just why is alcohol exclusive to meal time, with you? who cares what it tastes good with. eat supper, drink after. and, in my case, eat 2-3 following suppers, about 5 hours later!

Basically any good beer can accompany the right food. He is just ill-informed.

i would probably agree with you i just haven't tasted much considering I am under the drinking age. I don't have a problem with beer or alcoholic beverages in general, i just have a problem with drinking to get wasted. I think if something makes you feel miserable after you do it there must be something wrong with that thing in the first place , but to each his own i guess.

I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end. Hey Mitch, do you want an apple? No, eventually it'll be a core...

honestly i wouldn't say most american beers suck...i'd say the most popular/distributed beers suck. there are a LOT of microbreweries here in the states, and many of them make amazing beer! i like to get drunk on beer, though it doesn't hold a candle to liquor in that respect. i just get a bit out of control sometimes when i'm drinking liquor.
i had quite the variety of beer last night at my "farwell" ba gathering. i don't remember some of the names of the beers..but i had many good ones, and a few that i didn't care for. had a couple sour ales...not my thing. though one was not so bad after trying another one. we split up this bottle of a limited release sour ale...so i interrupted my current sour ale that i got on accident (they brought me the wrong thing and i said fuck it i'll try it) the smaller amount (we split the one 750) was much more sour than the previous one and so once i got back to the previous one..it was ok. anyway..i'll try to remember, or even ask others what some of the beers were and let you guys know.

You can get drunk and feel fine the next day. I do that all the time. If you're a pussy, you can drink some water and eat some bread before going to sleep and you'll likely avoid the hangover unless you really drink too much, in which case you won't remember to drink some water before bed anyway.
The sun gives you cancer, guitar strings cut your fingers, typing gives you carpal tunnel, skateboarding nicks you to shit, love gives you heartbreak, Mexican food gives you the shits, Thai food burns your snot to rubbery ash, transcendent experiences leave you discontent with the quotidian world, cars kill the earth, metal gives you metal neck and bad hearing, TV and computer screens fuck your vision, and living brings with it a great spectrum of shitty feelings of various degrees, especially if you live a long time. If you don't want to get drunk then you don't want to get drunk, and that's all good, but if you don't want to get drunk because you 'avoid things that leave you feeling shitty' you'd better just killing yourself. That's a painful experience, true, but at the end of it you won't feel the least bit miserable. Or anything at all.
Someday I want people to explain to me why their arbitrary personal preferences have to be backed up with a pat little philosophy.

My point was more that you don't have to do any of those things. You can kill yourself and avoid any more potential unpleasantness.
Seriously, though, if you think any of those things on my list, most of which are optional, are at all worthwhile you should be able to see why we like drinking. Except that you've never had a great drunk, and until you do you're like a virgin saying that, because of all those tragic movies in which people fall in love and end up dead or unhappy because of it, sex can't really be worth it. Or in other words talking out of your ass.

all i know is have seen three good friends of mine die because of the stuff and ever since the last one i made a personal decision to never get drunk. O.K.? Geesh, lay off this is a forum, is it illegal to have an opinion? Oh, sorry I believe in something you don't. Cry about it.

I wasn't saying you shouldn't have an opinion, I was calling your philosophical reason for not drinking was bullshit. And hey! It turned out that it was. I'm not sure why you couldn't have said that to begin with instead of the bullshit you did throw out there, or why you got so upset when I called it bullshit when you clearly knew that it was (or else you wouldn't have had to give me a new story as to why you don't drink), but I am sure that you did exactly what I said.
And if you think I'm going to feel bad that friends of yours died from drinking as though I somehow should've known that based on what you actually said and not the biographical background info about you that none of us have access to, you've really got the right idea not to drink, because you're dumb enough already. You could've said that you don't drink because friends of yours died, and not because you shouldn't do something that makes you feel bad the next day, and everybody would have respected that.

I didn't even know this "debate" (more like slaughter) was going on...
Before i even post Tranny, Kirin Ichiban is the shit. It was a good tasting lager for the price. I had a 6 pack of it a few months back and it was a good buy.
The comments presented above by PST is exactly the kind of thing that makes me feel at ease when tremendous bullshit is presented to me.
Bassist of light, you have literally walked into probably one of the dumbest ways to ever argue something. If your opinions are based upon false to little knowledge then you are just as stupid as anybody else could possibly be. Its not that you don't drink, or dislike the thought of drinking its because your reasoning is absolutely horrible. And until you decide one day to actually sit down and logically reason decisions out you will always be ignorant.

i guess i should have said that in the first place, but i do back my reasoning otherwise. As i said it is not so much that something makes you feel bad the next day. Most of the time when i have seen friends of mine the next day after they got wasted the night before they don't just look bad, they look like trash. I don't understand the reasoning behind wanting to do something in excess for a short while in order to feel good when you know that after that euphoria has worn off reality kicks in and you feel sick.

Again you didn't understand the first post that PST made and until you reread it and draw all the parallels you will continue to look like a blubbering idiot.
Couldn't you say the same fucking thing about "feeling bad?" You don't feel bad for the rest of your life. Nearly every fucking conclusion he showed results in permanent damage.
Why don't you stop driving a fucking car because it COULD yield a crash and you would die? If you are so scared about living life because of the possibility of something bad happening, like PST said, off yourself now and there will be no more pain or suffering. (except by those who love you, of course)

its not so much the possibility of bad happening, it is more so the knowledge that something bad WILL happen. Pain and suffering i have already had enough of, and now i just do my best to avoid both. I guess my reasoning was faulty in the first place if you look at it the way pst is looking at it, but from my view, why do something which results in feeling sick, when i hate being sick. To me that makes no sense at all.
( wow, i really should have put it that way in the first place )

Again..... you still missed the entire point that he and now I am trying to make. But thats fine, people can wallow in their own fear because it allows personal security and if thats your choosing, so be it.
If life didn't have tribulations, life would be bland and boring.
ps. I love this "will" happen bullshit, because i'm pretty sure i got black out drunk this weekend and didn't feel anything the next day. And boy i had a good time with my friends....

i know i agree with what you said. I am trying to say and i should have originally said that i dont want to get drunk because i don't like feeling sick which usually is the result of being drunk unless you black out, and 3 friends of mine have passed because of substance abuse. I just admitted my original reasoning was way to general and i should have specified more.

I disagree with that. I think it would be much more fun being able to do anything you want, when you want without having to worry about negative consequences. I'd sit and do random shit all day without a care in the world if I could.
But yeah, quality of life would greatly diminish if people started to not do anything because they fear pain or death.

One thinks that, but if you indulge in things that are good for too long and happen to never know pain or displeasure you will be unable to enjoy things that you might be able to enjoy.
This is for the most part hypothetical but as i examine things make us happy, its generally because they fullfill things that remove displeasure and create... yes happiness. Without pain there is no enjoyment. But this is the alcohol thread.. so we'll keep the philosophy out of it.
Trans, i'm just curious but the amount that you drink (as it would appear) seems much more than what a person with medical problems should drink. Or does it not play any role in anything that has happened to you? (not trying to start some sort of thing about this, just curiosity got to me sometime before about asking this) Or do you not care?

edit...also in comment to "bad things WILL happen." sure they may, but they don't always. i've had great times getting completely shitfaced and the worst that happened was i stayed up late and slept in.
yea, i've had my days where i puked that night, or perhaps the next morning..but it is rare..can't remember the last time i puked..or maybe i was so drunk i forgot?
i'm sorry you lost friends, but how many other people do you know that haven't had those problems and drink/get drunk? i know LOTS of people that get drunk, and from what i can recall, none of them have lost their lives to alcohol. it makes me think of my friends mom. she got in a car accident and wasn't wearing her seatbelt. just by a freak coincidence, if she had been wearing it, they told her she would've died. now guess what? she NEVER wears it!

Brown ales are nutty, generally. That's a style I need to explore more...

honestly your best bet is to start off slow...jumping into a strong tasting beer could put you off to trying other beers. start with some GOOD lagers, or simple pale or amber ales. even a brown ale. just try a few beers of each style you can, and eventually you'll have a good general understanding of what you like. there are always beers in each style that you won't like no matter what.
as for nutty beers..the first that come to mind are rogue hazelnut brown nectar, and samuel smiths nut brown ale.
honestly the ss nba is one of my least favorites from ss, but it isn't bad and many love it.

I love both of these. Haven't had the SS nba in several months though. The Rogue hazelnut is phenomenal.
I haven't tried many new beer recently, although then the Propeller Menz PA. There is Halifax's first Beerfest in two weeks though!

dont feel you have to wait until 21. just because so many american kids cant drink responsibly doesnt mean you cant. if youre in no hurry, fine, wait, but i found a loophole. everywhere else in the world you can have a beer by 18, even younger.

So i assess your loophole is to travel to another country to drink? If so.. thats fucking lame.
Agreed about the responsibility comment.

Drinking Rogue - Dead Guy ale.
Very very fucking good. Absolutely no after taste. (thats worth mentioning negatively) Probably the smoothest beer i've drank in a very long time. It doesn't have a taste that absolutely bogs you down with its overbearingness, which is a good thing to me.
I must say this is an exceptional buy. 6 pack for 9.29.
I drank some sort of Flying dog last night that was absolutely repulsive to me. It was called In Heat wheat. It was a hefeweizen.

I've only had one Rogue Dead Guy Ale and it was on New Year's last year. Haven't been around the private stores that carry it. It is indeed an excellent session beer.

I want some Rogues...
I found Sierra Nevada Wheat for the first time in my local store. I was looking for Samuel Adams Honey Porter, I thought I saw a shit load of it there last time I went but not this time, only boston lager and white ale (which is the spring seasonal and has been sitting out for months now... I found a fucking six pack of Anchor Christmas 2006 sitting out on the unrefridgerated stacks, not to mention Newcastle clear bottles sitting out there too. nobody buys any of their craft beer apparently). I guess I will grab a $12 six pack of something tomorrow downtown at the real beer store.

i dont need beer, i mean from what i have had i have come to one conclusion and that is if you want to get drunk beer is fine, but since i don't want to get drunk i can beverages that are just as tasty if not better for much cheaper (aka, juice, soda, coffee).

A lot of us here will have a beer or two and not get drunk. Just like someone who will have a glass of wine with their meal.

If all you want is to get drunk, beer's expensive and makes you waste a lot of time pissing.
If you don't like beer, you don't like beer. All your arguments are going to get shot down because they're based on personal preference rather than logic but are presented as though they're logically sound. And that's just silly, because you don't need an argument for why you don't drink beer.

This is true. We got on the offensive because he assumed we are swill-guzzling hillbillies, rather than beer enthusiasts.

I was talking to him, BB, not to you. I'm saying that, unless he's honest about the fact that he's got an opinion and not a philosophical position, he's going to keep getting into fights here that he can't win, because he's both outnumbered and using the wrong tools.

i have bought more rogues...
i wonder if other D&D classes have beers. Plenty of monks, including the trappists. Druid Fluid is the only other one I know of.. found some localized ones on BA like Barbarian Bock, Wizard wheat, Thieving Bard Oatmeal Stout. If someone came up with a D&D based mix pack it would be great to sell at those geek-cons. just brainstorming and drinking...

Again, you still don't understand the original argument and its shutting out every word you have said.
If the only thing in life you want is juice, then drink fucking juice, but those of us who want a variety and substance to life we will drink what we can. You've already made it clear you want to limit your life based on naive assumptions and pretenses.
So it is cheaper? Whats your fucking point? That good things aren't worth paying for? It should be noted you can't compare the 2 because juice is for health while beer and alcohols are for RECREATION.
So it tastes bad the first time around? Wasn't all sorts of things you've tried the first or 2nd time? Vegetables various foods, virgins and oral sex and so on? This point should be obvious enough as it is.
Responding to your posts is like shooting a defenseless injured fawn that for some reason is fighting back instead of accepting its defeat.

What are you talkin about? sooooooooo sooooo good. I was killing like 2 back to back. Thats 2 guiness's and 2 shots of baileys. (we didn't have any jameson) It gets ya drunk, and tastes almost like chocolate milk.

I've only had one on St. Patrick's Day..and by then my taste buds and liver were completely expended.
I'm going to a specialty beer store soon..can't wait to see what they have.

bassist_of_light made the proper statement. It's no longer an argument when he says 'I'd rather drink this than this,' and once it's just a statement of preference there's not much you can say about it.
Which is to say, cut out the bullshit. There's no need to pile onto him once he's conceded that he shouldn't have made an argument in the form he did.
Car bombs are usually delicious. But woe unto him who orders one at a bar that doesn't have Baileys but serves it to him nonetheless, for down that road lies the wailing and the gnashing of teeth and the regions of sorrow where peace and rest can never dwell, hope never comes that comes to all, but torture without end.

^no fucking clue what your talking about, but it sounded flowery and thoughtful.
I drank Negro Especial last night. Pretty fucking good for a Mexican Lager, I must admit. This stuff actually has a distinct flavor, perfect for drinking durning hot ass summer days. I reached over 102 degrees in my back yard yesterday, and that was a nice way to cool off.

Lucky bastard!
Can't wait to see the pics.
Halifax's first true beer festival is on Saturday..I was hoping to go but now I probably won't because out of the 120 or so beer that are going to be there, there are only about 3-5 I haven't tried. Not worth the $30.

i'm back bitches! i've had a handful of new beers even though i shouldn't be drinking beer while trying to slim down.
sqol - that kicks ass..i didn't know they had american micro brews over there.
i'm actually drinking a rogue beer right now. chipotle ale.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...er/IMG_3114.jpg
hah yea, weird glass...all my glasses are in a box wrapped in bubble wrap or newspaper.
anyway..with this stuff i wasn't expecting much of a great beer. i love spicy food, and i love beer...i even love drinking beer while eating spicy food/peppers. but beer with peppers in the ingredients just seems strange. i had to try it though.
head retention is good with this stuff. i don't know if it's the house, my nose or what..but i am having trouble smelling this beer. very faint hoppy smell..not insane hops, just an average hop smell. it doesn't taste spicy..though i have a warped idea of what spicy is compared to many. average beer...much better than i expected. medium-light bodied. more of a hop flavor that anything else..but a backbone of malts to balance it out. honestly can't say i'm picking up any pepper flavor. a decent beer, but not one of my favorites from rogue. i would drink it again though.
other beers i've had recently are: bells (great brewery! try anything you can from them) amber ale, two hearted ale (double ipa), and oberon (summer ale)...all really good beers. i'm not crazy about amber ales, but this was a very tasty one. still hasn't converted me to loving amber ales, but that two hearted ale was damn good! the oberon was also really good as well.
had some clipper city heavy seas-peg leg imperial stout was good, but paled in comparison to other imperial stouts, lagunitas IPA: really good.. a solid IPA that you should try if you can (and like IPAs) i want to try their other beers..but it was the first time i had seen them..so i went with the good ol IPA.

it's about 90 degrees here at 10:30 PM and cold Samuel Adams Brown Ale is about the best thing I've ever drank. Brings back memories of the first beer I ever purchased, Newcastle.
I have Rogue mocha porters too. That's a beer that I like to drink at room temp. and right now it's too hot for that shit. Maybe tomorrow mid-day while the a/c is cranked up.

Then try Hertog Jan, Alfa or Brand. Grolsch is pretty standard man, the standard beers over here are Heinken, Amstel and Grolsch. They got it on tap everywhere, Hertog Jan is one step higher but still very common.
My favorite, for a daily drinker.

I love Heineken and Grolsch is pretty good. But I have never tried Amstel, is it quite good? Someone told me Oranjeboom is good too, what's that like in your opinion?

I poured out beer for the first time today... oh wait, no I didnt. it was a free Miller Lite. I poured out an alcoholic beverage on purpose for the first time today, on purpose that is (i've accidentaly poured some out maybe). I poured it up and it looked like urine.. smelled like bathwater and tasted like I mix a shot of Sierra Nevada Wheat and a pint of that bath. I sipped for a taste, drank, chugged half the glass and went to the sink man. Time for an A&W Root Beer to get the taste out of my mouth.
I figured I need to at least try a macro beer once in my life as long as I didnt pay for it.. I'm glad it's over.

Amstel is pretty much like Heineken but some like it better.
Oranjeboom is terrible, really terrible and it gives bad headaches, don't drink it. I think 90% of our population hates it. The 10% that drink it are locals from Breda that get it cheap

Thanks for the advice, I'll never try Oranjeboom
And I'll definately buy some Amstel when I see it.

The Halifax Seaport Beer Festival was today. I did not attend. Garrison(out of Halifax) unveiled a 6.5% American(west coast) styled IPA today however..and it's supposed to be a hop bomb. I can't wait to try some!

Odd, we had a beer festival today in celebration of the 50'th anniversary of Pacific Western Brewing (local brewery)
I'm going to be getting fit-shaced tonight I have a six-pack of Tuborg, a six-pack of Holsten 7% and a single small bottle of "Piratt"... the suff I got is 9%. I have no idea what it tastes like but I decided to try one because the bottle looked fucking cool lol.
But with the Tuborg and Holsten, it will be a very tasty, dizzy night

Cool, if you ever run into Hertog Jan, get that too. I think it's the best regular beer over here along with Dommelsch.

Beers I've recently tried:
Old Tom Barely Wine(England)
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3091/8038
Bateman's Victory Ale(England)
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/807/26012
Samuel Smith Imperial Stout(England)
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/113/782
The first two my friend's mother brought back from a Navy excursion stop-over in Scotland. I don't think they export to North America. Not too fond on barely wines, but the Victory ale are very good..extremely well balanced. I saw several months ago an episode of 'The Beer Hunter' where Michael Jackson visited the Bateman brewery and had quite long segment specifically on the Victory Ale.
Finally tried the SS RIS after the local private store having it in stock. We shared a bottle between 3 other friends the other night..two of them did like it so I had their servings. I quite enjoyed it.
