We all know im a dumbass, but i need help...
Hey.
Heres the deal. I dont know shit about amps. Seriously, i know jack. So heres my question.
Im sure its an easy fix, but its like my strings vibrate when ive got the guitar plugged in and im not using it. they give off a dumb harmonic like noise which just fucking pisses me off [especially when i go to do a solo or sumtin and like the e string start doing the noise or the g string]
So how do i stop it guys?
Thanks, Me

dumbass
anyways, please repraise the question, what you're saying now just sounds like you're not muting the other strings, if you've got a relatively shitty guitar other strings will resonate really easily

Just get used to muting the strings with either hand, what ever is easier for you when you are playing ( I use either, at different times) and between songs, turn down the volume. On alot of Slayer (I'm sure many other bands do it too) bootlegs I've listened to and seen, they do that with the volume knob between songs, and I suppose it is the best way. Not a stupid question, I was thinking of making a thread smilar to this one.

like every one else has said, ure not muting the strings and so their ringing out and creating unwanted feedback. it has nothin to do with ure amp, but is because u aint turned ure guitars volume off, perhaps u should do that or just put in a kill switch and flick that on wen ya wanna play and off wen ya dont

Arrgh, when soloing, use your thumb, or your picking hand to mute the strings you are not using, when you are palm-muting riffs (or solos for that matter) make sure you are palm-muting every string. I don't think a brige will make a difference. If you play alot of acoustic, it generally does not happen that much. Between songs, turn your volume knob off. Just try it and you will get the hang of it. Hell, if I can learn it by myself, so can you. Or anyone.

Hm... The thumb of your fretting hand? Never thought of doing that to mute strings, I'll try it out. Thanks MTM. Anyone else have any good tips on muting unwanted strings, especially when switching from heavy chord riffing to soloing, or when mixing fast single note runs and pinch harmonics in with chord riffing? I'd say that's been the most difficult aspect of basic technique for me to get the hang of. Always unwanted shit sounding when I don't want it to.

Yeah, well as I said, I'm teaching myself, none of my friends play, and I'm not learning from any books. 100% myself. I've been playing since X-mas and I thought I was doing ok, and really, I guess I am, it's just I dont pick up these tidbits.
Well, anyway, to everyone that posted in this thread, you've been a great help, and thanks HEAPS for putting up with my, uhh, lack-of-the-basics type knowledge. I thought I was gonna get a bunch of guys saying "Oh man your so dumb, ban this dude for being a dumbass [exaggeration]." But you put up with me good, and I appreciate it heaps.
