if by "difficult to press down on the string" you mean that the action has gotten high, then it could as well be a warpage in the neck...try lowering the bridge as your friend suggests

My piece of shit Squier did that. All shitty starter package guitars are bound to have neck problems. Its a proven fact.

But yes, talk to your instructor. And harder to press down might be a GOOD thing; it'll build finger strength.

Yeah the action does make a big difference, if its high anyways try playing it like that for a while to strengthin your fingers.

See?

I wish I had practiced more on my Squier before I got my Ibanez (I still have it but... why order burgers when you've got steak at home. Hehe)

...Because burgers kick ass and steak is for suburbanite blowhards who trick themselves into thinking that steak tastes better than burgers because it's more expensive. Of course, you ARE right, Ibanez tastes, er, PLAYS way better than Squiers.

In all seriousness, I have had this problem with my Squier several times, but I could never really fix it right because I lost the little Allen wrench that came with the guitar and is necessary to adjust the neck. Instead what I did is cram shitloads of junk underneath the bridge like a packrat in order to make it higher. It worked, but I would never play it in public. I have pictures if you want to see what I did, but you really should only do this as a last resort-

the neck is probably bowing. Youll probably need to tighten the truss rod.
