this is only the second pumpkin beer i've had (first being shipyard pumpkinhead), but i wasn't too fond of the former. wasn't bad, just weird tasting pumpkin in my beer i guess. i figured i'd give it a shot though.
smell is mainly of spices..at first i was thinking it was a smell of alcohol, but i think it is more of a spicy smell with some pumpkin in there. the pumpkin doesn't really jump out in the aroma..more of a subtle smell than i expected. i think i can also detect a slight malty smell.
taste is again, lacking in pumpkin compared to what i expected. i can taste a kind of pumpkin pie flavor in the aftertaste. much better than the shipyard i'd say.
medium bodied, spicy upfront then sort of bitter until it tastes mildly like pumpkin. a decent ale, but i still am not crazy about pumpkin in my beers. i could see having some more of this at thanksgiving or some fall seasonal party or something...but other than that, i'll stick with other seasonals without pumpkin, or just regular beers i can get anytime.
|
i think i want to try this... i like seasonal beers. i think i can enjoy them more here in new york than you can in flordia, we have a wider range of weather. ill let you know how it goes if i find some

midnight - i agree on the brown ales. i do like them, and will continue trying new ones. they just never seem to stand out compared to other beers i really like.
trans - yea, pretty decent stuff. i was a bit skeptical with the pumpkin and all.. this one uses it more subtly than the last pumpkin ale i've had.. reminds me of kalamzoo stout...they use licorice (no pumpkin) in the beer, and i hate licorice. the key difference is that they use it amongst many other things and don't put it in the forefront of the taste.

I had a bomber of Propeller IPA and definitely realized how much better the Garrison IPA was..hopefully the Garrison doesn't take long to get into the government alcohol stores.

A fresh SNPA can't be beat, any time of day. I just put in a 19 hour day and came home dead tired and thirsty... I was looking forward to drinking my last SNPA the whole way home. very good to come home to. god damn it makes me happy to drink even one... if I came into some cash or even won the mega jackpot lottery, the first thing i would love to do is buy a keg of the stuff fresh from Chico, CA and drink it until the sun comes up vacationing on the west coast. Then I would go to Stone Brewing Co but that's another story.
I kinda burned the budget buying bourbon again but I need some pale ales (now i only have porters, oatmeal stouts, one dead guy ale and one sierra nevada 2007 anniversary in the fridge).. I might have to finally buy the sweetwater 420 tomorrow.

sounds like a nice list of beers though.
went to total today and got some clear rum instead of vodka..i can't believe i had forgotten about clear rum when my friend was telling me dark liquors have lots of carbs. i guess cause i always bought dark rum.
going to my brothers house this weekend, since he is getting a taste for good beer, particularly belgian ales, i figured i'd bring over some gouden carolus grand cru of the emperor. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1534/6947 when i search grand cru of the emperor, it says it goes by an alias and refers me to that page. the bottle looks identically except on the diagonal blue line, it says grand cru of the emperor in english. i've only had it once before, but it was pretty damn good. strong too, 10%..was $8.99 for a 750ml. it's from 2006.
actually BA says 11% but the bottle says 10%..i think i'll go with the bottle.
edit..any of you texans seen or tried this stuff: http://www.saintarnold.com/ someone recommended their beer, but i've never seen any on sale out this way. looks like a decent brewery.

I had the Chimay blue today. I didn't really like it very much, neither did my friend. I could tell that I was drinking a really good beer it just didn't do much for me. Later at lunch I had a casked eastern IPA from a local brewery that was much more suited for my palate.

I got new things today... Abita Pecan brown ale, Brooklyn Brown Ale, Atlanta Brewing Co. Red Brick Ale (which is also a brown ale.. I met one of the brewery reps at my gym and talked beer with him for awhile last week; I had never heard of them before but now I know to look them up as another local beer option), Harpoon IPA, Flying Dog IPA, Sweetwater 420 Pale Ale (not bad, only one I've had so far), Samuel Adams Octoberfest and Honey Porter, and a Left Hand Milk Stout.

I wanna get some DFH, soon. The punkin ale sounds cool, but more importantly I want the IPAs. Post Road Pumpkin makes its yearly appearance here within a couple of weeks, and thats probably going to be my pumpkin ale of choice. I think it's made by Brooklyn Brewery nowadays, should be interesting.
I'm drinking Harpoon IPA now.. it's a classic in the northeast, and I can see why. If you could go to every bar and restarant and get a bottle of it, I think you'd be in pretty good shape. It's not really much of an IPA (compared to Sweetwater IPA, which is the most intense one I've had access to) but it's good beer, sort of a ballsy pale ale very much like the 2007 Sierra Nevada anniversary ale. It's more floral on the nose and bready tasting than citrus. Really nice though, I'm going to be buying more once the SN anniversary ale dries up.

Drinking a nice, crisp and refreshing Dragonhead Stout. This is one of my all time favorite beers for a lazy day. It's so damn refreshing, probably due to the fact that it isn't as thick and heavy as most stouts.

seriously, whoever you bummed that shit from needs a beating. It may be one of the most pathetic beers I've ever seen. Do people give bad beer to underaged kids on purpose? because thats all I ever see them drink.

went to this badass bar where my brother lives that has several good beers on tap as well as lots of beers in bottles. i only had stuff on tap, including: rogue glen (pretty hoppy and bitter), 8ball oatmeal stout, paulaner salvatore, and i think that was it...i forget honestly. they had several brooklyn beers on tap, some unibroue ephemere, woodchuck amber cider, and a few others i can't remember.
at his house, we had some delirium tremens, i brought a bottle of gouden carolus grand cru of the emperor, and bells two hearted ale. had some spiced wheat beer today with lunch, but i forget the name of it.

samuel smith and samuel adams are good guys to hang out with all the time.. my other friends (jack, jim, jose`, gordon) usually overstay their welcome and cause some fuckin problems.

new beers so far:
sweetwater 420 pale ale: good floral hops, well balanced taste, I'll be buying a lot more. always support local-ish beer. The pale ale market is hard to get into when there's Sierra Nevada nationwide but this stuff hits the spot too.
abita pecan ale: unlike other brown ales I've had, probably because of the pecan. Tastes a bit bitter, and the nut taste really comes out after a couple of seconds in your mouth. I might drink this one again if I feel like something nutty, but I'm looking for something sweeter in a pure brown ale.
samuel adams octoberfest 2007: good stuff... sweet and malty, easy going. It's still close to 90 degrees here all the time but I am going to buy more of this stuff, because I want to have some on hand when the first cool autumn day comes around. I think anyone would like a glass of this.
flying dog snakedog IPA: fuckin hopstile! Fuck, this is what I was hoping Harpoon IPA would be. This is what i've been missing since Sweetwater IPA was confiscated from Alabama. I'm drinking it right now and it's going to be a go-to beer I think, until we get our laws changed anyway. Strong grapefruity citrus smell before I even got the bottlecap fully detatched, and tastes of pure bitter hops beating the fuck out of my tongue. trippy, creepy label too that i dont want to look at while i'm drunk. I remember seeing that all the flying dog ales only had average ratings on beeradvocate and passing on them, but now i'm gonna have to double back.

fuck i was posting here and closed my damn tab accidentally. snakedog rules...despite what some people have said. it is a pretty good ipa. my favorite beer from them i'd say. i think a lot of the shit talking is because they are one of the larger micro breweries. they sell their beer in a lot of grocery stores over here now...also several bars have the amber lager on tap. too bad they don't have a better one on tap.
haven't had those other beers. abita is a pretty good brewery...i've only had the amber, turbodog, and the golden.
tonight i didn't have a fucking drop of beer...am drinking some clear bacardi.
yesterday and the day before i had a glass of bells two hearted ale. good god that is a great ipa. floral smell, bitter hoppy taste. fucking delicious. easily one of my favorite IPAs, making it one of my favorite beers ever. damn good, try it if you can.

cool...i've tried the aventinus once, haven't heard of those other two though. sounds good.
haha i hear you on the high price. for me, that would be a few of the dogfish head beers or other larger corked bottles. initially, i see them and say "god damn that's expensive" and move along. ultimately, i wind up saying fuck it, i'm not gonna be buying one every week or even month..i might as well give it a try.
went to the store today to reup on some liquor (which is working out great! i drink several glasses a night and have been steadily losing weight simultaneously..down from an initial ~200 to between 183 and 184. coke zero is the shit.) got some more rum and bought a few beers.. grabbed a bottle of trois pistoles cause it's been a while since i've had any of the unibroues, a bottle of red hook late harvest autumn ale (seasonal obviously) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/153/28712 , and since the last time i had aventinus was at that beer gathering and was consumed amongst a lot of other beers, i figured i'd join you in a glass.
they had a few other brews from the same company, but at just a little over 3 bucks a bottle, i didn't feel like spending too much.

not familiar with those first three.
http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/1060138 mardesous & bbq
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style_pairings/ some general tips, and if you click beer and food forum (you might have to be registered at BA) there are tons of threads like the first link i posted.
i'm not very up to speed on food pairings..i know IPAs go with spicy foods...i'm sure those last two would be fine since they aren't very "big" beers in terms of flavor. maybe try the blanc? either way..let us know what you went with and how it was.

Get to drink some liquor tonight. Crown Royal and Jack Daniel's.

Heavy rains here from Tropical Storm Humberto blowback yesterday and my phone lines quit working... I spent today low crawling and duck walking in the dark under my house in the mud running new well-protected telephone wires and rewiring the jacks. That calls for beer at the end of a job well done.. I had another excellent 420 pale ale and the Atlanta Brewing Company's flagship Red Brick Ale. It's a nice brown ale, nutty like the Abita Pecan although not advertised as such. My mom even liked it. Since I support local-ish beer, I will definitely drink a lot of these breweries' beers, at least until Old Towne Brewing is reopened in Huntsville, AL.
I had the Left Hand Brewing Co's Milk Stout yesterday I think, it was pretty damn nutty too, not what I was expecting from a milk stout. This Red Brick reminds me of it a lot. It wasn't bad but I'd rather go for something sweet like Mackeson's or Samuel Adams in a milk/sweet stout and grab a brown ale for malty nutty flavors.

huh..haven't heard of those unibroues. i'm assuming they are pretty good though hah.
mathias, that sucks about your phone..definitely calls for a beer now that it's all fixed. red brick ale is a strange name for a brown ale..i'd think it was an amber or red ale.
bass you try that aventinus yet? i'm having mine now..nice beer. smells kinda like dark fruit and wheat. nice flavor as well. i'll have to give those other two or three they had a try.

I had it tonight. Fuck. Fantastic. Had this smokey bacon smell and taste to it. It was extremely delicious. I wouldn't even call it roasted, but definitely smoke. It's a damn shame I'd have to drive 15 hours to Ontario to drink this..
Good news is my friend and I, or whoever else decides to come are going to be making a bus trip($119 round trip) to Bangor sometime in the very near future for a night of two of partying. I'm definitely packing light and plan on taking as much as I can(no pun intended) worth of beer home. Although I don't think there are many regulars from Maine..if anyone wants to meet up that would be great. lol.
Also had a revamped, unfiltered growler of Garrison Imperial Pale Ale. It was being brewed at 6.5%abv, but the guy filling the growler said this batch was 6.9%abv, Sweet, I can feel it. lol. Had a bomber of Rogue Smoke Ale and have not had the Mill Street Wit my friend left for me. I have to get up in 4 hours for a 8.5 hour work shift so I'll probably save that, another bottle of Garrison IPA(which has a new label stating it's UNFILTERED), Delirium Tremens, Chimay Red and my stockhold of three-year-old Rochefort 10's for another night.
Cheers motherfuckers!

bob - hmm sounds ok i guess...not sure they sell it down my way.
bass - yea, that stuff is pretty tasty. after i finish OCS in newport, ri, i'll be relatively close to NS. maybe we can do some drinking before i head off elsewhere.
how'd you like the rogue smoked ale? i didn't like it. i'm not a fan of smoked ales. i like a little smoky flavor to things like porters or stouts, but not a "real smoked ale." just can't get around the taste.

the autumn seasonal Sweetwater barleywine is coming out next week.. it's called Sweetwater Donkey Punch. "at 10% apv and 90 IBUs, you'll know it when it hits you in the back of the head"... it joins the Summer Hummer wheat beer, Happy Endings imperial stout, and 420 extra pale ale as one of the most awesome beer names ever.

I really enjoyed the Aventinus a lot. I thought about how good it would go with a nice meal such as a pot roast with roasted potatoes. *drools*
I did like the Smoke Ale, I had it once before several months ago. Although, I had it after the Aventinus is was a little weak. lol. I forgot to mention I had a Sam Smith Pale Ale, another beer I hadn't drank in almost a year. I love the Samuel Smith house yeast. Rogue's pacman yeast also gives all their beers that slight tinge.
Graf, when we do another beer trade I'll have to give you a bottle of Garrison IPA. It definitely blows the Propeller IPA out of the water tenfold. On the BA forums, this is what the brewmaster had to say.
"canadametal: Thanks for the kudos! IPA will be unfiltered only from this point forward. As for the other brews I've already reformulated all the Garrison beers and they are coming around nicely but still more improvements to come.
For new beers we'll have unfiltered wheat ready in bombers a little later this week, basically an American Weizen style brewed with our house yeast. More on the horizon."
I'll have to re-try some of their other beers so perhaps they can be trade-able for you.
I have no idea what to expect from a new Weizen, but I can't wait to try it.
I've been somewhat mentioning another trade out of nowhere. lol. Are you in a stable living area to do it? Also, when would you be in RI? The drive to Maine couldn't be too bad. We aren't yet sure when we'd go but would stay for only 3 days or so.

yea, that aventinus is good stuff. i grabbed a bottle of their "original hefe weizen" when i was just at the store yesterday. haven't had it yet, but looking forward to it.
that garrison ipa sounds great! i'd say i'm in a decent place to do a trade. just need to find a box and perhaps buy some more bubble wrap since i have no clue where or how much i have left. anything you have your heart set on? heres a list of beers i have had/can get (for the most part) http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c...beer/?start=all there are some new ones towards the top that i haven't posted since i was either being lazy or doing something else at the time.
i'm at a new address, and would also need yours again i believe..i'll check my pms, might still be in there.
as for rhode island, i'll be up there during the winter most likely hah..still not 100% sure on when i'll be there.
it's the shit being able to talk to the brewers and owners of beer companies on that site! there was a thread about brooklyn beers coming to florida and the head brewer was posting in there, so you know the info you get is solid.

ehh i've had nights where i didn't drink as much and felt more drunk than other nights..i think it was because of lack of food throughout the day. also being out in the sun drains a bit of energy from you..especially drinking in the sun.
one night in particular that was funny was back when i was a senior in high school in jacksonville, nc (camp lejeune, a marine base). we spent a long damn time getting our beers since none of us were 21 at the time..we finally got a bunch of 40s and went to go drink them. it was cold by nc standards..and we were drinking our first 40, and by some odd twist of fate, we decided we'd rather just hang out inside and didn't drink anymore. we couldn't drink inside cause my friends parents were there. haha so we spent the rest of the night just hanging out..watching tv or a movie and playing some snes.
was one hell of a blue moon...i don't think in the decade or so that i've been drinking have i ever thought "ehh..i guess i'd rather just hang out and not drink." much less have others agree with me!
as for the beer talk..just gotta get out there and try more beers. you'll get it down more and more as you try more beers. i basically found out there was a store that sold "other" beer..went there, told them what macro beers i liked and that i wanted to try new stuff. they pointed me in the direction of some not to crazy stuff...something simple that wouldn't make me not want to try other beers. from there i got a decent foothold on the styles, then started learning which ones i liked more than others..also WHY i liked them more than others. the latter part of that came a little down the road from realizing which styles appealed to me.
eventually i said fuck it and just went after everything. you never know..just cause you don't like a certain style..there are always unique ones that will surprise you. just like there are always certain beers in a style you love that you don't like. now i continue my quest with trying beers i haven't had before..but still always grab other favorites that i have enjoyed before. somewhere between 300-400 different beers now...and LOTS left to go. very interested to see the difference in selection once i move..though i will definitely miss total wine and more. that place fucking rules...it's my mecca, only i don't pray towards it a few times a day.

Yeah really, I don't think that's ever happened to me.
Jeez graf, that's quite the fucking page of beer pictures. I'll take a look through at least some of them. Surely I'll come up with some beers that I've been eager to try.
I should be over to the Garrison brewery sometime this week(more than likely Thursday, pay day lol) and hopefully the Weizen will be there so I can say if it's worth trading off if you want a bomber. I also haven't tried the new Garrison Unfiltered 6.9% in bottled form(I have one I forgot at my dad's), so I'll also let you know how that is as well. I remember the bottle still saying 6.5% though, not sure if that's even legal to sell misprinted. lol.
It's great talking to brewmasters, even not in person like on the BA Forums. I've seen many Garrett Oliver posts and it's always exciting to read what he has to say. It's funny to notice he didn't do any beer reviews..haha, if I were him I'd be giving my beers top marks.

haha i can't think of any other time that's ever happened. i know there have been times when i felt like shit and just didn't want to touch the stuff..but that isn't the same.
added 3 pics more that were on my camera and hadn't been uploaded yet.
including the aventinus and this one: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3184.jpg
their original hefe weizen.
had more of a head (not much) but it sat for a minute before i took the picture.
darker than i had imagined..guess what it smells like? wheat! smells nice..smells slightly malty, don't detect the presence of hops. slightly bready, but not very much so i guess.
taste is good..pretty smooth..notice a bit of carbonation. similar overall to the nose..wheat flavor, backed with some malty taste. overall i prefer the aventinus and even other random wheat beers. it is good, but not "special" ha. would have no problems with being forced to drink lots of it, but don't plan on spending anymore on this stuff. good, just not great. would prefer to try something new, or fall back on others that i like more.
who is garret oliver? haha yea, i'd definitely have some more reviews if i was as much into beer as someone that is a brewmaster. i haven't posted a review there in a while (or anywhere for that matter), so i figured i'd sit down with this one to post.
edit..
trans, you were asking about food pairings the other day and i remembered i had this thing i got at total that sam adams made. i posted it before, but this thead has been moving along, so no telling how far back it is.

ahh hah. posted in the thread about them coming to florida, but didn't know his name..unless his name is his user name.. was a few months ago though.
i liked their EIPA, and the brown ale and (golden?) lager were good..but none of them really stuck out as something i'd call great. i'm glad to have tried them..and will try other beers of theres for sure. so far theres only one here i haven't had..the pennant ale. i know they have several others, they just don't sell them here yet.

Yes, his screen name is also his real name. lol.
I haven't tried any of their beers, they only sell them in a couple provinces in Canada.

get rid of the sediment in a hefe weizen and add a piece of fruit? come on...
Samuel Adams has reintroduced their Imperial Pilsner for a limited time, since the hallertau hop harvest is going the way they like it. I hear it's fantastic. Maybe I'll get to try one soon...

yea, that is one style i pour the sediment in. hell with hoegaarden they even say to swirl it up and then pour it in.
every other beer with sediment doesn't get it..i just try to leave about a centimeter or quarter of an inch at the bottom. kinda a bitch with those delirum bottles.

bah sorry i ment be sure to swirl the bottle so you dont get a gang bang of it at the end. also i never said that you HAVE to put fruit in it, i suggested it as an alternitive for people just getting into hefe.
im going to pick up some pilsner now...damn sounds good.

red hook late harvest autumn ale. (had the name close earlier..)
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3185.jpg
not much head and i gave it a fairly head provoking pour. no big deal.. smells malty..faint suggestions of fruit or some sort of sweet something or other..and weak presence of spices. especially since this is a seasonal beer for the fall..was expecting a bit more there.
malt is the dominant flavor. light-medium body. dry finish.. makes me want to take another sip..but i'll have to get something else to drink once i get to the bottom of the glass. hop flavor is detectable..but just barely. decent beer..kinda disappointed..especially due to the lack of seasonal flavoring. i'd MUCH rather have the dogfish head punkin ale. would drink it again, but i think that is the last time i buy any of this stuff.
edit...bad news it seems! http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/1097361 ha that garret oliver guy posted there. it's a small internet.
http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/1091254
http://www.belmont-station.com/2007...m-hopunion.html
seems hop production is having a bit of trouble which could lead to a few things...some breweries closing due to lack of hops, can't afford them, or whatever...but also breweries switching to different varieties of hops and changing the flavor.
on top of that, garret oliver said malt prices could go up by 100%
i hope this shit doesn't ruin beer as we know it..i know there will always be some good beer, just hope nobody has to close their doors or change their recipes (unless the beer gets better that way hah).

I drank so much saturday night that I have no intention of getting drunk again for a while. Like, at least a month. I blacked out and woke up with vomit in my hair. Not a good time.

cool..don't think i've seen that one.
http://www.stonebrew.com/11th/ale/ i fucking want some of this shit! a black ipa?? i've never had any stone before, but i've never heard anyone say anything bad about it. it's like an imperial stout IPA i guess. was kinda a running joke on 4chan in the food section..but now it seems it is true. sounds fucking weird..but i love both styles, and really want to try some of this stuff.
