I want to know what do you guys prefer in the lyrical or image content of a metal band? Satan or Gore.

I prefer Gore since it's more real than Satan. Satan is all fantasy but stuff like murder and necrophilia can and sometimes do happen. Satan is not serious at all. I know some people would say gore is stupid but at least the gore bands can say "Yeah it's all a joke. We don't take ourselves seriously." But the satanic people try too hard to keep their "evil, dark, and antichrist" image up. Yeah hold swords and wear capes and face paint. Yeah that's real serious there buddy. All their lyrics are the same too "Fuck god, worship satan. blah blah blah Nosforatu! Satan!!!" Fuck off! At least Cannibal Corpse or Exhumed have different story lines in their songs. Sure it's all gore but it's different forms of gore. I think it was low for the black metal scene to pick a fight with the death metal scene. We are all going to die someday and rot away. But I think people are afraid of the truth and hide behind a world of fantasy where they think Satan will protect them from death...no one escapes death. No one.

So yeah Gore or Satan? What do you prefer? vs

Since everybody else is trying to get their post counts up by making 3 word comments such as "this thread sucks" instead of just leaving it be, and letting it drop in the order of threads, so that nobody can see it, I will attempt to give my opinion.

I think that when gore is overdone, to the point of it just being completely disgusting and scary (im talking overly scary) it's just disturbing and no good. I like it when bands mix it in, but talk about other stuff at the same time. Both Satan and Gore can be good when done right. An example of a band that uses both is Black Dahlia Murder, who doesn't go overboard with any of them. Listen to a song like "The Blackest Incarnation." Or any of the songs on the cd for that matter. "Thy Horror Cosmic" is a more Satanic song, while "apex" and "closed casquet requiem" are more Gore oriented.

I hope this was the kind of answer you were looking for. I'd say it's the best one yet

Satan, Yay. Gore, NAY (Carcass is the exception).

They arent the only two genres, as other have pointed out.
It depends what mood im in really, for the style of music
But generall Satan>Gore for me, cos i like Black Metal better than Death usually, and a lot of older bands are antichristian. Although there are some Antichristian bands, that arent Satanic.

I disagree with many of the others and find this an excellent question. I find most gore lyrics to bore me to tears, and I find ALL Satanic lyrics to do the same. The difference between the two is that gore actually CAN be done right, mostly because it's not something to take seriously. Those Satanic poseurs can go fuck themselves.

I also find it humorous how many of those bands write Satanic lyrics and then distance themselves from religion when asked about it. If you don't have anything to say about it, then shut the fuck up. Nobody cares if you hate God/Jesus/whatever. Maybe you should get a life and not hate somebody that doesn't exist. You don't see me going around writing songs about how I hate Huckleberry Finn and Mother Goose.

Gore lyrics are more likely than not horrible, due to stupidity, unrealism, and people going back and forth just spewing out random gory things (i.e. Chris Barnes' lyrics). However, some are great. Carcass lyrics are fucking awesome, they are obviously not meant to be serious. I find their lyrics VERY humorous.

Personally I prefer people who don't devote themselves to either one or the other. I like Suffocation's, Malevolent Creation's, and Monstrosity's lyrics. While a lot of them are gory, not all are, and there's a lot of creativity, something you don't see from bands that devote themselves to gore.

Gore, sometimes humorous, always seems to be over done. The only gore lyrics I can enjoy are Lord Worm's, Gorerotted, and the older Carcass material.

What was that one goregrind band formened by a bunch of Doctors? They had interesting lyrics too.

I'd prefer probably a mix of both rather than any particular one. To much gore is just plain boring. Over use of Satanic symbolism can also get boring after a while. ya ya we know you love Satan and hate God...it gets old anyways. I like viking metal and folk metal with lyrics a lot. Viking because of the whole norse mythology like Amon Amarth and for Folk Metal definitely Elvenking. Great lyrical content and all. But for a mix of satan and gore i'd say The Black Dahlia Murder also. They have some really great lyrics. i.e. Funeral Thirst, The Blackest Incarnation.

In my eyes, gore never gets old. I enjoy listening to lyrics explaining bloody, brutal deeds... Lots of people do. There's no limit to the amount of gore you can stash in a song. No matter how gruesome lyrics are, they could always get worse. I like that.

And satanic, religious type songs, I have nothing against them. I don't really care about religion, it's interesting, but I dont take it all too seriously. But that doesn't mean that I wont listen to bands who do, because I like reading/hearing about different views and shit.

I'll listen to gore and satanic music... Neither of them bother me.

Any subject can give rise to good or shitty lyrics. Some other subjects of metal besides gore and satan, besides those mentioned so far: pain, loss, power, betrayal, righteous anger, despair (Trendkill's mellifluous warblings exhibited many of these nicely ). For excellent satanic lyrics I love Rotting Christ... so poetic and vivid. On another note, somehow it seems easier to take cheesy gore lyrics than cheesy satanic lyrics. Maybe cause gore is just more fun in the end.

I started a gore metal band that lasted about a month. It was basically a joke. Our name was Hanging Gutted Torso, which was a joke because it seemed like common gore metal name. We wrote 20 songs in about a hour. My favorite song was Chainsaw Anal Sex because it was longer than 3 minutes and it was a good mosh song. And we played one show to a bunch of friends and we were covered in fake blood, our small occult following lol. But don't get me wrong, I still love gore metal, but we didn't take ourselves seriously.

Man, for some reason almost every gore bands has a song about anal sex and vomiting or a combination of the two (take Exhumed's Oozing Rectal Feast or The Exquisite Flavor of Gastro-Anal Tripe as an example). You can go to google and type vomit anal sex and shit load of gore metal bands will pop up.

But if you're talking about the way the song sounds then I can't help you. To me it sounds a little like Grotesque Impalement by Dying Fetus.
