When I got my ES 335 I thought it was expensive at $450 with a $50 case, but it's appreciated to the price similar to those. I had no idea of it's worth and before Bob started playing I was going to pawn it right before Christmas one year to see if I could get $50 or $100 for it. lol Something told me not to though. I think it was God.
If you can find a really great guitar now and take care of it and hang onto it, it would be an excellent investment. Those are going to be worth a small fortune to your grandkids and be a part of history, too.

My guitar teacher taught me to use this stuff like this:
Take a very fine piece of steel wool (0000) and gently rub it in one direction on the fretboard (to get oxidation off and such and to "expand" the "pores" in the wood). Then use a sponge and spray the oil onto it and lather it onto the fretboard. Then wait until its all absorbed and reapply (of course based on how "thirsty" the wood is). Wait until the fretboard almost stops absorbing the oil then apply a very very light film of the oil and leave it somewhere for a few hours.
I've done this twice and my fretboard has been darker, and has had a very nice sheen to it...not to mention very smooth to play on. Its a very different process than other oil products I've used (the steel wool part had me nervous) but the results are great. |

That looks like my expression when I laid eyes on that G'. I was 17 at the time. That's beautiful.
Maybe you should go to the guitar forum and tell those people how and what to use on their guitars so they'll quit using Pledge and Murphy's oil soap on them. That was giving me the willies thinking about it. Oil will darken the wood somewhat, but it will preserve it well.
I think the trick to using the steel wool is to make sure it's very fine so it's just getting the gunk off without taking off any finish.

Well I did it once about 5 or so months ago and once today. You actually don't use that much because its very "lubricant" if you will. 1 spray easily covers the fretboard for 2 applications or so. |

It sounds really good as long as I'm not the one playing it. I was told that mine has the old style finish on it, too.
The cleaning and conditioning routine sounds a lot like what you do with fine wood furniture, too. maybe not the steel wool part because it shouldn't get all the handling that a guitar neck would, but as far as oiling it.

I sold the explorer, but now regret it since my mockingbird and ESP viper do not work right now. I am never letting someone else other than a skilled musician handle my guitars again.
I once watched some dumbass(former friend you could say) totally fuck the floyd on that thing up. It is liscenced so not a worthy floyd but even so, you don't try to see if the whammy bar can touch the pickups while just hitting random notes. I hate idiots. (idiots by definition are people with an iq of lower than 70, mine doubles that then some.)

DAMMIT! You should have stopped him right away. Trems ( or at least most trems ) can handle doing that, but rocking back and forward on it like a retard Something is going to break. I dive mine to the body often but it is easier to do with a Kahler then a Floyd. I think a Floyd would wear out fast doing that. |
