lots of mids lots of treble not much bass.
i think itd be hard to get a tone as reedy and paper thin as the filosofem sound though! great album, good taste in music man

its probably a combination of the settings, amp, mic used to record and maybe even the place recorded at

a big part of the tone on filosofem could very well have been the mics used. i know he purposely used the worst mic in the studio to record vocals, maybe its the same with the amp too.

yeah I'd say mic has a lot to do with it. I have some old shitty mic that I use to record with and it gave me a lot of bass. I bought a new one and it gives me more tremble or even an balanced sound.

I don't know if this has nothing to do with anything, but many other bands has that same guitar distortion as Burzum has on Filosofem, like Darkthrone on Under A Funeral Moon, Emperor on Wrath of the Tyrant, Abyssic Hate on Suicidal Emotions etc.. So I don't think that it would be about the mics (all would use bad mics to get that distortion?), yet I do think that it would be done from some 'not so technologically advanced' pedals/amplifiers. Because none of the amps which I have seen nowadays doesn't have that style of distortion, and reason for that would be because those kind of distortions are not so popular in music/metal (I think?). But I could easily be wrong, cause I don't often try many different devices at store. Though some digital mastering could do something nowadays, but Varg wasn't so rich back on 93, when he recorded Filosofem that he even could imagine of using it, same goes to the case of Darkthrone and Emperor. Abyssic Hate could be a different thing, because they released "Suicidal Emotions" at 2000.

i read that Darkthrone spent a good bit of time trying to get the sound they wanted on Under a Funeral Moon. In the studio, that is.
But as a side note, my old Peavey Renown 400 210W 2x12 combo (speaking of 'not so technologically advanced' pedals/amplifiers you wont find a better 210W SS effects-launching-platform for 150 bucks used though) has a mid frequency Shift knob on the clean channel, if I use a distortion pedal and turn that knob to the right and scoop out all traces of Mids on my amp and pedal, it gives me a good Under a Funeral Moon buzz guitar sound. if you happen to have a similar knob try that.

my favorite part about filosofem is how the guitars and vocals are so thin but the drums have a pretty big and dry sound and the keyboards are clear and bassy

Have anyone heard the Ulver's Nattens Madrigal? Though its guitar distortion is damn unique, it is bit same style as these razor sharp distortions on Filosofem, but it's same time somehow heavy and hard sound. One of the best distortions on metal music which I have heard.

Yeah ,filosofem has a really thin part of drums ,but the best thing 4 me is that that album creates a real dark ambient with that kind of sound and with all those melodies ,and if u read the erblicket die tochter firmaments lyrics u start thinking how deep are those words .

Great album but every time I hear it
it seems the guitars are trying to make my ears bleed.
On the other hand this kind of distortion fits
with that kind of blackmetal.
