Writing Songs, playing solos.

My band has a song where the chord progression under which the solo is played goes like this

C-C#-C-D#-C -C#-C#-F repeat

i hammered out a basic solo which doesnt sound too bad, just by messing around the neck for a while.

However, my question is, how do i find out what key this is in so i can use the appropriate scale or mode to write a better solo.

Next question is, lets say your song is in C minor, which most of ours are, how do i know which scales and/or modes to solo in.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that is a matter of personal preference. Fool around with the different modes. Try C Ionian, C Dorian, C phrygian etc. until you find the best sounding one.

There are many other scales you can use as well.

edit: actually I don't think i know what i'm talking about, those sharps are kind of a curveball
