Geographic Locations =>Metal Style

Everyone's input would be very useful. Perhaps with enough info,
we can make a poll to vote on. What locations seem to be everyone's
preferred metal of choice/ or the worst.

U.S. Is the Florida scene 'the' scene in the U.S. Slayer, Death, Obituary, etc
originated in that area. They seem to be speed orientated.

Scandinavian countries: Entombed, Amorphis etc. They seem to be more
melodic and technical.

Britain: Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Napalm Death, Carcass. I can't really
describe that area too well.

Australia: Can't help there (don't know shit about the scene).

Asia: Is there one?

Any others locations worth mentioning.

Montréal: Cryptopsy, Quo Vadis, Martyr, Gorguts. Hard to describe all of them together but i think all of those are pretty much technical.

Australia : homeland of the almighty Psycroptic, Omnium Gatherum (how long is it gonna take before I receive the cd Nihilist!)... pretty much technical stuff...
Asia : I think the scene is much more hardcore-oriented

the styles of brutal death metal are sectioned throughout the us... newyork style is just extremely heavey with some out of the box thinking like suffocation... california is kind of hard to explain (severed savior, disgorge, and vile) and chicago is fused with technical and melodic influences (dying fetus, gorgasm)

Oh sure, asshat, Entombed is massively melodic. My scrotum plays nicer harmony.

I always rather liked both sides of the Stockholm/Gothenburg distinction, while it was still apparent.

Ok man, first, your mistakes:

King Diamond is from Denmark.
Slayer started in Southern California.

Don't you feel better?

US: I've always considered the Bay Area to have put out the prime US metal bands. Exodus, Death Angel, Heathen, Testament, Metallica, Possessed, Sadus, Forbidden, Pirhana, Hirax, etc. New York/New Jersey have also put out quality stuff such as OVERKILL, Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, S.O.D., Symphony X, etc. Florida had a big scene, but lately the bands coming out of there have been pretty much a dime a dozen.

Scandinavian: Black metal. Pretty much all of the originators. Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Immortal, etc.

Britian: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Napalm Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, and so on... Britian is home to alot of the most revered bands in metal, and as time moved on, punk blended with really angry metalheads and created grindcore.

Austrailia: I'm not really the expert on this, and I'm sure that others can contribute more than I, but Austrailia seems to be the home of most modern grind. There's also bands such as Destroyer 666 that came out of there.

Asia: Sigh, Loudness, umm...

Canada: One of the more eclectic metal areas, sporting Annhilator, Voivod, Kataklysm, and many others from varying styles.

Germany: Pretty much Metal's home at this point. One of the most supportive scenes to metal, with the annual Wacken festival, and many others just as noteworthy. As for bands? Please... Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Assassain, Tankard, Therion etc.

Finland: A country that has been blooming as of late, thanks mostly to Children of Bodom and the atrocious shitfest known as H.I.M. Other notworthy bands include Nightwish, Sentenced, and Impaled Nazerene.

Canada for sure. Also, South Carolina for Nile. Karl was born there and Nile is essentially his vision so I'm sticking them down as natives of SC!

I also like what New York has produced, especially Immolation and Suffocation. Here in England we have the mighty Akercocke, these guys will rule the world one day!

The Australian scene seems pretty healthy, too, with a lot of brutal technicality being produced for our receptive ears.

Dying Fetus is from Maryland, and come on USA brutal death metal all the way.

The music I really don't like I've heard classified as Gothenburg which is in Sweden, THE only good band from there is Meshuggah.

Poland sucks as they always have, and what is so great about Ran?

Norway is about 50/50 with their musical turnouts, some are all shit some aren't that bad.

Asia I don't know about there scene.

Aussie's are all grind not my cup'o'tea.

Africa still only have RUMBATUMBADDA drums.

South America has some brutal shit too, haven't heard any band out of mexico.

Canada has a few good bands true, but too much 'metal' with hardcore vocals not to interesting.

Solely based on what I've heard and know, but all of it's opinion, except Dying Fetus is from Maryland, and their new rythm guitarist is from Salt Lake.

Europe = Black Metal
Some people would say that Norway would be the leading scene nowadays, but nothing really good haven't been released since Carpathian Forest's first MCD (with exceptions) but Immortal, Enslaved, Mayhem, Emperor, Burzum, Gorgoroth etc. has split-upped or their music isn't anymore in the same level as it was on early 90's. Now the leading scenes come from Best Finland, Sweden and France, also Germany and Poland has many good bands.

There are also many other metal genres around Europe (like Germany's Thrash metal scene), but they haven't yet broke the domination of Black Metal (I am now talking about the amount of bands and how stable is the appreciation of the genre, not about which is famous at mainstream (because those change frequently))

America (and/or USA) = Death Metal, Thrash Metal
These metal genres are emphasized to here. America has very little amount of good Black Metal bands, but Death and Thrash has totally take over America's scene. US have Dark Angel, Slayer, Overkill, Sadus, Master, Deicide, Morbid Angel and Obituary. Canada have Martyr, Annihilator and Voivod. And Brazil have Sepultura and Sargofagó and so on.

Asia = Everything
Asia's scene is strange, they make every possible metal genres and appreciate them equally. Japan has some good Black Metal bands and also some good Grindcore (Sigh, Sabbat, Abigail, S.O.B.) , Singapore has Impiety, Australia (I count this to Asia, though it's defined as a single mainland) has Gospel of the Horns, Deströyer 666, Long Voyage Back, Nazxul and Sadistik Exekution.

Also Asia's scene is somehow stable and same time continually changing, when they enthusiastic from some music (in this case Metal), they stick into it until there comes some new genre of music what will be the new ardour to replace the old.

Greece : (black metal)Rotting Christ(the band
Emperor heard and then started playing BM),Necromantia,Varathron,
Unholy Archangel,Nightfall,Macabre Omen,Nocternity,
End,Kawir(trying to revive ancient greek music),
Fiendish Nymph(later changed their name to
Daimonia Nymph and played ancient greek music),
Sonichaos Aeon

(Death/Grind metal) Obsence,Homo Iratus,Psycho Choke,
Leprosy.

(heavy/Power metal) Inner Wish,Merauder

Though most of the people here listen to Heavy/Power metal,
the best greek bands have always been Black/Death bands.

NO! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!

NAPALM DEATH AND CARCASS WERE TWO BRITISH BANDS THAT BLENDED THEIR LOVE FOR PUNK AND REPULSION TO CREATE GRINDCORE.

STOP TALKING! YOUR BRAIN ISN'T WORKING!

I dont think location has anything to do with a bands style. What decides the style is simply the way the members think. For example, i am from texas and i play viking/black metal. It has nothing to do with location. I dont even know if this is the purpose of the thread, nor do i care becuase im a bit drunk. But otherwise, i still dont think i would care.

I think that S.O.B. is grindcore and the three others are Black Metal. Maybe the sentence was bit complex.

Well what ever, you are correct HELLBLASTER-666, Emperor has a lot of influences from the old Rotting Christ and not many people know this, people think that Emperor brought synths into Black Metal, but there were other bands which used them before Emperor, like Rotting Christ, Master's Hammer and Tormentor, and these influented Emperor to make that kind of music (very raw black metal with synths to add atmosphere).

And yes, Greek bm scene is very good (at least was?), this scene is also belongs to the scenes which have left to the underfoot of Norway's strong scene at early 90's. But nothing can change the fact that Necromantia and Varathron are and were one of the best BM bands which have ever existed and these bands even beat many Norway's "true" bands.

Akercocke is a capuchin monkey from Robert Nyes version of the Faust mythos.

Brujeria consist of Dino (Fear Factory), Nick Barker and Shane Embury (Napalm) as well as 3 vocalists form somewhere, i dont think they can really be classed as mexican

Yeah, I know, but every time I see a discription in a magazine it always entails the words "Mexican" and strangely, "bandits" (they look like musicians to me). Oh well, maybe they should be described as Amexish, or something...

Thank you for correcting me about Slayer and King Diamond.

Yeah, it looks like Finland rules the world with all the quality bands that were listed thanks to Decrepify.

I'm not saying this to nitpick, only to inform. Slayer originated from Californian, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate from Denmark I believe.

My personal opinion would have to be the (Northern California) Bay Area thrash metal scene. Testament, Exodus, Violence, Metallica, etc. Southern Cali had some good thrash, too (Megadeth, etc.) but the Bay Area was where it was at. A very close second would HAVE to be Floridian death metal. Morbid Angel, Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation (I know they started in NY, but it doesn't matter, they moved to FL for a reason), Deicide, etc. Come to think of it, I don't know which I like more. Probably depends on my mood.

The Florida scene wouldn't have been what we know it as today if it weren't for the Bay Area scene, IMO

Are you talking in terms of influence? If so, you are right, but then again, without the late 60's hard rock and proto-metal scene (Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin etc.) there never would have been metal at all. And without nerds like Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc., there would have been hard rock or proto-metal.

Some people were talking about Asia earlier...I only really know about the Japanese scene, where there is a LOTTTT of hardcore (J-core). Just take any run of the mill american hardcore band like Terror (faster stuff) and add some keyboards and broken english. Bands like GISM, Fuck on the Beach, Rocky and the Sweden (my band listed in my signature kind of tries to copy that style if you want to hear an iffy example).
Grindcore is big too in Japan, but its kind of the same deal as (Boston!!) Massachusetts in the states. The grind and hardcore bands are all in the same scene and they all play shows together and the influences meld so that the bands all turn out as grindy-hardcore or breakdown-heavy grind.

Everybody does. We just try to ignore him. You should join us, it's fun watching him say stupid shit while everybody else just ignores him and stays on topic (I am off topic right now, but that was as a reply to you, not him). He's the most ineffective troll you'll ever see.

It's pretty tough to see any band at all when you're located 'six feet under'
