Alex Webster
What do you guys think of Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse? I think he is a fucking amazing bassist and I defy anyone to say he sucks. Did any of you see him playing on The Wretched Spawn DVD. Holly fuck he's just unbelivable.

vic's not metal.
I've never actually listened to the dudes bass.
But honestly as a bassist, i find "metal bassists" to be the worst. But hey I'll check him out. Prove me wrong

hes a master in finger style bass fretted bass. Most bassists ive met only play pick... but hes just really fast, really technical, and creates inventive basslines.

Reguardless of the giant genre gap between the two, Les Claypool is infinitely better than him.
I don't find his playing to be anything special. But then again the only bassist that actually shows any kind of skill is of course, Les Claypool. Sorry, I like les.

Alex is god
I seen him play with CC at Wacken this year
Unfortunately they couldnt play Hammer Smashed Face because its banned in Germany so I didnt get to hear the bass at the start which I love so much
As someone said, Steve Digiorgio is also amazing. I think Alex excels at rhythm and generally being able to play any riff (you try playing Dead Human Collection accurately and fast!) that CC write, Digiorgio is more melodic and his work on The Fragile Art of Existence (Control Denied) shows that.

Stay away from more recent CC. They gave up sounding good for being technical. The bass work is still good though.
Their first four albums are the only ones truly worth listening to, but that is just me, tatter3d.

It is definetly, just you.
Theyre newer albums are great. Just maybe not as good as the first 4 but good nonetheless. One of my favorite songs is 'Frantic Disembowelment' and thats off their most recent album.

Their first four albums were the most original, IMO. This is obviously an opinion thing, but... Just leave it at that.

they were one of the first death metal bands.. kinda hard not to be original when no ones playing the same music you are.

I was talking to Wbster afte r a show and he said he was going to have a bass solo on the last album he didnt think it was good enough. Now by bass solo i mean a whole track not just fills. He said maybe next album. He also mentioned comming out with an instuctional video with Derek Roddy.

Well fuck my arse, I agree.
By the way, there were many death metal bands around before Cannibal Corpse. MANY. Possessed, being first. Bolt Thrower, Pestilence, Autopsy, Asphyx, Death, Celtic Frost, Sepultura (death/thrash), etc. The majority of those bands preceed Cannibal Corpse by a good 5 years - and most had released 2, 3, or even 4+ albums before Cannibal Corpse had even formed. So actually, plenty of bands were playing the music they were. They may be one of the most influential death metal bands ever, but certainly not one of the first.

Sepultura death metal???
What im saying is CC was defnetly one of the first to gain popularity and bring more exposure to the genre.

Yes. Death had 3 albums and countless demos out before CC even had ONE demo. Possessed had at least two to my knowledge.
But CC influenced every death metal act that followed.

Keep in mind, you people talking about when CC formed, that they're from Buffalo, NY. Anyone who's ever been to Buffalo might be aware of the fact that it sucks royally and is not a hotbed for anything. The fact that five talented, death metal-oriented musicians came together and formed a band, a good band, in that artistic climate is absolutely mind-boggling. You could say the same thing for Sepultura, but I don't think they really had much trouble finding each other. Anyway, I'm just saying: it's easier to form band in a place like Florida at the time, where everyone was racing headfirst to deathmetaldom, but Buffalo? That would take some time.
And for Dissection (and no, this is not about the CC comment, as that's a matter of taste): Do you honestly think that Les is the only person to show his skill on the bass? I agree that he's better than Webster, and most bassists of his generation, but that's absolutely nuts. I mean, when DiGorgio toured with Testament he played their guitar solos. If you're having trouble finding good bassists, the band Gov't Mule was kind enough, when their bassist died, to record two albums full up with probably the best bassists living - with the strange exception of Geddy Lee - called The Deep End Vols 1 & 2. If you can't find somebody else to impress you there, well, you're not likely to find somebody. And, of course, Les is invovled. There's actually a companion documentary, called Rising Low, that explains the making of the record, the reason behind it, and does a lot of exploration into bass playing. Good stuff.
And I like Alex Webster.

Alex Webster is the most insane bassist in the whole fucking planet. He is my fucking god! Me and Cannibal saw CC and met Alex after a show...we even got pictures with Alex, and Pat's Signature! Anyone who says Alex sucks shall be killed in one of the following ways- burnt alive, executed personally by Alex, or just shot by a CC lover.

Alex Webster is an AMAZING bass player, but he is not the best. Victor Wooten (already mentioned) is fucking insane. What other bass players do you know of to play the star-spangled banner with just harmonics!!!!! That should speak for itself. Alex is most impressive though because he doesn't use a pick....and because his hands are 3/4 spiders.

Alex Webster
Check out the wreched spawn, get the copy with the free dvd and watch the recording of frantic disembowelment (i dare anyone to accuratly do a bass tab for it). alex is more amazing to see then to hear. his bass solos are good but they are not the best, but when you see him play its totaly tits.
And Posessed were around before cc or anyother death band, They were the FIRST death band anb many belive they invented the phrase Death Metal, i sugest and death metaler to buy seven churches. and death came befor cc aswell.
any hoo i shall go before i start to ramble.

yea possessed was the first. i have seven churches its no the best album ever but its one of those metal "classic" ablums, if i remember right they had a song on there named death metal so that might be where the prase came from.
i dont think there is a version of the wretches spawn without the dvd, when i saw it thought i was like

Don't get too excited over Alex Webster before you get a chance to hear him. He's good, but a lot of people go on about him like he's got Jaco in his pocket blessing his right hand. A lot of it comes from his being basically the only fingerstyle bassist death metal fans know, which is very impressive but doesn't actually make him better than some bassists who use a pick. There's a reason he's more impressive to watch than to listen to: when you listen you aren't forced to see his right hand wiggle away and have to focus on what's being played.
I'm by no means trying to say he's not a very good bassist. I just think there's a tendency to give him too much credit and a consensus to forget that bass playing is more than right-hand technique, which he's got in spades.

Stefan Fimmers (Necrophagist) plays far more crazy shit than CC on bass and also uses his fingers. Now that guy has right-hand technique.
Nevertheless, go Webster he is quite a champ.

The whole thing about alex being so good isnt because he has a fast right hand, many many death metal bassists use their fingers. he is good because he is good at all aspects of playing and if you had watched the wreched spawn dvd u would know that.
he slaps and taps like a muther fucker in that dvd, Ok so he's no stu hamm or jaco but they play different music to what he does.

dude i heard that jaco guy but in the dvd he does talk about learning jazz and other styles to help incorperat into his death metal playing, which is a good thing if you only play and listen to metal 24/7 you will get stale

I've seen that DVD and still stand by anything I said. I wasn't actually comparing him to Stu Hamm or Jaco Pastorius so much as to other death metal bassists, who get very little credit despite being on a similar level.
Like I said, I'm not trying to bag on Alex Webster so much as to make sure the description of him's more balanced, and to point out that there are a lot of other great death metal bassists who just haven't had the exposure, or a Wretched Spawn DVD of their own.

You mean "the kindest of all DM Bassists?
I'm kidding, you mean "king", I know.
I really like some of the basslines on "The Bleeding", especially the track title.

Why? Because when you need songs like "I Cum Blood" and "Addicted to Vaginal Skin" to get attention, your quite pathetic.

Its nice to express yourself, but seriously Tulvox if you've got nothing nice to say, then dont say anything at all. saying CC sucks is just going to kick off a big argument, and i dont want that in this thread or forum.
Thankyou.

honestly i think people give claypool to much credit. he is godly at the bass, no doubt, but, THERE ARE BETTER BASSIST'S OUT THERE.

Alex is by far one of the most well-respected and most talented bassists in the whole death metal genre. I had the pleasure of getting to know Alex for a while, and he was very happy to sit down with me and show me how he does some of the tapping techniques that he excels at. He also told me how he got to be that good...by watching lots of instructional videos, as someone else pointed out, that are not strictly metal, and practising like a mad man.
One of the main things that make Alex such an impressive bassist, is that he is pretty well the main writer for Cannibal Corpse. Look at the writing credits on almost all the CD's...
His 3-fingered playing technique is amazing to watch, aswell. He back-picks with his index finger to fill it out to what lots of people assume is a 4-fingered playing technique. (As far as I know, the only bassists out there playing with all 4 fingers are Jason Blackowitz from Divine Empire (ex-Malevolent Creation) and...well...me!)
But listen to Mummified in Barbed Wire for some of his amazing 2-handed tapping...it's mind-numbing.

Man, Alex Webster's style is SO hard to learn, the left hand speed isnt the issue, it's that fucking 3 finger plucking man, holy shit I wish he had an instructional video out there somewhere that would help or maybe he does, anyone know if he's ever made one or ever will?

Well, Steve DiGorgio (who also uses 3 fingers) has an instructional section on his website. It teaches you how he learned to play 3 finger and if you're feeling ambtitious learning 4 fingers is essentially the same thing (though it may take longer to learn).
http://www.stevedigiorgio.com/tablature.html
It's the last one: 'Beginning Bass - Column'.

Yeah I checked their site out, he said he probably will get started on making an instructional video, I cant wait for that one there arent many good bass instructional videos out there, nevermind metal ones, so I'm quite looking forward to it apparently he's a really nice guy too so I'm sure the video will be really good.

This thread is stupid...........
ALEX WEBSTER IS BY FAR THE GREATEST BASS PLAYER EVER!!!!!!!!
EVERYONE KNOWS THAT!!!!!!!
I have the bass solo from the dvd recorded on my phone as my ring tone. The one that's about 25 seconds long. After he says something aout incorparating different styles to have more variation in death metal.

Corpse in studio
Heres for all you Alex Webster fans out there, or Cannibal Corpse fans in general. CC recording "Frantic Disembowelment" in the studio, check out websters technique.....in-fucking-sane! It's a 15 MB download so it might take awhile if you arent using high-speed.
Download it here : http://www.savefile.com/files/3436381
Cheers
(by the way, it's an AVI file...so you might need DIVX to play it, I'm not sure)

That came out of no-where? are you relating to Alex webster? if so explain more..
Another look at it, a bass player could be turned down in the mix of the PA, bad micing, shit cab.. etc..

this is going to sound pretty out of place too, but if you want to learn a good excersise for 3 finger style like that check out Spanish Romance. Great Flamenco tune thats just one long 3 string arpeggio progression.

How the hell is the bassplayer a pussy if you can`t hear him live? It`s probably not his fault, but rather the sound guy.
