The two things on each side of my head and internet.
I just finished learning Bodom After Midnight all the way through and up to speed, including leads

wow! me too!
ok, in actuality, i learned with a little help from the internet, some tabs, and friends.
i also used to live in DSS custody so all i did for like 12 hours straight, everyday, was play guitar.
i still look to the internet every now and then for tips.

It started with musicclass in school, was nothing hard at all but it got me into guitar. Then i read some books, looked on the internet and played some with friends. It was nice, but i'm still practicing, as always.

I had a teacher in year five, and my dad also taught me, but i quit sometime in year six, cos i had nothing interesting to play, i wasnt into metal back then
I've just started again a couple of months ago, and i remembered enough of the basics to teach myself.

I was self taught (almost entirely for the most part). the first day i got a guitar i checked a book from the library, and thats how i learned to finger the guitar, and hammer-ons, pulloffs, slides, and bends. I bought the book for Metallica: Load, and the songs are pretty easy so it was good practice for riffs, those aforementioned techniques and the odd solo (i use to think that pentatonic part in the King Nothing solo was SO fast, heh).
I would screw around alot, and some time during this point, i figured out how to do artifical harmonics and r.h tapping from experimentation
Then i learned sweep picking from www.ultimateguitar.com
and then i learned inside picking from the book Rock Discipline by John Petrucci. ( I've never really thought about it but i knew it there was something wrong when i was doing easylooking runs and they seemed awkward for some reason)
yeah that's about it.

Self taught. I learnt everything I know from tab books but since I haven't bought a tab book since I was 16 years old I've also developed through figuring songs out by ear.

I got tabs online and learned songs. That wasn't workin' for me and I got discouraged. Then my aunt introduced me to her friend who was a guitar teacher who loved jazz. He taught me about scales. I practieced those to death and learned my theory really good till I could shred and write songs that actually sound good. I learned many things online as well, though I hate to admit it.

I remember that when I was younger, I thought that the best music was dance music. I would listen to KTU almost non-stop.
That is, until my father caught me listening to ABBA. Then he let me listen to "PowerSlave" by Iron Maiden. I was so captivated, he also gave his old guitar. He taught me to play lots of Iron Maiden and from there, my interest grew.
Now that my pops passed away, Im glad that I am able to teach my own kid.

Teached myself by ear and fucking around. I didn't learn how to read music or tabs until later and I got even better. I know basic stuff about theory but I don't really think about it while playing, because I just know what I want it to sound like and where to play on the guitar to get that sound. I know scales but I don't know the names. I don't think learning more about theory would help very much, because once I do look into something I find that I already figured it out before on my own.

lots of books (mostly scanned - off the net) and videos. i have somewhere around 200.. from tab books to lesson books, and a bunch of full-length video lessons.
troy stetina's books are awesome for learning good technique. check out speed mechanics for lead guitar, or any of his books, really.

I pretty much taught myself, i just recently had my first lesson after playnig for 6 years, im taking jazz lessons. But the biggest help has been the internet, i started listening to Children OF bodom, and started really slowly learning the rythym then the solos really REALLY slow then going faster and faster via METRONOME, the metronome is so fucking helpful. Start learning how sweep pick like 3 months ago, and im pretty damn good at it. So dont sit on your ass and wait for stuff to come to you, instead of playing video games, go to shows, and sit on the computer and use Guitar Pro and www.Mysongbook.com to learn how to play your favorite songs, you can also use Winamp and Pacemaker Plug-in, thats my main source to figuring out alexis solos, it slows down the song by 50% and you can start doing note for note, trying to find out how to play solos.
cheers

your goin to fast there brotha, you cant start tabbing by ear unless you know how to play a shit load of songs and have musical understanding, then you will start to recognize things you hear and be able to figure out what the guy is doing.
