old/new opeth
to add to the seemingly endless list of opeth threads:
old (orchid, morningrise) or new (my arms ---> damnation) opeth?
i bring this up cos while listening to orchid today i realised that i find the first two albums with the old rhythm section (anders nordin and johan de farfalla) a lot more atmospheric than the more widely acclaimed newer releases with the two blokes from u-r-gay. not that i hate it or anything, i love all their stuff, but i prefer old.
which do you prefer?

Orchid is their best album, but I'm starting to lean towards Still Life. Morningrise is also close behind.
Anything after Still Life only shows slight signs of their brilliance.

for me, the production on the first few albums gets in the way of the aongs...especially the drums sounds. regardless, i like the newer albums (still life and forward) more, deliverance is probably my favorite

I dig Still Life. Opeth are kind of hit or miss for me, and the only record that I really listen to often is that one. Godhead's Lament alone, for me at least, stands above the rest of their stuff.

Er, difficult to establish for me. I like Blackwaterpark and The Moor, Blackwaterpark being their best 'new' album, and The Moor (wich I like better) being somewhere between the 'old' and the 'new' Opeth.

orchid is still my favorite album. though still life is probably second for me. i'm not a big fan of making the melodic tracks seperate tracks on the newer albums, i kind of liked them as one big track

I like that Gore/Death Metal band Bloodbath. Which features Opeth's singer. I never really got into either groups. But in Bloodbath I think it's Opeth's singer's best work.

hmm sorry to revive this but i figured i would get flamed if i started a new one. i just went and bought Blackwater Park because it was the only Opeth CD they had. is it a good one? i plan on getting many more, so please tell me your opinions on the best one
EDIT: i know its good because i listened to it and i fuckin love it. what i mean is, is it one of their better ones

From any other band, it's amazing. For Opeth, it's subpar.
If you like this one, you'll ADORE "Still Life". My personal favourites are Orchid, followed by Still Life and Morningrise (I can't decide on which is best).

morningrise is personally my favourite effort, but still life is probably the one you will like as it is more progressive and is more "opethy." Deliverance being their worst, albeit heaviest effort.

Damnation is okay. You're really best off with Still Life, Orchid and Morningrise. They are MUCH better albums. You will love them. |
