of michael jackson's favorite beers from across the globe. no..not the white glove on one hand MJ..the most famous and respected beer critic to ever live.

anyway.. it was very good, though not my favorite of the imperial stouts.

smells of dark chocolate and coffee with a sweetness that makes me think of toffee or caramel. also has a nice roasted malt aroma. the taste is much the same..a bit of dark chocolate but with a nice smokey flavor. there's a dry finish..and you really can't detect the alcohol. however..this is one of the lowest ABV amongst imperial stouts that i've seen or consumed.

definitely worth a try if this stuff is available to you.

stone XI anniversary ale

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_4626.jpg

ever since i had heard of this "black IPA" i've been very eager to try it. i love IPAs and also love dark beers. have to say i'm not disappointed at all.

in the nose you'll find a creamy hoppy and piney aroma along with some undertones of malt and a slight hint of the alcohol towards the end. (8.7% ABV) the piney smell became noticeably more distinct after i took my first sip.

the taste is great. on the heavy end of medium bodied beer with a fairly dry finish. plenty of flavor from the hops that comes through creamy again. distinct pine flavors with a lightly sweet malty backbone.

was sort of expensive..though i think it was probably just the particular store i got it at. if it were cheaper (and available here in MO) i'd definitely buy more of this stuff. there is even an ideal cellaring temperature printed on the bottle if you wanted to lay it down for a few years..it would probably be great after some aging..though i believe that would take a bit of the hoppyness out of it...which i would miss.

Yummy posts graf! Good to see you're still drinking the best! I didn't even have one beer last night, just 9 years aged Knob Creek Bourbon, Tequila and Champagne. Holy drunk ballz.

I bought a sixpack of McAuslan/St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat the other day.

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/194/5432

Would be a great summer beer, I only bought it because I've been meaning to try it for a long while now and because the store was sold out of St. Ambroise Oatmeal stout sixers. I only had a few that one night in particular, it's not a beer that you'd want to drink a lot of due to it's fruityness. I opted for a 500ml of Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout and Imperial Stout instead of finishing the sickpack.

Propeller RIS should be out this week or next at the latest!

yea trans, i'm glad i found some too. it's some damn good beer. i wish i'd have bought a bottle of arrogant bastard too..i just spent too much as it was, so i figured i'd put it back and spare my wallet a little. kinda kick myself about it now though as my good beer supply dwindles.

bass - that sucks you didn't have any beers at all. liquor is always good though.

saw some of the st. ambroise oatmeal stout and pale ale at that store but was overwhelmed with the choices of beer i hadn't had before and wanted to try. plus i think i remembered you saying the pale ale wasn't all that great?

Well I had no beer by choice..because I wasn't planning on getting drunk, I was planning on getting polluted. haha. M1SSION ACCOMPLISH3D.

I'll have to retry the Pale Ale. When I had it was a few years ago and I wasn't into craft beer whatsoever. I remember it being so weird because it had an apple flavour to it. The sixpack I bought was probably pretty old as well.

I wish I could be overwhelmed by beer selection.

Can't complain though because we still have access to some world class brews, and even ones made here locally. Ok, I can complain a little because you Americans have access to and produce outstanding beer. haha.

The winter up here has been pretty crazy so far, with more than a few snow storms each week. Definitely makes me want to drink some heavy stouts. Graf, eariler I was actually craving the Imperial Yeti you sent me last year.

I had some plum brandy on New Years night... it was one of the most vile and disgustingly rotten drinks I've ever downed. The smell is absolutely putrefying. If it wasn't for the bottle's label I'd totally think it was some kind of fucked-up vodka.

Yeah, that would be the perfect time of it. Not so much when it's below zero with a snowstorm outside.

trans - that magic hat not quite pale ale has apricot in it. i'm not sure if it was real fruit or just flavoring. it was pretty good though..you could tell it was there, but it was still fairly subtle. i would think you'd be able to find it up in NY since the guy at the store in MI said they only have a portion of the selection available in NY and some other areas around the north east.

i'm back to the one beer a night regiment thanks to my dwindling supply of beer. after these are gone..it's on to my dad's beers. mainly bud select, though he does have a handful of newcasltes in there. tonight i'm having a scottish ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/80/245 was one of four bottles that came in a scottish ale box.

bass - know anywhere else to find those thirsty traveler videos? i was trying to watch some with my brother but it seems that site isn't hosting them anymore. there were still a bunch i wanted to watch that i put off for later.

I'll have to get back to you on that..they aren't on torrentspy anymore? I'll check later if they are on tvtorrents.com , that's a great site. Full seasons on almost every decent television show you can think of. If you want an invite, let me know.

Flat Guinness from a can?

Maybe you are referring to the regular nitro-canned Guinness? lozlz.

I'm going into downtown Halifax tomorrow with my friend to do some casual drinking and pub dining. I'm looking forward to seeing if the local brew pub, as well as Propeller have their Imperial Stouts ready!
