I have a GNX3 (going to sell it so I can buy a cab). I really like it and give you alot of flexablity with your tone. I would get the GNX3 instead of the 4 because its just as good just doesnt have all the fancy connections in the back. If your interested in buying it then PM me (probably wont sell it for a few more weeks).

AFAIK, the Boss GT-6 is highly regarded. Opeth uses it for their live sound (both effects and distortion and clean).

I've got a friend who owns a Korg AX1500G, and he's AFAIK very satisfied with it. I'd say a GT-6 is more versatile though. But that shows on the price tag...

I personally prefer rackmount stuff. Currently I'm using a Boss GX-700, and I'm very happy with it.

digitech whammy xp-100.... does, wah, whammy, detune, octaving, pitch shifting, harmonizing, volume, and has a built on tuner.... and it sounds better than those cheap gnx & rp style units that give you stuff you don't need.
they go for like $100-150 u$d used.

the ibanez cf7, it has a really good chorus, a really good flanger, and then a whack'd mode for each... it sounds great... i used to have one before i went rack. the whack'd mod is super for all sorts of ring mod type fx.....
but ibanez tonelok pedals suck batteries like whores suck cock... so you'd want a power supply.
i bought it for like $35 used but in mint condish.

akai headrush delay.... does everything delay/looping/echo-wise that you could possibly need... like 20+ seconds of delay... very flexible...
$100-ish used.

those three units could take care of tonz of fx you'd need... higher quality, better sounding, easier to use, and in the end porbably similar in cost than even a higher end ground multi fx unit.... put them in a compact/powered pedal board with your foot switch & stuff... and walla... no contest between that and a gnx3.

some versions are better though... the origional is the best imo as far as sound and feel, but the II and 4 are also great imo especially with more features... the xp-100 is great because it's like several quality units assigned to one expresion pedal(not mayn people use more than one expresion effect at a time) so it's by far the most versatile but not the best sounding, though it does sound great.... but the whammy type effects on those multi fx units suck ass...
