For the picking technique, do mini sweeps (2 or 3 string sweeps) and make sure you are playing through the strings in one stroke rather than stopping for each one.
Major
E|-10p7-----7-
B|-----8p7-8--
Minor
E|-10p6-----6-
B|-----8p6-8--
Diminished
E|-10p7-----7-
B|-----9p7-9--
Make sure you get a sweep in there. For example, I like to up, up, down, down for my pickstrokes (up on 10, pull off 7, up on 8, pull off 7, down on 8, down on 7) and I can get two sorts of sweeps, ones with pull offs and normal sweeping though I like to focus on normal sweeping (I also enjoy up, down, down, down. Keep in mind that when doing this one I'm still only sweeping the last two). Mix it up so you don't get bored to death.
For you fretting hand, it's all about practice. Try going slow, with a metronome, and palm muting the strings at first (palm muting won't work as well with the mini sweeps I posted. Look for some full sweeps or use theory to find them). Then as your hand's speed increases, try getting clean and open. As stated above, you don't want strings to ring out.
