Well, i don´t think that Bodom is Blackmetal, but it makes sense that a lot of people believe that!
For example in the Downfall Video (it´s mostly a live video), you see the guys playing on stage and inbetween you see Alex Laiho playing around with a knife in a little room covered with blood. It´s the same Knive that Varg from Burzum held in his hands for some Photos:

I don´t think that it´s just coincidence. No HeavyMetal or Powermetal Singer would ever play around with a knive the way he does in this video!
For me it looks more like a tribute to Blackmetal or maybe even to Varg!
Another point is Alex´s voice, it definitively is a BlackMetal voice. This screaming stuff isn´t usual in normal Heavy or Power Metal.

But i don´t think that Bodom is a BlackMetal Band, they are way to melodic.
But i definitively think that they are influenced by BlackMetal-Music!

Anyway it stupid to categorize such Bands as Bodom, they just do their own thing!

How anyone could think that Children of Bodom would be Black Metal? Yes, some of their members have roots in Black Metal (Thy Serpent) and vocals are slightly Black Metal influenced, but it doesn't make it Black Metal. I say that their music somewhat power/speed metal with Black Metal influenced vocals, and Death Metal style theme, nothing else.

Catagorizing a bad band like children of bodom as black metal is easy...it's called blackened power metal. It uses music elements from both worlds and vocals that are black metal tainted with power metal.
No band you listen to is true underground unless it's some unsigned unreleased demo tape by some garage band, and they usually suck ass.
Lastly, you can't say any genre has no talent because their are talented bands in every genre. I love openminded intelligent people who say things like that.

The easiest way to dismiss the whole question is to ask yourself "do they really need to be categorized into a specific genre?" Children of Bodom plays Children of Bodom metal and nothing more or less. Don't waste your time trying to figure out what genre they need to be crammed into.

COB=no form of black metal. There is no element at all that makes up for black metal. They are melodic speed/power, or whatever else you can catagorize it as. But definately not black metal. Maybe the vocals at times, but for no reason is the music "black". I prefer to call them as "melodic metal". For that is all i know them by.

Im not too sure where it was, actually the crowd was pure asians (no racism intended! ). Anyway ive never seen them live, just a few videos. So to sum up my post, it was a bad ass tape, and they surely dont suck. Maybe not appealing to all, but no way do they SUCK.
