Output Transformer question
Greetings to my fellow tone junkies,
Great board, some extremely knowledgable people posting here. I was wondering if I could get a little help here. I recently sent my Marshall DSL50 head to a well known amp tech to have a replacement output transformer installed. (Mercury Magnetics MAR series). When I got the amp back I noticed that they had installed a 100 watt output transformer instead of the 50 watt listed on the Mercury Magnetics website. I called the amp tech back and asked him if he had worked on my amp personally. His reply was that he was gone that day and that one of his apprentices he is training had done the work. I then asked why they had installed a 100 watt OT on a 50 watt head. He told me that basically I got a more expensive OT for the price of a 50 watt and that it made no difference as far as tone or creating any problems with the amp as long as the OT is not rated for LESS than 50 watts. I have to confess that I am ignorant to how the OT actually works and the only reason I replaced it was that everyone says it makes a big difference on the DSL50. The only difference I can notice is that all of my treble is GONE. I have to dime the Treble and it still lacks any sparkle. So what is the real story with OT's and wattage ratings. I am worried. I believe this person to be very very honest BUT, I do not know him personally and at my meager wage I earn it took me almost two years to save and buy this head. Any one that could help me out, I would be thankful beyond all belief. I have been virtually unable to sleep for two nights worrying about this. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou.
