Total Wine has a great beer catalog according to their website. I would definitely stop off there.
I went to a Publix supermarket today that had a good selection for Alabama. I found Sierra Nevada's 2007 anniversary IPA and Anchor Porter. On the way home i decided it feels like a Maker's Mark night... or maybe week, depending on how things go.
No I ain't seen my baby since a nigh' on a week,
gonnaa get drunk man, till I can't even speak
Gonna get high man, listen to me
one drink ain't enough Jack, you better make it three
I wanna get drunk I'm gonna make it real clear,
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer

the sierra nevada anniversary ale is a good light IPA. It's hard to get any IPAs here because of 6% alcohol limit. we had Sweetwater for years but it was very recently (just after I discovered beer of course) found to be over 6% and it was literally seized by the alcoholic beverage control board. This is an ok replacement, too bad it's a limited time deal. Maybe Bridgeport IPA is good.

Haha, yes indeed. I enjoy the satisfaction of having all the alcohol in the house drank. Usually it's not the case though because my friends always get too tired and want to pass out or go home.

hah yea, that especially sucks when you're hanging out with people you haven't seen in a long time. sometimes you can't blame them though, they have work the next day or whatever. on the other hand..i guess sometimes it is a good thing so you don't stay up all night and drink a bunch only to sleep away half of the next day.
tonight i think i'm gonna have some jameson or glenmorangie. not too much though..the glen was expensive, and the jameson i don't have much of.

damn I'm in such a great mood... I was drinking because I was depressed about a girl (a continuation from yestaday), and then the girl made me feel happy again while I was already drunk, so now I am drunk and happy. 2 sierra nevada wheats (which is a decent beer but I dont think i'd buy more, I drank the last 2 to get them out of my fridge) and some more of the maker's mark bourbon. I'm one happy camper. I will not remember posting this.
edits (by popular demand): I am at drinking level 3.. .I would totally buy you a drink if i liked your face, aand maybe do other things to your face.

yea, that stuff was ok..was a while ago i first tried it (only time trying it). wasn't something i ever bought again..though i think my tastes have shifted a bit since then, so maybe i'd give it another shot and have a different opinion. i'm kinda hit or miss on the dogfish head beers. some are really damn good, others are just strange. i didn't even finish the midas touch i had...i tried.
there's the raison d' extra..i've never had that one before though. it's expensive too. probably pretty strong as well.
that sucks about the sierra nevada guy. would be worse if it was the head brewmaster, but still a shitty deal.
today i hit up the total wine near my grandmas house while i was out buying some frozen mice. i only bought 4 beers..since technically i shouldn't be drinking any beer. got a clipper city - heavy seas red sky at night (saison ale) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/898/17625 , pete's wicked ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/126/1397 , brooklyn east india pale ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/45/147 , and boulder beer sweaty betty blonde http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/130/17819
last night i killed the jameson..wasn't very much at all, just a couple of drinks (barb ) ..and had some of the glenmorangie. woke up with some still in my glass on the desk here..will polish that off later along with one of the beers, followed by more scotch.

Graf...to be quite honest, the more I drink this beer, the more I like it. I don't mean the drunker I get on this beer....I mean the more times I try it. THis is my 2nd day drinking off this 6 pack (fuckin crazy, i know) and it really does start to taste better the more familiar with it I become. You should give it another try.
That really fuckin sucks about the Sierra Nevada guy. Those Pale Ales are reasonably priced and really delicious.

indeed. the pale ale is a great session beer. you should try making black and tans with that and the stout. not too shabby either.
i'll try that d' etre again...i wanted to try the d'xtra or d'extra, but it is expensive, and wasn't thrilled with the d etre...so it was put on the backburner.
drinking some of the pete's wicked ale. not too impressed with this stuff. i had seen it online a number of times, so i wanted to give it a go.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3116.jpg
smells pretty malty, and kind of bitter. tastes much the same. not that great. has a little bit of carbonation to the mouth feel. meh.
i knew i should've tried the brooklyn eipa first.

Since I have minimal money to spare, I rarely buy scotch. If I'm going to drink some rye.. I go for Canada's own Crown Royal, or Wild Turkey.

Strange. I see it's made by Seagrams, which also makes Crown Royal...must be their bottom of the barrel(punz) whisky.
The "cheap" stuff here is called "Golden Wedding"..which like all of our booze, isn't very cheap at all.

DFH is on my list of stuff to buy when I go to Atlanta.. well IF I go to Atlanta. A couple of underaged drinkers I know expressed interest in getting some cheap 40s from Atlanta, and I said I'd go with them to be the frontman with zero markup/handler's fees as long as I get to stop and buy my own stuff too. Being the only person of legal age means you don't pay for gas, IMO. For a free ride to Green's Beverages (greensbeverages.com) I'd buy them whatever the hell 40 oz. swill they want at the nearest gas station.
I've been trying forever to get my friend to send me some bottles from California, but he cant be fucked to get off his ass and go to the beer store. That is supreme laziness. I can't trade beer with anyone really because I can't get a tradeable beer in the first place, but I was gonna order him some metal discs or vinyls, band shirts, DVDs or whatever he wants of equal value to the shipped beer and have it shipped directly to him.
if anyone here wants to take me up on that kind of trade, we should talk. Beer for metal.. oh yeah.

I'd be interested in the shirts. What size and what bands? A 4 pack of DFH for a shirt sounds about right (that shit is expensive).

I was talking about buying new stuff, not sending what I already own. i guess basically I'm trading indirectly with cold hard cash, which is about the only commodity I have. Unless you want my body or perhaps a cancer patient wig donation.
I'll get you any shirt or whatever from any distro or record label, or hell some athletic supporters, nurses shoes, and exercise videos from Amazon.com if you want them (i won't ask), just send me the link. A lot of online stores let you submit a billing address and then a separate shipping address if you're sending the merch as a gift,so I'd just put you down as the shipping address, or ship it myself if I must. I'm basically looking to buy beer off you guys, except I'd rather do it this way instead of dealing with money. I don't want to gain anything (except beer) and I dont even mind taking a loss because it's a bitch for the other guy packing those bottles and getting it shipped out.
If anyone wants to discuss it on AIM or MSN, send a PM.
I found a nice goblet in the kitchen today and spent some time getting it cleaned up. I drank Sierra Nevada anniversary ale out of it. Not bad at all, but it would be great to have a fine Belgian beer to go in it. Until our state legislature decides that we are NOT, in fact, second class citizens, I guess i'll have to keep wishing.

trading random shit for beer eh? got any hot sisters/cousins/mom?
man that is shitty about those laws there...hopefully once some new blood is in charge, they will be younger and have a desire to join the rest of the country in having a much better selection of alcoholic beverages. you can buy liquor there right? if you can, that shit doesn't make a bit of sense to me.
in an hour or two, i'm heading up to best buy for my grandma..gonna swing by total wine and more on the way back since it is right there. might grab a couple beers, but my main purpose there is a big bottle of vodka.
was really shitty the other day..i was at total and thought about buying some vodka, but thought..nah, i've got some scotch left at home. wrong! i didn't remember killing it the night before.
also, i had the brooklyn EIPA and the clipper city saison ale. both were quite good. the EIPA had a bit of a hoppy smell, but a more balanced taste..i'd happily buy more of it. i took a pic of it, but am lazy and haven't uploaded it yet.
the saison is only the second of that style i've ever had. i think i accidentally poured a little more of the yeast than i intended, but it was still very good. spicy, but not hot and spicy, just could taste spices. smelled fairly yeasty..there was a lot in the bottom, and perhaps my grandma had moved it around while getting something in the fridge which stirred it up a little. i took a pic of it as well...but again i haven't done anything with it.

yes we can buy liquor, I think even 190 proof shit, there's not a limit on distilled spirits as far as I know. Wine is limited to 14.9% apv, and thats what we want to raise the beer limit to, since they're both fermented I don't see what's with the fucking double standard.
Wine and spirits must favor the state income somehow, that's the only thing I can think of.

yea, that is fucked! what is their reasoning? the only obvious reason i could think of would be to prevent people from drinking beer that is too strong. which wouldn't make any sense if you can buy a handle of scotch or something else.
i guess they just have something against beer.
heres a pic of the brooklyn eipa...i chose the blurry one vs the clear one since this one is more true to the color of the beer. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3120.jpg
the clipper city red sky at night saison ale.

went to best buy for my grandma today, stopped by guitar center since it was right there. they are having a 43rd anniversary sale..but i can't be spending money like that. just fucked around on some guitars for a little.
anyway, on the way back i hit up total (wine and more..i just call it total for short), got a 1.75 of smirnoff, a bottle of bells two hearted ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1093 really good shit!, a bottle of shiner blonde http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1093 had the bock..figured i'd try the only other one i've seen on sale. terrapin rye pale ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2372/5948 http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3131.jpg drinking this stuff now. it says the rye is a rare ingredient in this style of beer and gives it it's signature taste..also made with 5 varieties of hops. smells pretty hoppy...makes me think of another beer but i can't place it. medium - light body, pretty balanced..but a little more on the hoppy side. sorta bitter and leaves my mouth somewhat dry...i guess that is what the next sip is for. all in all, i'd say this is a good beer. i forget the other style they have at the store, but i will be trying it. got a bottle of lagunitas "special release" sirius (a hi-gravity cream ale) http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/16159 , orkney dragonhead stout http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/118/5781
i hit up the grocery store on the way back to pick up some deodorant and juice (i still hate vodka), and there is this liquor store next door that says it carries beer and cigars as well. i figured what the hell? and checked it out since total is a lot farther away than this store. they had an alright selection, wasn't gonna get anything then..but then i saw some 1837 from unibroue http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3130.jpg http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/2055 couldn't pass up a unibroue that i've never had or seen before. bought a 6 pack since that's all they had. might crack one open tonight or tomorrow.
ahhh beer.

The legislators who support our Prohibition-era laws come up with stupid excuses, like how kids will start getting bombed on imperial Russian stouts or a 6 pack of belgian tripels and go kill someone in a drunk driving accident; arguments not supported by logic or facts.
In reality they are A.) ignorant Christian slime Neo-prohibitionists who don't want alcohol to gain any ground in the state so it can eventually be eliminated, or B.) Getting paid off by megabrewers and their distributors who enjoy limiting our purchasing options. Or C.) all of the above.

i've known some people that love guinness that will only drink those tall boys unless they get it straight from the tap. they never get the bottles. i'm rather impartial to be honest.
randomly i was looking for health info on various beers and stumbled across some list that had the carbs and calories...guinness was surprisingly low. not the lowest obviously...but compared to bud and whatnot, i was shocked.
you ever had the 1837? i didn't have one tonight..gonna crack one open tomorrow, just have never seen this shit before. the guy at the store seems cool...definitely appreciates good beer. he said he has to drive out to orlando to get the stuff...i'm sure he gets other shit there as well..but thats a few hours away. i told him i had had all the unibroue i could find, but never the 1837 or raftman..i'm sure there are a ocuple others but i can't think of them. he said he had raftman but wasn't too impressed.

drunk at sunrise.. yes. sweet.
I had some of the Maker's Mark and a sam adams stout... nice combination. I continued drinking Maker's Mark and added a Rogue porter. Then more bourbon because i'm feelin crazy like that. in a few hours i will not.
edit 10:35 AM. I do not.

The only thing I've found that mixes good with Goldschlager is Jagermeister.

Jagermeister is a 70 proof herbal liqueur. It does taste a lot like licorice and even though I hate licorice, I find Jager to be delicious. It's supposed to be served below freezing and is commonly mixed with red bull or other similar energy drinks.

the 1837 i bought is old and bad it seems. that or this is easily the worst unibroue beer ever. i'm going with the former..
i tried some of the beers i aged. the conditions weren't right and they all had a similar old beer taste..like the beer that i got with the brewing kit. the guy that gave it to me had made it a while ago. the 1837 had that similar taste too it..so i'm thinking about taking the 6 pack back to the store and telling they guy they are fucked..probably nobody buys the shit.. i didn't even know it was a unibroue beer until i looked at it closer.

I'm gonna be hitting up a bar tonight for a local metal show. Last time I checked they only have about 5 beers on tap, one of which is the mighty black butte porter brewed by Deschutes. Too bad they don't have something like 8ball stout on tap. Come to think of it, I don't think I've been to a bar that has 8ball stout on tap, and it's a damned shame.

Round here you don't find many 'exotic' beers on tap at all, there's only ever Guinness and then an ale or two, never any nice stouts or porters... rubbish!

I only had a six pack of Propeller ESB last night. I got a buzz because I beer-bonged three, and chugged the rest...on an empty stomach. There are ways around getting a buzz with a small amount of alcohol.
I'm seriously getting sick of drinking the same beers though...I may take a trip with my dad up to Ottawa within a month to visit my brother. I'd love to see what I can get up there.

haha, Yes you can. From Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine you can ferry to and from Southern NS...on the ultra fast THE CAT.
http://www.catferry.com/
I've thought about it before..it's kinda pricey though. Taking a bus to Maine is pretty damn cheap though. I'd much rather a road trip with my friends..hopefully next summer.

yea, that looks like a fairly expensive ferry ride. they might not like you loading all kinds of beer on board either...
you could just take a shitload of empty luggage then fill it all with beer.
http://shop.belgianshop.com/ ships globally...but i'm sure it isn't cheap. just make it a huge beer order to spread out the shipping fee.
http://www.liquidsolutions.biz/main/ i don't think this one ships internationally unfortunately..but i could be wrong. ha and on the front page is lagunitas kill ugly radio...and IPA in tribute to frank zappa.
another reason i think this 1837 is no good...lack of carbonation.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3136.jpg
i'd love to try some that isn't skunked.. (i really need to unpack my beer glasses)
drank about half of it and poured the rest down the drain. so i poured some more beer.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3137.jpg
boulder beer co. sweaty betty (wheat beer). was a good tasting beer..nothing special or really unique. standard wheat beer.
took moes advice and am giving the dfh raison d' etre another go.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3138.jpg
smells malty, slightly alcoholic (8% ABV) almost smells a little smoky, but not very much so. actually..the smoky smell could be dark fruit (raisins) coming through.
tastes mostly of malts..can't say i notice the 8% when i take a sip. a little sugary/sweet, medium body, honestly i'm having a little trouble picking this one apart. taste seems complex, but very subtle. i think i can taste it more after i swallow the sip i took. definitely not like any (or at least many) beers i've had before. better than i remember it being..but i tried it early on in my exploration of other beers besides the macro brands.

lagunitas sirius ale ("high gravitiy, cream ale")
the smell is great. the first thing i thought when i smelled was exactly this: "this is going to be a good beer!" smells hoppy..like a nice IPA. i guess if you don't like hops or the smell they create, you might not like this one. for being almost 8% (7.6%), this beer doesn't smell too strong as far as alcohol content goes.
medium body, tastes great. mostly a good hoppy flavor, balanced out with the malt, but still the hops are right up front. almost sugary tasting..sweet in a way i guess. not too bitter at first considering the presence of hops...kinda settles on a hoppy bitterness after each sip. kinda seems like a creamy IPA really.. very smooth. will definitely buy this stuff again. soon too, as it's only a seasonal release.

Since Saturday when I was sick all day I havent felt like drinking shit... I could barely finish a good beer, something about the taste of any alcohol is making me queasy. Sierra Nevada anniversary ale 2007 is piney, it reminds me of gin, which I had some really bad experiences with awhile back and now I am thinking of them again every time I belch. I need to get my taste buds straightened out for a couple days man...
I think a good brown ale or a Boston Lager would be excellent to have, but I don't, just the beers I drank when I got so hung over.

bell's two hearted ale

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/1093
a really damn good ipa. i heard it called a double ipa before..but ba has it just as an american ipa.
guess what it smells like? a great smell..i could sit here and smell it all night...hops! smells pretty damn hoppy..almost citrusy it's so hoppy smelling. mmm. guess what it tastes like? it tastes fucking great, and very hoppy as well. kinda has some pine flavor to it..but not too upfront. the citrus like smell comes through as well in the taste.
this is easily one of my favorite ipas, and possibly one of my favorite beers. if you see this, buy it. there is some sediment on the bottom..i didn't pour it. i normally don't pour it unless there are specific instructions to do so.
medium body, pretty easy to drink..not the greatest session beer, but i'd have no problem consuming this things all night.
in the end...i should've bought more of this stuff!

I've only had the Indica IPA once and I have to say I don't even remember what it tasted like. I do remember liking it though. Have you ever tried the 8ball stout? It's excellent.

yea, the 8 ball stout is good. the only other lost coast beers i've had are the downtown brown ale, alleycat amber ale, indica ipa, and the great white. all pretty tasty brews.
had some of this yesterday:
dragonhead stout from the orkney brewery in scotland.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3143.jpg
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/118/5781
it was pretty good, but i wouldn't say great. had a nice smell and taste. the taste had a hint of chocolate to it, but was also pretty smoky. i liked it much better than the only other beer i've had from that brewery though..skullsplitter. not a stout..but wasn't crazy about that one.
so i finally got off my ass and took the 1837 back. i wasn't sure what to expect since i've never returned beer before haha..especially to some small liquor store. luckily the guy was really cool about it. apparently it has happened before from time to time. he let me swap it out for something else even though it was one beer short. so i got a 6 of fullers esb (was looking at trying to sam adams octoberfest, but couldn't remember if i had already had it before..and decided fullers > sam adams). also picked up a bottle of theakston old peculier http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/359/926 and a bottle of unibroue raftman http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22/793 .
i'm glad i waited a few days to go back because they didn't have either of these beers then. they had some other new stuff but i didn't feel like spending too much. had to cough up a few extra dollars because my purchase was a little more than the credit for the one 6 pack.

I've tried the Theakston Old Peculiar. Only one place around here you can buy it. It was really good from what I remember.
I'm going to get a growler or two of fresh Garrison IPA on Saturday. I can't wait to try it. I'm not sure if they have any unfiltered beer left though. Oh well.

that ipa sounds pretty damn delicious. just read that one guys review. i wish there were places around here i could go get growlers refilled.
the old peculier i hadn't ever seen before until i moved to this coast of florida. didn't get it before cause i had never heard of it, but the guy at the store said it was pretty good..and the rating isn't too shabby.
just cracked open an esb..i looked and i guess i didn't manage a picture of this one..so i don't know if i posted a review of it or not. got the picture..depending on how lazy i am, i might post a review of it later...i have 5 more to go.
edit..
fuller's ESB
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3148.jpg
smells somewhat sweet and malty..a bit like caramel. there is also a decent amount of hops in the smell as well but not nearly overwhelming in the least. smells good and balanced.
taste is similar..lightly sweet/sugary up front but fades into a somewhat dry hoppy bitterness that is held in check by the malt. at just under 6% ABV i can't say i can detect the booze in the flavor at all.
great beer, with a medium/light body that i could drink lots of. their other beers (that i know of) are also good, and certainly worth a go. london porter and london pride are the only two i've seen for sale here in the florida, but they have other beers that might be available elsewhere in the us or canada...besides being available over in europe.

The Dragonhead stout is delicious from what I remember. I think I payed around $4 for a pint of it. To me is was really refreshing for a stout, light in alcohol(I think it's 4%) but very tasty.
I actually enjoyed the skullsplitter. To my knowledge, it a barley wine, and barley wines can be pretty funky tasting.

BA has the skullsplitter listed as a scotch ale..which sounds somewhat similar to a barley wine style ale. haven't been to crazy about any scotch or scotch style ales so far.. one i do want to try is scotch silly. it came recommended form a few of the people i met at some BA gatherings. never got around to trying it though.
as for lost coast..i'd love to try their imperial stout, pale ale, and chocolate porter. maybe even the raspberry chocolate stout. only problem is i've never seen any of these on sale down here. i guess i'd try all their beers..i've liked all the ones i've tried so far.
had another beer tonight...
shiner blonde
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3150.jpg
an alright golden lager. head was small and disappeared quickly. the bottle says " this bohemian style golden lager is a classic blonde beer. distinctive, flavorful, and refreshing. shiner blonde is faithfully brewed today just as it was in 1909"
for a golden lager, i'd say it's a good solid beer. something you could easily drink all day and night..even on a hot day while grilling outside. other than that, it's not nearly what i'd call a great beer. kinda dull, standard lager flavor..had it earlier so i can't really recall much of the specifics. i'd drink it again for sure..especially over the likes of bud/miller/coors/etc. but i don't think i'll be buying any more.
so far i've had the bock and the blonde..both were decent enough that i'll try any more shiner beers that i come across. not sure what other styles they make though.

I've never been to fond of scotch ales either. I remember getting sick one night off of too many Pike Kilt Lifters and haven't had the desire to try any others since. I think I've had the raspberry chocolate stout but I though it was a brown ale. Either way it was a long time ago and I do remember liking the beer. If you can find it check out Samuel Smiths Imperial Stout. Also, if you want to try a decent barley wine Full Sail's Boardhead is pretty good. It's is very easy to drink especially considering it's around 9% ABV.
Hell I could talk about good beers all day long.
Has anyone here tried Three Floyds Dark Lord Imperial Stout? I heard it's one of the best.

I picked up a few new things today... Samuel Adams Boston Ale (not the lager), Blue Moon Pumpkin Ale (I've been wanting to try a pumpkin ale, and that's one of the few options we have here), and finally the elusive Weihenstephaner hefe weizen. Also I grabbed a couple SA Boston Lagers (which I'll drink tonight) and a 4 pack of Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. Its been too long since I hung out with Samuel and Samuel.

time, yea, i've had both...and i agree with trans...they are great beers. my grandma takes lots of trips to europe..one of her daughters (not my mom) used to live in the uk. she has a youngs bitter coaster hah. i told her i have had some of their beers but not that one. i'd try anything they put out for sure. they aren't extremely heavy that i recall..but i also don't remember thinking they were watery. it has been some months since i've had either though.
mathias - that weihenstephaner is good. this place i used to go to used to have that stuff on tap all the time. what is weird is that the glass they have says weihenstephan but the bottles say weihenstephaner.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...r/IMG_7535s.jpg
i haven't tried that pumpkin ale...i tried the shipyard pumpkin ale..but it is just weird to taste pumpkin in beer.

Yeah I think the glass logo commemorates the brewery itself, which is called Bayerische Staatsbrauerei (Bavarian state brewery) Weihenstephan, and Weihenstephaner is just the brand name they use for their beer (which of course means "from Weihenstephan", like Berliner or Brooklyner or [real] Budweiser). Their hefeweizen is like the highest-rated beer on Beeradvocate that we can get here (the only member of the top 100), and a couple of folks don't let it sit out on the store shelves too long.
Pumpkin ale does sound weird, but just weird enough for me to try at least once. I would rather have DFH's and not Blue Moon/CBC but yeah...
I saw some Rodenbach Grand Cru ( http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/216/673).. I might try that out next time, for something totally different.
and I also finally became an official FreetheHops member... free glass and a t-shirt baby, plus group meetings with beer tasting and trading and stuff.

I'm drinking a mirror pond pale ale which is going to be followed by a bottle of black butte porter and a few shots of goldschalger. Mirror pond isn't too bad actually, I used to hate this stuff.

Black Butte Porter is an old standby for me. It's well crafted and easy to drink. Aside from the low alcohol percentage this is one of the best beers available in the northwest. Mirror pond is another story. I've never been too fond of pale ales, and to be honest, this ranks pretty low on my list. India Pale Ales are another story. Dogfish Head's IPA selection is amazing. The 60 minute IPA is excellent, probably the best session beer I've had. The 90 minute is also outstanding, and has an ABV of 9%. They also make a 120 minute IPA which is a whopping 21% alcohol. I tried this a while back and I must say, for a beer that is 21% alcohol it's very drinkable.
