Sorry. Love that bass line.
Agalloch is usually in my CD player. Also all three of the Winds albums. I'm more into Doom/Folk stuff at the moment than anything else. I seem to be the minority so far in this thread.

I've played Testament's Practice What You Preach twice today and Souls of Black once. I also played along with Slayer's Reign in Blood and South of Heaven, but I think I skipped a couple of tracks.

morbid angel - gateways to annihilation
fear factory - archetype
dream theater - train of thought
testament - demonic
chimaira - impossibility of reason
sonata artica - ecliptica
cradle of filth - nymphetamine
my dying bride - light at the end of the world
ya i know its alot but those are the heavy rotation in my car and when i'm at work, a few of the more "vulgar" ones being skipped at work tho cause i have to play it over the stores speaker system

What did you think of Oceanic john? I found it a bit monotonic... if that's a word. I had to force myself not to change the album
EDIT: monotonous, that's the one.

I really like it. I was only listening to it really because I saw Hopkins' tab for Carry and it reminded me of how good the album is. I like the long passages of instrumentation, I find them quite soothing.

Yes, melodic death is much better than brutal death, IMO. Although I'm not the person you see blasting death metal all the time (rarely, to be honest), I still enjoy even the most brutal of stuff.
Again I say, I'm beginning to think I'm a minority on here when it comes to music... I'm not sure if there is anything wrong with that either.

I'll give descriptions, just incase no-one knows who the hell I'm on about. And hey, it might convince some of you slackers to buy their shit. Oh, and I'm bored.
The Dillenger Escape Plan - "Miss Machine". First time I've actually had a decent listen to these guys, I must admit - not too bad. Not exactly my kind of music, but it is fun to listen to - and you HAVE to appreciate the musicianship.
Terminally, Your Aborted Ghost - "The Art of Suicide as Self-Expression". Great fucking demo. Chaotic death/grind stuff, reminiscent of DEP in some aspects, but not quite as crazy. Intestine-shittingly brutal stuff, with some fucking MASSIVE breakdowns. Can't wait for their full-length. They are only 18, too.
Deprecated - "Deriding His Creation". All-star line-up on this MCD, Matt Soleto on guitar (in Decrepit Birth), Derek Boyer on bass (Suffocation, Vital Remains, Decrepit Birth.. the list goes on), AJ Magana on vocals (Disgorge - on Consume the Forsaken), John Chavez on 2nd guitar (Vehemence) and some random dude on drums. Total Suffocation worship. Lovely shit. Funny how they all went on to bigger & better things..

Have you heard Calculating Infinity yet, Jarrod? The musicianship is so much more extravagant than on Miss Machine - not to say that makes it better than MM per se, but it is hyper-technical in comparison. Miss Machine is pretty good but it's not really worth trying to compare it to Calculating Infinity because they are two very different beasts. I can certainly recommend seeing them in the live setting if they ever get their arses down to Oz - very impressive.
I think from now on we (myself included) need to make longer posts with some sort of explaination a la Nihilist - it gets discussion going and it can be good for getting to know new bands. This thread is much better than the Now Playing thread and has the potential to be a source of much knowledge.

No, I haven't actually heard Calculating Infinity. I'll definitely buy it now, though (ordering as we speak, actually..). I'm impressed by MM. I did actually have the opportunity to see them, they came a few months back. Pity I was broke at the time. By the way, I realize I made a typo in the band name, but it is too late to fix it now you have quoted me. Damn you.
I figured I'd be ignored for posting lengthy descriptions. But the idea is all there, I'm encourging it. Of course, we don't need explanations for stuff like.. Opeth, or Slayer. Use some common sense, please. We'll see how it goes, and I do agree with John - it is much better than the Now Playing thread. GO NUTS!

I like Calculating Infinity more than Miss Machine,
mainly cause MM sounds more focused and not as chaotic
as CI.
Now I am listening mostly to Canvas - Lost In Rock.
It's got elements from many kinds of music(I think
they are like DEP(if they were English) in a way).
Their main influnces are hardcore,
doom,rock(notice how bad I am
at describing things).Great stuff!

All you ever listen to is Nile. What pisses me off is that I went to see Nile on their "...Shrines" tour, and got a shirt. A few months later, fucking hot topic starts carrying the same shirt.
I've listened to nothing but Agalloch on the bus lately. Go figure.

Images of Violence - "Cadaverous Recomposition". Great new band from Texas. The famous Jon Zig does vocals! For those of you unaware, he's probably done the artwork for most of the (metal) CD's you own. Steven from Sect of Execration does guitars/back-up vocals as well. They kind of sound like the Utopia Banished-era Napalm Death, with traces of the classic Texas Death Metal style (Devourment, etc). They even do a Napalm Death cover, fancy that. Awesome CD.
Pig Destroyer - "Terrifyer". This is one band I don't get the hype about. Sub-par grindcore. Few decent songs, this one isn't really worth grabbing unless you're a true grind fanatic. Bordering hardcore, because of the vocals.
Pustulated - "Inherited Cryptorchidism". One of the most brutal things you will ever hear. The drumming is insane, features Chad Walls (ex-Brodequin). They use classical music pieces as samples every now and then. The vocals, are of course, stupidly low. A good slab of non-stop blasting death metal. Bizarre album, great nonetheless.

I've heard a bit about these guys. I read on the Nile forum that Chad Walls triggers his kit and plays bass drum rolls on his snare (when in the studio). Very strange indeed!
Oh, I didn't even notice the spelling mistake myself! I'd edit my post but since we've talked about it in posts since, it's a pointless exercise really.
Back to the current album thingy:
Still Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren Ka I'm afraid, Dissection! I used to think the production was bad on this album but with repeated (and repeated!) listens it is quite good actually. In comparison to Black Seeds anyway. Nile rule.

Captain Cleanoff - Self Titled
A nice rocky grind album, since they arnt trying to be "ultra-brutal" (e.g. Mortician) the riffs have lots of interesting variation, the only let down is thats it only 14 minutes
Leng Thc'e - Death by 1000 cuts
This is a lot more harsh than the aformensioned one, it has distortion that is on the verge of making my ears bleed, though it still has "rocky" riffs. The vocalist does a variety of different vocal stlyes (from low to high) and sings about interesting things (e.g. how Kid Rock is a faggot, Serial Killer horror movies suck, stupid hXc kids who intentionally hurt people in "mosh pits") all up a nice album.
The Day Everything Became Nothing - Le Morte
This is one of the best grind albums i have ever herd, its blow your load all over the inside of your pants stuff. Imagine Cock & Ball Torture, but faster (i.e. less boaring) and thats basically what this album is, if you havent listened to it allready then you are just missing out.
is that a good enough little text analysis Nihilist?

Good stuff, BoC.
I'm not listening to anything at the moment but the last album I was listening to was Unholy Cult by Immolation. If anybody has to ask about these guys then they truly are an ignoramus of the highest order, maybe even deserving of their own little medal.

Libido Airbag - "Miss Melenoma". I think I'm acquiring a taste for weird metal.. these guys are self-proclaimed "techno industrial porn grind". Go figure. I can't quite comprehend what is going on at the moment, as it is 7 am. Silly Germans.
Mortal Decay - "A Gathering of Human Artifacts". Quite simply, a masterpiece. This is Mortal Decay's compilation of demos, ranging from 1991-1995. They have odd riffs that I can't quite understand, fusion-like bass runs, and the solos are extremely eerie. Brings forth a great atmosphere. And.. the vocals. To put it bluntly: the best death metal vocals I have EVER heard. Lower than Matti Way (Disgorge, Cinerary). What is even better, is that John Paoline was doing these in 1990. He sounds even better now. Get this, if you can find it. If not, get "Forensic" (2002). They have progressed marvellously, and are (big call..) easily the best band on Unique Leader I think.

Children Of Bodom - Live In Ilosarri Rock -- Mediocre quality, but good none the less, excellent clarity on the solos and shredding. Less keyboards, more solos. Less clarity on the vocals, nice distortion. goes for 30 minutes.
Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn -- Amazing album, some of the most beautiful music i've heard in a long time. Shredding, sweeping, and a lot more stuff that i don't know the name of

Devolved - "Calculated". Thanks to BoC for letting me leech this from him. I've listened to it about 3 times over now, and it is mighty impressive. Quite reminiscent of Meshuggah - the random tempo changes are astounding. Mix early Fear Factory with Meshuggah's new EP, add death metal vocals, with better drumming. You have Devolved. It also has a great rendition of Metallica's 'Battery'. Excellent. A+ to the production too.
Deeds of Flesh - "Inbreeding The Anthropophagi". No explanation needed. Pioneers of the Cali-brutal death scene. Outstanding.

Heaven Shall Burn - Antigone
great metalcore from germany, one of the more technical bands, been into it all this week.
DEP - Miss Machine
well, another DEP cd, another legendary cd too if I might add, good shit, I'm really getting into this, mathematical precision, patton-style vocals/presence on stage and good guitar work, love this shit.
Unearth - the oncoming storm
metalcore at its best, melodic and ballsy, IMO not as good as their other cds but I'm not into this cd too much yet, had it for a while but started listening to it again yesterday. I guess I have to listen to it some more...

It Dies Today - The Caitiff Choir
Metalcore at its finest. decently technical, lots of double bass, intense breakdowns. not many solos, sadly. good screaming / growling, and occasionally even some deep vox, death metal style. good singing too, all done by the same guy. the guys look like fags, but it doesnt detract from the music.

On the bus today I listened to:
Severed Savior - Brutality Is Law.
This is a fucking amazing album and anybody who follows the death metal scene should own this album. Pristine production and a killer guitar combine magnificently with some of the best riffs this side of a Suffocation album. From start to finish, this is a razorwire-wrapped masterpiece.
Spawn Of Possession - Cabinet
Cabinet is a strange title for a death metal album but don't let that deceive you, this album isn't the slightest bit wooden or fabricated. Excellent musicianship and an ear for technical melody make it a must own for fans of the Scandinavian DM scene.

Great albums, those 2!
I actually just turned off Severed Savior - Forced To Bleed. This album has a heavier guitar tone, but obviously, they have sacrificed clarity for it. My favourite Severed Savior track is on it though.. "Fecalpheliac". Brutal stuff. They are as technical as ever on this album, however. I believe Jared Deaver (ex-Deeds of Flesh/Impaled) did some guitar tracks for it.

I'm going to invest in Forced To Bleed very soon - Severed Savior are rising up my favourite bands list at a fair rate of knots.

Zao - The Funeral of God
pretty much entirely hardcore in my opinion, although some would argue that it is metalcore. vocals annoy me at times, and the music is sometimes bland, but i always find myself listening to it. mostly heavy for the sake of being heavy, there are open palm muted power chords and double bass everywhere. the instrumental at the end is amazing in a way i cant explain. i just like it

Hmm.. i think you have to be a bassist to truly appreciate primus, there music is just so different and original, and some of it is just really funny, in a appreciative way, very interesting bass work..

Today, I've been listening to:
Under A Stone With No Inscription - Anata
If you haven't heard of these guys I can strongly recommend them. They are members of the Scandinavian technical death metal scene and are by no means a bad exponent of said genre. In fact they reside in the upper echelons along with Spawn Of Possession. There are a couple of similarities with SoP, but for the main I think Anata just edge it due to a slightly more energetic sound.
Anata are masters of the sort of technical melody that one can't help but remark, "How can those two guitar lines possibly combine to make a melody?" But they do, and how! Anata use their twin guitar attack to perfection and the drumming is right up there with anything you care to mention. I've seen these guys live and I can vouch that they are tighter than your baby sister's snatch. Go check them out.
Trading Pieces - Deeds Of Flesh
Well, this one doesn't need that much explaining. Brutal death metal that pierces from within at every twist and turn. This particular album would benfit from improved production (I own the re-mastered version, so God only knows what the original's production was like!) but the riffs are there non-the-less. Corruscating and gutteral, this album will sand you faceless and still leave you begging for more.

Love it.
By the way - the original version isn't too different, production wise. These re-releases are just a desperate attempt to cash in a little more. The drums are clear, that is about it. But they are triggered, who the fuck cares? Triggered kits are always loud.
Reduced to Ashes is just ahead in the "best Deeds of Flesh album" stakes for me. The production is stellar, but suffers slightly in the repetition department. The song-writing has vastly improved!
We should do reviews.
