5150 and 5150 II
I don't know if this is worth a thread, but what is the difference between the Peavey 5150 head and the 5150 II head?

the 5150 II has separate eq's for the lead and crunch/clean.... with the regualar 5150 the clean/crunch channel shares the same eq as the lead.
thats the main difference.... they do sound slightly different, i wouldnt say one is much better than the other. i like the 5150 II though mostly because of the seperate eqs.

The 5150 II has less gain, and a worthless adjustable bias pot. so dont think that if you buy the 5150 II that you wont need to get the bias mod.

With the MkII they tried to make the rhythm channel sound better for cleans, which resulted in a slight loss of evilness on the lead channel (apparently).
I have used my mate's live a few times, and I always had the gain cranked with the crunch switch in, to actually use the lead channel for leads with the lead channel's post gain slightly higher to break out of the mix for solos.
I'm saving up for my own, and I'm just gonna go with a Mk I cos I didn't really use the seperate EQ (well, I did, but I wasn't fussed on it), and it certainly isn't worth the extra cash for my purposes.

i wouldnt say one has more or less gain than the other, they both have more than enough gain... my guitarist has the gain on his 5150 at 5-7.... and it's plenty....
i think the cleans can actually get pretty sweet, but usually you have to sacrifice good cleans for hella heavy dist.
thats one reason i like the 5150 II more, because you don't have to sacrifice or compomise...
the bias thingy on the 5150 II is nice to have, but it's very narrow.... neither the 5150 or the 5150 II "need" the bias mod, but i still think it's worth $50 or an hour or so of diy(if you know how)....
my guitarist is going to get more stuff done to his when he gets the money.... completely retubing it with all jj's,a bias mod, noise mod, and he's even thinking of getting it setup for el34's or e34ls... he's just gonna need a couple hundred for these operations... but it will be a night and day difference in his tone.

The 5150 II does have less gain, but it dosent really matter since they both have more than enough gain. That why the 5150 II also has a better clean channel, and the seperate eq helps too.

meh, i don't remember the 5150 II really having less gain... just a slightly different tone..... but yes... imo it's the better of the two.
