Watchtower
Dark Angel
Nasty Savage
Metal Church
Death Angel
Violence
Forbidden
Testament
Exodus
Possessed
Mercyful Fate
Annihilator
Destruction (BESTIAL INVASION!)
Fates Warning (No Exit was 100% thrash, I don't give a fuck what you say)
Exhorder
Kreator
Nuclear Assault
Overkill
S.A. Slayer (Originally just called Slayer, they changed the name because the Slayer we know and love were more well known. From San Antonio,
Texas, hence the initials)
Pre-1992 Anthrax
Pre-1995 Slayer
Pre-1990 Metallica
Megadeth (when they were thrash)
Sepultura (when they were thrash)
Thrash is my favorite form of music, death metal is close, though.

I dislike the whiny power metal kinda vocals by some thrash bands, I tend to prefer more aggressive/heavy sounding thrash bands. Here are some I like -
Kreator (till Coma Of Souls)
Slayer (only till RiB)
Sodom (selected albums)
Dark Angel (early)
Devastation
Necrodeath
Sepultura (till Arise)
Destruction
Dead Head
Indungeon
Possessed
Sabbat
Sadus
Protector
Infernal Majesty
Sacrifice
Slaughter
Razor
Other deathrash kinda bands -
Massacra (first 3)
Loudblast (Sensorial Treatment)
Cerebral Fix
Comecon (Megatrends In Bruality)
Solstice (US)
Malevolent Creation (first 3)
Pestilence (Malleus Maleficarum)
Asphyx (early)
Mortal Terror
Thanatos
Insanity
Soulburn
Bluuurgh
Destroyer 666
Ghoul/Frightmare
etc etc

OVERKILL
Dark Fucking Angel
Voivod
Exodus
Kreator
Vio-Lence
Agent Steel
Anthrax
Megadeth
Testament
Annihilator
Death Angel
Sodom
Metallica
Slayer (But they're really fucking overrated sometimes)
Nuclear Assault
Possessed
Sepultura
Usurper (Blackened, but still thrash)
I wouldn't consider Soilwork (old or not) thrash if someone put a gun to my head, and I hold The Haunted solely responsible for the shit storm that is Carnal Forge.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Sadus.

How are you supposed to keep it down to two favorites? You'd have to not care much for thrash if you can narrow it down that far. If I had included things like death/thrash and black/thrash, that list would have been a lot longer. If somebody asked me what my favorite progressive metal band was, on the other hand, I could keep that to a minimum.

Megadeth (pre-Euthansaia)
Sepultura (pre-Chaos)
in that order.

Yeah, but I'm sure most folk can whittle it down to just a few sterling examples of what they find most pleasing about thrash - sort of like, "If you could only take three thrash albums with you to the afterlife, what would they be?". OK, that wasn't the question per se, but surely every thrash band that people are into can't be their favourites?

Strange, strange people. Seasons In The Abyss is brilliant, it combined the fast of Reign In Blood with the slow of South Of Heaven masterfully. How can a Slayer fan not like that mouth-watering proposition? Oh well, as Gary Coleman would no doubt concur, diff'rent strokes, I suppose...

D.R.I. (yes, the thrash years)
Suicidal Tendencies (some call it thrashcore)
Testament

Exodus

I agree with you. I also find Divine Intervention to be chronically underrated. That whole album whips a mustang's ass with a belt.

Ditto (head!). That was my first Slayer album and I love it from start to finish. I don't see why people consider it a bad album - even the band themselves almost refer to it as a mistake. I wouldn't say chronically underrated, I'd say criminally underrated.

The album is damn near flawless. Hell, I burned a CD with Reign in Blood and Divine Intervention (Reign in Blood is so short it will fit on a CDR with almost any other Slayer albm). Listening to those CD's back to back is fucking insane. I also think South of Heaven is underappreciated, but not nearly as much as Divine Intervention, it also isn't quite as good as Divine Intervention. Still a solid album top to bottom, although I'm not fond of the Priest cover. Judas Priest aren't a good band to cover. The only band I can think of that did a great cover of Priest were Mercyful Fate, their cover of The Ripper was even better than the original. I guess the Death Painkiller cover wasn't too bad, but I certainly wouldn't jizz in my jeans over it.

I heard the new Annihilator sucks ass. Meh, they sort of went downhill after Alice in Hell. It's a shame, considering it's their first album.
You want good modern thrash?
Exodus-Tempo of the Damned
Overkill-Bloodletting
Sodom-M-16
Destruction-The Antichrist
Death Angel-The Art of Dying
Kreator-Violent Revolution
Testament-The Gathering
Some are better than others, but I enjoy all of these.
