On the bus today I listened to:

Souls To Deny - Suffocation

This album keeps growing and growing on me to the point that I completely love it. I think it has a slightly better drum production than Pierced From Within but the guitar side of things is somewhat lacking when compared with the same album, they seem quite low in the mix. Anyway, it's a fantastic album and I'm so glad that Suffo are back.

Revelations - Vader

The Slayer of death metal! It gets a little repetitive at times - especially Peter's soloing - but it's not a bad listen at all. It's no surprise how the production is almost exactly the same as Decapitated's Nihility, largely due to Peter at the helm of both projects.

Depopulate - Vile

Very good stuff indeed, reminding me of Origin at times. Of course, Origin have better drumming courtesy of the mighty John Longstreth but I feel that Vile have the edge in the riffage department by a gnat's wing.

And Then You'll Beg - Cryptopsy

I don't need to champion this album to people who know and love Cryptopsy. Quite simply a behemoth of an album, it's monstrous in almost every aspect that you can think of. Only a lacklustre vocal performance offers any sort of denegration but I've long since noticed them due to Jon Lavasseur's incredibly spastic riffage and perfect soloing. Cryptopsy's best album. Simply Essential.

call me weak, but that Auf Der Maur cd has been in my cd player for a while today and its pretty relaxing.

Vital Remains- Dechristianize

One of those cd's that are brutal chaos for about half the song, and then the lead guitar comes in and creates incredible moments. I really like this guitarist's use of the harmonic minor scale (or at least that's what I think he is using). Great album that grows on you.

Whisper Supremacy - Cryptopsy

I often overlook (somewhat criminally) this album in favour of And Then You'll Beg and None So Vile but it is the perfect bridge between these two albums. This is the album where Cryptopsy first experimented with more complex structures and riffs and I still feel that they were finding their feet at this point, but none-the-less it's still a great album by anyone's standards. This goes to show how highly I regard And Then You'll Beg.

Nihility - Decapitated

This is my favourite Decapitated album. A good mixture of slow and fast paced songs to give a varied album. My only gripe is that when I listen to it I always feel that there is more to come from them and I'm not sure whether The Negation was the perfect follow up that it should have been. But if one ignores what they might evolve into then this is still a damn good album.

Dechristianize - Vital Remains

I love this album! It has ferocious blasting (although rumours abound that this was down to slick pro-tools manipulation rather than skill) and amazing, classically inspired solos and leads from the erstwhile Mr Suzuki. He (ahem) motors through this album like a man possessed and the only respite from the aural assault are the frequent melodic passages that intertwine this recording. Excellent from start to finish.

Chronozon - Akercocke

My album of 2003, Chronozon is more coherent than previous Akercocke offerings and is quite simply a journey that everybody should undertake at least once in their lives. A fantastic blend of black and death metal with interspersed ambient instrumentals, this album will leave you wondering how the Hell BM and DM fans don't get on. The album is chock full of outstanding performances, but specific mention has to go to Jason Mendonca who delivers one of the most versatile vocal performances of the last 10 years. Mendonca sums up Akercocke, and subsequently Chronozon, perfectly: they cover all the bases, and in style.
