Ive never listened to metallica... I've heard things. good and bad. Good things from the people who listen to korn and think they're 'so fucking metal', and bad things from most people for whom i have respect. I've never bothered to download, and since I'm keeping my record of never in my life paying for cds (every single album/song/filmclip/movie i own has been burnt/downloaded. I'm proud) I just... havent really heard them.

I'm a huge Death/Shuldiner fan, but yeah, I'd have to agree with you. The guy in Necrophagist (Mohammed something) is probably the most insane guitarist I've ever heard, with Michael Angelo being the most insane guitarist I've ever seen. Not live, I just saw a videotape of his shit, he was crazy. He had this really odd double neck, not anything like the ones you usually see, and he was playing rhythm with one hand on one neck while soloing on the other neck with his other hand. Fucking insane.

BTW, greatest masterminds to ever come together in one band- Doug Cerrito and Terrence Hobbs.

The guys in Cynic, Atheist, Malevolent Creation, Monstrosity, Testament, Exodus, Nile, and Emperor (especially Isahn) deserve honorable mention.

I really have to disagree, I think their solos are boring. But, Hobbs does write LOTS of awesome riffs.
Greatest combinations for guitar are Skolnick and Peterson, Mameli and Uterwijk, and Friedman and Mustaine, as underrated as he is. Thats all.

EDIT: I couldn't leave out leave out Raatikainen and Alexi.

Ill admit it influenced many bands (Alexi Laiho) but i hardly call it metal, just extremely great guitar work. Jason never did listen to metal, and i highly doubt that his goal was to create a metal band. Maybe Marty brought in some metal elements though.

Varg is musically genious in the fact that he can show raw emotion from simplicity...either that or he's just fucking crazy. I know enough to know that he didn't go "pussy" as someone said. He had all his instruments takin away after trying to run away from jail. They are all unfinished albums too. He's a fucking nut case but definitley not a pussy.
Mustaine is very amazing, but other than his technical abilities, he can't really write above average songs. Same thing with fucking zack wild (or however you spell it), amazing soloist and technically genious, but he blows at singing and makes terrible songs.
Kirk is special though, in his youth he made some riffs that we still bang our heads too, and even if his music writing sucks now, so do alot of older bands new stuff (I.E. slayer, but you don't denounce kerry king's speed do you?).
other fav's of mine that could easily be argued is joey satriani, tonny iommi, jimmy paige. I think Nile's guitarists are extremly clever in the way the mix that egyptian sound effects from his lap top and the very technically impressive guitar playing to make some killer riffs that flow perfectly with the fast paced drumming.

Atleast he said that in an interview. And Burzum (/Varg) had done his all Metal albums outside from jail (actually when his views even weren't national socialistic). Even the Filosofem album were recorded way back 92-93.

Before Venom?, I think it was after.
Hellhammer was pre-Celtic Frost (formed in 1982), they played Black/Speed Metal and some Death Metal too and they were quite influentical to the Second wave of Black Metal.
