Tomb of the Mutilated Tone - 5150?
I love the tone Cannibal corpse gets on Tomb of the Mutilated, and I read they used Crate amps on that album. That tone's so fuckin heavy its incredible.
However, I wanna know:
Do you think it's possible to get a similar tone out of a 5150, without downtuning? (I know I always post about 5150s, but fuck that's what I've got to work with). What pedals/pickups/whatever would I use? What settings on the amp? --Gracias

They only downtuned a half step on that album...

they do alot of 7 stringing.... as well as some 6 string stuff. but i don't think they do alot of down tuning....
you could probably work something with your 5150... is it the combo or head? what kind of cab do you have? any mods done to it?

I've got a 5150 combo. No mods except electroharmonix 12ax7s. I'm thinking about getting a BBE sonic maximizer. No extra cabs, though I think there's a jack to plug one in, and I'd be open to getting a cab if it'd give me some super-heavy tone options.

Nowadays I usually set it at:
Lead channel
7 pre-gain
9 bass
4 mid
7 treble
3 reverb
1-2 post-gain
8 resonance
6-7 presence
But I'm not fully satisfied with the heaviness of the tone. I just tried using the same settings with the "rythm" channel to see if I could get more punchy bass... it worked for the bass, but took away the balls and the good palm-muting. Even so, I actually liked that tone more than I thought I would. But I'll still leave it on "lead" 98% of the time.
Transient, do you use an eq or sonic maximizer?

if you want more balls out of it then a sonic maximizer will definately bring it.
i myself would swap the stock sheffeild 1200's out for a celestion vintage 30 and a celetion g12t-75.....
g12t-75's have a natural scoop heavy tone(lots of lows and highs with headroom) to them which is really thick and bottom heavy.... they're in most marshall 1960 cabs.... vintage 30's are quite possibly the best speakers on the planet imo... good lows and highs, but it's the loads midrange and cone breakup that makes them sound beautiful imo.....
good combination, it's what i use in both my 4x12's two v30's and two g12t-75's in a criss cross pattern.

I don't know if I want to fuck around with the speakers in the combo, because I like their sound pretty much. But what if I bought a cheap used 212 cabinet and replaced the speakers with those celestions, then plugged the thing into the "external speaker" jack on the back of the combo? Do you think the amp has enough power to drive all four speakers well?

yes, you could drive all those speakers with a 15w combo if you wanted......
if you like the stock speakers, great, but i was just suggesting my preference in speaker configurations....
alot of people buy 2x12 combos and team them up with an extension 2x12 or 4x12 cab.... it's just louder.
in fact it think doubling speakers if a more effecient way of getting more volume than doubling wattage.

I'm not sure what amps they were using back then but when they played in Ace Ventura Pet Detective, they were using marshall amps. Of course that probably means nothing.
A little while back when I was using a B-52 tube amp head I was forced into using my Metal Zone for distortion. I got an excellent tomb of the mutilated tone from that but it did lack clarity and got pretty muddy at points.
I'm not sure how you could get a good TOTM tone from a 5150 because I havent played the combos, only the cold heads. That sonic maximizer will help and just fucking with the knobs will help too.
Fuck, I got a decent Cannibal Corpse tone from my Crate SS head (no pedals!). I know, Crate!...

The Tomb tone was just a Marshall JCM800 with a Boss Metal Zone in front of it for the gain. The 5150 will do just fine, use the clean channel and the pedal.
In this case the pedals are the preamps and the amps are only used for their tube power amp section. It's no secret.

no, he would still be using the heads preamp, but with a pedal in front of it for gain & added tone shaping.

He told me in 1999 I think when they toured here for Bloodthirst.Didn't seem that strange to me as Pat O'Brien uses one in front of his rectifier live.
Oh well...

hahahahahahahahaha.... why the fuck would pat use the mt 2 on his triple recto??? i think your pulling my leg dude. because he wasnt using one when they came here a couple months ago... and i'll be seeing them again in about a week.
i could understand an o.d. box in front of a cranked jcm800, but dude, c.c. has it made and has great equipment, why would they rely on a shitty pedal for distortion?

Right now Jeremy Turner (ex-Origin) is filling Jack's void, but he hasent been named as the full time replacement yet.

It's funny how a lot of you think seem to think you need a Bogner or something to get those sounds...

both those links are quite a bit out of date and fairly innacurate yo... jack had most recently been using a 300w crate blue voodoo.. and they havent used marshall stuff for awhile now.... i highly doubt pat relies alot on any pedals for his distortion... maybe for different sounds n such, but when i saw them....on pats side, i saw no pedalboard, a triple recto on lead mode... and he was running crate bv412's with v30's...
bogner no, but decent equipment.... yes.

Uses it in front for extra gain and eq.
The cabs and Crates are irrelevant. They'll use whatever they get to do the tour.

Last time I saw Metallica play I didn't see any amps on stage,I suppose their sound came from their guitars only

just face it dude... you were wrong...
i saw/heard it clearly... a triple recto... on the red channel(dist),no pedals... and good tone...
metallica uses rectos,mp-1s, and deizels.... and at a huge show like metallica, most of the guitar sound would be from the PA anyways....
but last night was a small venue, maybe like 200-300 people.... not a huge stage.

Yep, when i saw them at the house of blues, i got in before many people did so the first thing i did was go and look at the amps, I saw a Bogner(Vile) a 5150(Exhumed) and a Dual rectifier(Cannibal Corpse) then some rack mounted shit which i couldnt make out. No bands had any pedal boards.

exhumed used a 5150 II & an ada mp-1+ simulclass 2:95 setup.
so that was probably the rack stuff you saw... either that or jack has a rack full of shit.... jack has a couple pedals... a whammy xp-100+midi controller.
but that doesnt count much as a pedalboard.

What kind of amplification are you using?
Peavey 5150 all the way! I have been playing that amp for 10 years, it’s a reliable workhorse and that’s what I need. The sound is also heavy and brutal… you don’t have to fight for the crunch!
Do you use any effects?
In the studio I will use whatever sounds cool that the producer throws at me… when I am on the road I stick to what I know, a simple set up works best for me… no MIDI stuff and rackmounted gear--I have seen the problems that kind of rig can cause! I just have some pedals on the old board on the floor: a Vox wah pedal, Boss DD6 Digital Delay, Boss TU-2 Chromatic tuner, Hush's The Pedal (noise gate). That and the Seymour Duncan pickups -- JB and '59, and the strings (D'Addario -11,15,18, 32, 44, 58)… that stuff through the 5150, those are the tools I use to make some noise!
dont come in here saying retarded shit

Wuh? Where do you get that? Last time I looked on their website and at some interviews, one of the amotts was quoted saying that they use "5150s all the way" because they "don't want to have to fight for a good amount of gain" or something like that. No mention of pedals. Plus Arch Enemy sounds like they use 5150s.

As we place this wretched waste of a man into his final rotting place.
We pray for his soul to be stripped and tormented
of all that is proper, to burn his sins,
In the witness of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Ghost, his soul will fall below the valley of death.
Left to rot forever, to never be free, never return.
