Not always true; there are some good quality cheap guitars. First, find a shape you want. Strats and Les Paul styles seem to be the main ones I see around with the excption of BC Rich style shapes, etc. For a first guitar, I suggest a Strat or other double cut. Next thing I would suggest looking at is the pick up style. You are probably going to be dealing with only single and dual coils. Experiment with them and see what you like the sound of. I'd reccomend 3 singles or 2 humbuckers (dual coils). If you are playing mostly hard rock or jazz, I'd suggest humbuckers. Last thing to really keep in mind is the scale length, or how long the string is stretched. This isn't a huge factor, but I can definately feel the difference in a small scale and larger scale. Don't go with minis, they are lame and I'll laugh at you. Some brands to search for are Ibanez (some of the best necks I've ever played although the hardware is quite badly made on the cheaper models) and Godin (might be two d's; I was playing one of these ($200 used) and I was amazed by how beatifully it played. Felt alot better than my $700 Ibanez). Some last minute suggestions are: Stay away from Tremelo units of any kind since you are starting (google "Floyd Rose" to see a killer), remember that used isn't always bad, watch out for heavy guitars, and focus more about how comfortable you feel with it than the sound.

The styles are quite obvious, it's not a guitar thing. Single coils... http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/ssl-2.jpg give a twangier sound used for a lot of bright (more emphasis on the treble) rock and bluesy stuff. Humbuckers... http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/SH-1.jpg or Dual coils as I like to call them, are two single coils combined to make a fatter, warmer sound used for metal and jazz. (Take note that each of these can have covers on them making them look slightly different.) I'd highly suggest looking for a cheap Godin or a Kramer if you can. If you can't find one of those, just get whatever. The idea of a first guitar is usually to see if your sure you want to go through with it. The amp shouldn't really matter since you aren't competing for volume and tone shouldn't be too valuable now.

First think about the feel and sound of the guitar then the looks, maybe.

most pawn shops don't have great prices. check out yard/garage sales. they can have steals. my friend got a $25 les paul copy, forgot the brand, think it's samick, but i also really don't remember heh. it is quite good! has nice block inlays, binding, etc, so it looks very nice, too. and $25.. dear god he ripped them off.
ebay is great when you've found what you're looking for. go to stores and see what it is that you like first, though. you may like the looks of a guitar only to be dissappointed by its feel when you play it. ie bc rich, lol.
pick up a bunch of guitars and see which fits you. i'm a big fan of the ibanez rg series. they're pretty plain, nothing flashy, but they're high-quality and low-price. ebay has some rg 570s for $300 in great shape. they have an awesome trem and fantastic neck. they're very comfortable and light-weight, also.
$300 is not a good budget for an electric and an amp, unless you find a steal somewhere, which is rare but possible. save up a bit more.. that would be my suggestion. don't get a $200 guitar when, in a few months, you'll want a nicer one. you will! $300 can get you a very nice used guitar. since your budget is low, go used. ebay rocks.
for an amp.. i'd suggest getting a cheap one and spending most of your money on a guitar that you'll like for years. you'll get *sound* out of a cheap amp. it won't be great, but you can upgrade when you get more money. you either get a crappy guitar that doesn't play well and sounds decent with a good amp, or get a nice guitar that plays very well and sounds alright until you can upgrade the sound.
to me, playability was more important than sound. you're not going to be good enough to need something that sounds amazing for a while, anyway. good playing skills does a lot more for sounding good than a good amp. a newbie with the best equipment will still sound bad. focus more on playing.

Yeah don't mess around with a crappy guitar, get something that plays nice or it will suck. Nothing worse than a shitty sounding guitar that goes outta tune all the time. Epiphone makes a pretty good cheap guitar, if you have to go that way. Don't spend under 300 though. You'll hate it everyday.

i spent $175 on a pacifica, and iv never hated it...
get a pacifica... you wont regret it, and then spent more cash on a good amp.

Fender telecaster's are neat guitars, and cost about $300, very good for starting, yet you can't get a guitar you'll wanna keep for $200.
I think BOSE has the best suggestion for you, lol.

Just get a fucking Epiphone starter package, and be done with it. Don't worry about dishing a shitload out for a guitar when you can't even play.

Agreed. You can tell he really is a new player. No real musician would allow himself to listen to that trash.

Start off with a Squier. They are cheap (less than $200, mine was $150), they are good for practicing on until your skills get better, and they are quite servicable for a couple years. After the first couple years, you will realize whether or not you really want to play guitar and at that point you can either A. quit, or B. invest more money into getting a better guitar. DON'T BUY A MINI-GUITAR. DON'T BUY A GUITAR WITH A SPEAKER BUILT INTO IT. DON'T BUY A GUITAR FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE. DON'T BUY A BC RICH BRONZE SERIES!!! They all suck. A Squier is simple and will last a few years. Run with it.

i still have two squiers, a affinity tele, and a stagemaster 7-string, and they fuckin rock, granted my tele has been to the shop several times, but i have been playing that guitar for the past 3 years, and it sounds fucking awesome, i popped a little 59' in the bridge, replaced the tuning heads, replaced the jack plate, and replaced the volume and tone pots, and the p/u selector switch, and all of that has been in the past 6 months to a year, only paid 75 bucks for it at a garage sale. so dont be shy to try a squier, or a tele, cus you just need a begginer guitar, and you can save up over time to get a nice guitar later. i agree with chris and some of the others, dont get a bronze bcrich, not worth it, the play ok, but they sound like shit.

For once BLS I agree with you. Going in to any explination of ICP has no place on metaltabs. ICP
