G Tunning
I was learning some Mortician songs today. Off of Darkest Day of Horror to be exact and I noticed they changed their tunning for the album. The usually play in standerd A but on the one they play in G# and Gb. I don't know if I should tune my guitar that low. Have any of you guys ever played in this tunning before and I was wondering what's it sound like and what do you think of it?

Check out the Nile official website's "Musicians Forum", there's a thread where it's all explained. (Nile play in Drop-A)

For tunings like that it makes sence to just get a 7 string guitar. Or an 8 string.

Well Mortician plays on a regular 6 string. Roger uses a B.C. Rich Bich for the A tunning and a B.C. Rich Warlock for the G tunning. The 7 string might be a good idea. I'll try it out on my old shitty Ibanez guitar and see how it is.

Do you mean easier to tune or easier to play?

Easier to tune. 7 strings can get akward if your used to 6 stringers.

G is an absurd tuning, ive never played that before, lowest ive done in B. I think it shoud work w/ size .13 guitar strings, just REALLY lower the action.
Yah know what though? As long as you use the right frets, ive noticed that it still has a good resemblense, when you do cover songs you dont even have to play it the exact same way they do.

just tune to standard and capo the 3rd fret, it just will sound higher, but shit, its much simpler then trying to fuck your guitar into playing that low.

obrien brings up a very valid point as did cannibalcorpse.
Fuck Mortician, and if you want to tune that low just get a 7 string.
Why fuck up a guitar for Mortician anyways?

After years of toying around with tunings...13's seem to be the best deal for G and A tuning, etc. I like Mortician, though they're not my favorite, but I like most of the tunes due to the heaviness, blinding speed. I only wish their tunes were a little longer in length.. I've got my Ibanez Ex series tuned at a B right now, with a floyd rose of course and lock tuning. It's cool to tune that low, but it's something I wouldn't stick with all the time.

the lowest i go on my 6 string would be drop b to play inflames but i think G requires a seven string if i tuned that low my strings would come off!

Well I tune my B.C. Rich to Eb/D/C#/C
and my shitty Ibanez to B and sometimes A.
I like Mortician. I think it's probably cause I am a huge Horror Movie fan and I know what movie every song is about. Plus they have a unique sound and some cool riffs.
I tried G on my Ibanez. It was OK. But only good for Mortician. LOL
I want to get a new guitar with Floyed Rose on it and tune to B/Bb/and A.

hmm
I happen to like Mortician alot (if you couldn't tell from the all the tabs I got on here. Probably not as many as Bestial but close) and have no probs with tuning my guitar to Gb. I have an Ibanez RG270 and it works fine for it. I certainly wish ppl wouldn't bash the fucking band. I notice alot of band bashing goes on here and it's retarded. If you don't like the fucking band then don't post on a thread about em. Simple as that. I see lots of ppl bashing black metal and that's gay too. Keep your opinions to yourself if you don't like it. But whatever. no one's gonna listen to my opinion so whatever. Anyway, I'm a huge horror movie fan too and also know the majority of the samples they use. Here's my test..what do you think all the samples are from?

mortician isnt too bad, i do see what peoples problems are with them though theyre not a very talented band.
anyway, in the highly unlikely event of me covering a mortician song, i would tune a step down (D G C F A D) and just adapt the 002 power chords because they give essentially the same sound as the 022 power chords in G, but create a far better sound, they dont fuck up your guitar, and you wouldnt have to play using a bass amp.

That's an interested way of achieving the sound of the G chords. I'd try it out but my guitar is already in Gb and ppl with floating bridges know it's a pain in the ass changing tunings when you have to keep adjusting the bridge while keeping the strings in tune. It's true that they're not the most talented band in the world but sometimes simplicity is good. It's the all around heavyness they have that I like so much.
