Nah, I only know a few who let the Catholic guilt eat at them. Not that I blame them, since I'm sure it's hard to just ignore the morality you were raised with. Still, most guys I know who're raised Catholic don't feel it so strongly and don't have such a problem with birth control. I know a fair amount who feel guilt over sex, though, mostly from religious upbringing. I myself didn't have an upbringing that would bring any weight to embarassment about sex, so it's not like I had to overcome anything to realize that sex is a wonderful thing if you're not an idiot about it. What's most interesting, of course, is that their sex drive almost always beats out any feelings about pre-marital sex being wrong. I remember one - a female friend's boyfriend with a strong Protestant upbringing - who actually, according to her, felt it was okay, because, with the condom in the way, they're not really fully having sex. It's amazing, sometimes, the sophistries people will conjur up in order to justify doing something that doesn't need justification.

He can't wear condoms. He takes his religion too seriously - except, as I said, the thing against premarital sex - and feels guilty about using birth control. A lot of Catholic boys are the same way. I know a girl I dated would talk about how her Catholic ex got to feeling so guilty after sex that he'd go confess. He also wouldn't wear condoms, but figured it wasn't so bad if she was on the pill. It's a fanatical thing with some people though. Like the guy carefully planning out exactly how he'll destroy his current life if he gets his girlfriend pregnant.

It's fucking terrible. I had to back out of what would have been an easy lay because the girl refused to have sex with me if I used a condom. It's funny how the fact that I am adamantly atheist didn't bother her a bit, nor did the fact that according to her religion it would have been very wrong for her to have premarital sex in the first place. A lot of Catholics around here. Not all of them are that way, as you mentioned. I disagree with learning to dispatch morals forced upon you as a child. My mother is devoutly Christian, I've been an atheist since I was 13 years old. |

Good to hear it. A lot of people have trouble constructing a morality that contradicts the childhood habitus, even if they seem to have already moved beyond it. It's the sexual things that seem to really stick, though. Which is a shame, since that means that it must have been the most particularly stressed, which is idiotic.
As for myself, I never had any devout Christian relatives, so I never really had to transcend family morality, at least not regarding sexuality. About a complete and utter lack of any vestiges of the Protestant work ethic and feeling of contentment in alcohol, maybe, but sex? Never a problem. And I've been an atheist for about the same amount of time.
