Gym music
You can't listen to violently heavy music and lift weights at the same time unless you're emotionally damaged or particularly stupid. Stuff like Nasum, Nile, Misery Index, Soilent Green, Marduk etc. is just too fucking heavy to let you concentrate.
Why am I bothering to post that?
Because I'm running out of 'gym bands'. I go four times a week, plus cardio, plus other crap and my minidisc collection is starting to give me permanent deja-vu even though I record a new one every week or so.
Stuff that qualifies:
Motorhead
Chimaira
Hatebreed
Pantera
Pissing Razors
Muderdolls
Misfits
Now, I don't want your fucking lumpheaded opinions on these bands, I want to hear about stuff that's like them because I'm running out of gym bands. I'm at my wits end. And that wasn't a long trip.

Seems to me that heavier stuff would pump you up more. But each to his own.
From your list of bands that help you lift, I would go definatly go with:
Mastadon
Crowbar
Sludgy, aggressive, angry, and enough to get your adrenaline pumping.

Ah, behold the irony.
People respond as asked for, constructively to this thread. Yet, they feel a need to bash people who ask for "good metal amplifiers" or "good guitars". People's taste in "gym music" probably differs greatly, just as people's taste in "metal amplifiers" or "good guitars" does.
Sorry if this results in a hi-jack of your thread FBS. That's not my intention, though I do see it as a probably consequence of my reply.

rofl, respect the gym music G urr A!
he didn't ask for the best gym music nor did he state his gym music was the best, so theres no reason to bash anyone, we can all list our own. not that I don't fucking detest murderdolls but hey
I allways listen to:
Machine Head
The Haunted
Obituary
Fear Factory
Pitchshifter
Anthrax
but thats just me.

just started working with weight, usually put on a Saxon vinyll, you can go in the rythm and when the record ends you can switch arms

S'alright. So far, I'm really quite happy.
Def said Pitchshifter. I listen to Pitchshifter! It's uncanny. Unless I'm in the gym I NEVER listen to Pitchshifter. STRANGE. DRUNK. WEIRD. THANG. Anubis suggestions also RULZOR5 MAX1M0M.
It's 4:20am and I'm really, really, really drunk. I blame someone else, and society. In that order.

What about Down? I think they'd be good a good bet. Also try Vision Of Disorder's "From Bliss To Devastation" album.

STOP talking about liquor. My head feels like an over-ripe piece of fruit, and any minute it's going to fucking crack open.
This was actually a very helpful exercise. It's quite scary how many of these bands are already amongst my gym bands, but I got a few new good ones.

I always listen to Pist.On when I lift weights. I don't know what it is about them because their music is depressing but its always seems to get me pumped. Cryptopsy, Nile, or anything with alot of double bass also does it for me as well.

I can concentrate on weight lifting with brutal shit in the background. My favorite form of metal is thrash, but the discs I listen to when I lift weights is almost all death metal. The only time I lose concentration is when somebody starts talking to me, that pissed me the fuck off, because my arms/legs/chest/shoulders/whatever gets weak and I lose count of how many reps I've done.
Anyway, the discs I listen to are few, but they are-
Morbid Angel- Blessed are the Sick
Malevolent Creation- The Ten Commandments (the transition from Memorial
Arrangements to Premature Burial gets me very worked up!)
Monstrosity- Imperial Doom
Monstrosity- Fatal Millenium
Suffocation- Pierced From Within
Suffocation- Breeding the Spawn
Emperor- IX Equilibrium
Emperor- Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise
Forbidden- Forbidden Evil
Those are my most frequent rotations, but I do play other discs. I can only play metal when I lift weights or go for a long walk. Either that or turn on the radio to the baseball game. Depends on the mood, I suppose.

I don't really understand why music helps some of you lift.... meh. I occasionally listen to something I am particularly interested in at the time. I don't listen to Disgorge for lifting and Dark Angel when I'm on the treadmill or something

There are two ways to hit a really big lift... angry or not at all. Metal is totally and completely essential to powerlifting.

I like as much silence in the gym as possible. If you're doing other things like listening to music, you're not focusing enough on the task at hand.

You might have noticed that post was about a year and a half ago, before I started powerlifting. That, and you KNOW I listen to Misery Index when I lift, you big bald fraud.

If your listening to music your really not TRULY focusing on what you are doing, and I mean truly focusing. You may think you are but imo, most of the time a small part of that brain is concentrating on that mad riff or sweet solo or whatever. Usually metal get's me amped and getting amped to work out is silly if you ask me, to get the most efficient workout I want to be calm, in control and breathing properly through sets.
Having said that, maybe some Mozart might help in the gym. I think it's supposed to help with learning and study, maybe it'll help there to

I can't be stuffed writing anything about autonomic arousal, or how other people are so much more distracting than music, or the acute, measurable hormonal effects of heavy music, or even how your gym sessions must resemble two lumps of cottage cheese having a pillowfight with a marshmallow over the last bowl of celery dip at a gay house party.
It's true some people don't train to music, for whatever reason. Some people don't even like metal at all under any circumstances, full stop, period, no returns. Probably not you though, considering you're here.
But I can say this with great confidence: the vast majority of huge, monstrous men who lift huge, monstrous weights listen to huge, monstrous music. Go to a powerlifting meet and look at the bald, scary men who put insane weights up. When they're waiting in the bay ready to lift, the music in their headphones is definitely some face-ripping stuff. A lot of powerlifting meets even play metal over the PA between lifts or before attempts. Also, I've read an absolute ton of training articles about what music people listen to - on the balance of things, I think Slayer comes out most popular, closely followed by Pantera, Hatebreed and the various Rollins incarnations.
As yet, I haven't seen Mozart mentioned.

I seem to have a Hydrahead thing going on when I'm workin' out.
Pelican
Isis
Neurosis
Jesu
Cult of Luna
Old Man Gloom
Mare
I just seem to prefer slow, tormented music while I'm pumping those abs.

Fair enough, I don't really know exactly what 'powerlifting' is but if it's what I think it is - guys who put huge weights on, only do like 4 reps and look like they are constipated because they are struggling so much to lift it, then I guess you'd want to be amped for that. But for me, that's useless, too much muscle mass only slows you down and makes you a much easier target to take down.

No I said TOO MUCH muscle MASS which imo does slow you down. Strong toned relaxed muscles are much quicker than ridiculously big ones.
From my experience big roided out tanks are slower than my grandma on valium. Which makes it so much easier to open their guard up and take down in one or two quick hits. I can only speak from a martial arts point of view though. Btw I came to this conclusion myself, there was no 'propoganda' involved.

Who really wants to fight anyway? I know I certainly don't. And I especially don't go around PICKING fights. A lot of this has to do with swallowing your ego and letting petty little problems go.
However, there are certain situations that call for those measures, such as you might be out having a drink one night and some big drunk meathead/s decides to have a go at at you. I take solace in knowing I am capable of disposing of them in a quick and efficient manner and getting on with my night.

That's fine man, you be what you want to be. But please don't make the common mistake of judging someone by their size, some of the smallest men I know would send some of the largest men in the world flying across a room with one strike. The power of 'chi' in 100 times more powerfull than any muscle.

hey im not saying im an advocate of fighting, ive never been in a fight in my life.
and in terms of metnal effect most people are more intimidated by a huge guy than a smaller well toned guy, and that can be used to advantage by people in jobs and stuff like that. besides, the strongest guy in the world could not throw a punch to save his life
anyways this thread is about fitness not who can kick more ass! youre fit and im working on being fit so congrats and keep it up

Lol I think this thread is about music you listen to at the gym
So I think i'll make this my last post here before FBS kicks some ass.
Very true about the intimidation thing though. I find our male behaviour to be quite funny at times. Unfortunatly, on a larger scale, I think it's one of the main reasons our world has gotten so messed up in the first place.
Edit - To set myself straight, I typed powerlifting into google and realised it is or is going to be an olympic sport. Much to my mistake, it's not just the guys you see in gym lifting shit that looks like it's way too heavy for them . I would only know powerlifting as weight lifting. I never really knew there was an official name for it. Those guys must have to live in a gym to be able to keep that strength up.

I have no intention of kicking any kind of arse. This has all the hallmarks of an actual, civil conversation. FOR ONCE. Scarcely believable, but here we are. Anyway, this is supposed to be a music thread and here I am breaking my own rules. Fucking hypocrisy. We can argue about training in the 'argue about training' thread.
Back on topic - can someone tell me something about Isis? One of the best SHW lifters and all-around superbly knowledgable guys (whose stuff on speed training I just read) SWEARS BY THEM as a training band.

well, FBS if you have AIM i can try and dig some up for you. its like, well its closer to hardcore than it is to death metal vocally. its kind of doomy i guess, 10 minute songs or so. i can see how itd be a good lifting band if you were to blast it
and yeah dude i thought i was in the wrong thread! the reason this one has intellgent discussion probably has to do with the abscence of a few people
i honeslty think without music i wouldnt be able to push myself as hard as i could

I'm here.
You know when you guys are talking about lean and mean vs. muscular its like cars. One might need a 4x4 to climb mountains and go through snow, but someone else might want something sleek with speed. If you're into martial arts you're building yourself for one thing, but if you're lifting it's something different. Your body is a different tool for a different activity. Neither is right or wrong. They're just different.
And even wimpy me could use a well placed move on someone and do damage. It just depends on what it is. Denny told me to go for the eyeballs if I'm ever attacked. To the second knuckle. Size wouldn't matter if I could do that.
