It's not a historically authenthic weapon if it's newly made. See if you would have bought some historic weapon and wanted to hang it on a wall, I would understand.

Nothing to do with fantasy metal, or role play for that matter.
For what do I want to perfect my cutting technique? Simply because I want to be a better martial artist. For what do we practice guitar playing? Because we want to be become better guitar players. 
What I meant by historically authentic was made in a historically authentic manner, adhering to age old design principles with blade geometry, balance, heat treatment, and type of steel taken into account. Basically, not a hunk of shitty steel.
Cost? £320. I price I gladly paid.
I wonder though, would you lavish the same amount of criticism on someone who bought himself a katana to perfect his technique in Japanese martial arts? |

Hmm, I live about a 5-10 minute drive from the Atlantic Ocean, in a city of over 360,000..not quite a fisherman's ghetto. However, there is a community called "Eastern Passage" which is right on the ocean kinda near the sticks and it is definitely a fisherman's ghetto. Lot's of poor, angry, drunken white folk..many whom still have irish/scottish accents even after hundreds of years of their relatives coming to Canada. Pretty fucked up.

I see it's not a hunk of shitty steel but I wonder what motivates you to spend that for a sword.
Like I said in the post before, it's not only taking the piss, I'm just completely amazed.
If you're into martial arts and you would buy a perfectly crafted Katana blade I would definetly understand, since it's your 'sport' and you're willing to pay for a good product.
But you're more into it as a collectors item right? Or is there seriously a sport where they wield blades like this? (I can see a guy sporting a mace as well in that club!) |

My purchase of a longsword to perfect European martial arts techniques is the equivalent of someone purchasing a katana to perfect Japanese martial arts techniques. What you fail to realise is just as there are Japanese systems of historical fencing, there are European systems as well.
I purchased the sword both as an item of use and a item of beauty, just as a Japanese swordsman would revere his katana as an item which helps him perfect his art and as an item of beauty.
You seem to think that just because katanas are Japanese and "mystical", it legitimises people practicing with them. When I mentioned I purchased a longsword, you were quick to imagine me as some LARPing, fantasy-obsessed freak. |

I know there are european systems of historical fencing but I couldn't imagine there would be any competition in it.
As with Asian systems where people still compete. Kendo is very big over here. I've seen a Jitsuka/Kendo demontration once and it was pretty cool, ofcourse they didn't use real Katana's but those wooden practise things.

Yeah, I can get pissed off when it comes to such discussion. Mainly because the same pattern gets repeated most of the time I mention an interest in European swords and martial arts to people, and it's just draining explaining the same things over and over.
Kendo isn't really comparable to what I do. Kendo is much more sport than martial art, and they don't really practice with steel weapons. Closer to what I do is kenjutsu, which is basically katana martial arts. Of course that comparison isn't complete either, since along with practicing techniques and test cutting, I spar on a regular basis. Test cutting/practicing is beneficial to competition, which is a much better word to use than sport, which implies a lack of martial technique.
I personally don't see the value in designer clothing, and I could make the same argument you initially made, when you thought I only bought the sword for the "cool" factor.
It's all about personal taste anyway. Which is why there are people in this world who collect dildos based on their aesthetic value. |

Yup. But it's good to know your motivations, thanks for elaborating on the subject. It's allways about personal taste but the subject of weaponry is pretty interesting.
I did Aikido for four years but other sports took more time and I quit at a pretty early age. Bad choice, you pick it up much easier when you're young. same applies for guitar etc.. Now I don't have time to do another sport next to my weekly scedule, if it would be possible I would love to pick up Shinto Ryu. (the oldest Japanese fencing tradition)

Some older model Celica's have toyota 3S-GTE twin turbo engines. My toyota MR2 has the same engine. They are sleeper racers. The engines are rare but are easy to tweek up to 500 HP with little cost. Its the same engine the Toyota Supra GT was equiped with. |

Sadly, that's a national park and not something widespread. Australia logs faster than any other first-world country, ancient forests in Tasmania are being turned into wood chip etc etc. I live in the drab middle-class suburbs of a state capital (the nearest patch of relatively dry rainforest being 20 minutes away), but me and Mr BC are looking at moving out into the country, not too far from where those pictures were taken.
