a stack as in fullstack? no way are you going to get two cabs and a head that don't sound like ass for that much.....
if your lucky you could grab a used crate blue voodoo head(bv120h) for like $400 american, and then like $200 on a used peavey ms412 4x12 cab....
about $600 total and it would actually sound really good. only a half stack but still more than you'll probably need... trust me.....
other than that you're probably fucked and going to be stuck with something really shitty.
don't be afraid to buy used.

all the ones that I've played have come as close to completely sucking as possible. Who needs tube distortion when you can have transistor buzz.

alot of it is the person playing through the amp.

When i play a powerchord and it sounds like solid state buzz that has nothing to do with my playing.

it might have nothing to do with you're actual "playing", maybe just your ability to turn a couple knobs....
you'd be suprised how many people knock amps left and right just because they can't eq them properly... not all amps are voiced the same....what settings sound good on a jcm 900 at high volumes wone neccisarrily sound good on a 5150.... because they're different amps....
but i've honestly never played a crate that sounds like "s.s. buzz" when strumming a powerchord... so i'm interested in this, what one was it?

Yeh I thought my Crate SS head sucked for awhile. Then I fucked with the knobs and got a pretty decent sound out of it.

Well I played a crate gt or gx 212 the other day (forgot which, they all look the same). I fucked around with the knobs for a good 10 minutes and i still never got anything even coming close to sounding as good as my ghetto crap setup (one lee jackson perfect connection gp1000 on clean channel boosting another one because i dont have an od pedal and running to a behringer gx210's clean channel which totally fucks up the sound). It always had that crappy solid state cheapo sound.
