new slayer
i hope its better then god hates us all but im not holding my breath
"Blabbermouth.net reports, Slayer guitarist Kerry King recently spoke to Metal Edge magazine about the songwriting process for the group's long-awaited follow-up to 2001's "God Hates Us All".
"We've got twelve new songs, and we were playing before [drummer] Dave [Lombardo] went back out with Fantomas, minimal lyrics, but we got twelve songs that are 90 percent done. We just have to go in and record them. Then we come to find out that [American Records head honcho] Rick Rubin's deal is up again with Universal, and I will lay million-to-one odds he ain't there in two months. So for us to put out a record doesn't make sense right now, because if we put it out on Universal, they would have it for two months and they wouldn't promote it. Then, whichever company would pick it up wouldn't promote it, because it would have been out for two months, so it's just as well. But there might be another DVD with Dave on it, we are talking about that right now."
With regards to whether Dave had a say in the new material, Kerry said, "I mean, when [guitarist] Jeff [Hannemann] brings stuff in, they are on a drum machine, but I still record my riffs the way I did twenty years ago — I just put them on that same jam box, with a Radio Shack mic, because I am too lazy to get into the digital eight-track, and the drum machine. I know it's fun, I know it's easy, but I would rather take a tape down and say, 'Dave, here you go.' He is like, 'Really, I got an idea for that there.' I am like, 'Show me what you got.' I will turn him loose on it, because he might think of something I never did — he is the drummer. If it is just not floating, I will say, 'Well, this is what I had in mind, try this.' One or the other is going to be pretty kick-ass."
Asked what the major difference is between and Dave and former drummer Paul Bostaph's drumming styles, Kerry replied, "Dave definitely brings something else to the puzzle — the way he plays is more rootsy and organic, and he is the guy that could just get up in the morning and play anything. He doesn't have to work at it, ho don't got to practice, he is a natural. So he brings things to the table that are so rudimentary, btu so cool. You would never think of them because they are so simple. He will bring something up like, 'Why don't we do this?' I will be like, 'Damn, never thought of that…' He is more punky than Bostaph as well. Dave is big-time into the old Southern Cal punk, like all of us are, so it's just a different vibe. I mean, it was good, and 'God Hates Us All', with Bostaph, is probably Bostaph's crowning achievement. The next one, I think, is going to be like 'God Hates Us All', with a twist of 'Seasons [In The Abyss]' mixed in it, because Dave brings something else to the table. It is going to take awhile."

The fact that the last two albums are stagnant shit, I'm sure anything can top them. But don't hold your breath on it.

I know I do.
Besides, why concentrate on Slayer when you've got new stuff from Kreator, Testament, Voivod, Sodom, Megadeth, King Diamond, and Blind Guardian?

GHUA was a little better than diabolus, so i think dave will help slayer put out a decent album, but no 2004 reign in blood.
however, i am a slayer fan, i will take a listen of the album when it comes out.
but, divine intervention was there last good effort, and nothing will top reign or south of heaven.

I hope they just play in Eb tuning like all the good shit was done in, and not this B tuning crap. But this is with Dave and I hope he tells the guys "NO" when something crappy is brought in, also we need a good slayer album to get over the loss of Pantera.
My 2 cents.

Souls to Deny is great.
Divine Intervention is my fav Slayer album...i don't see them going back to Eb tuning anytime...if anything they'll pull another Undisputed Attitude...but you can claim Diabolis or GHUA is Undisputed Part 2.
all i know is i won't be running to the store to buy the new album the first day again.

GHUA was a great album. i dont care if it had nu-metal elements or what ever in it, its fucking awsome... i cant wait for a new slayer album and i hope its more like GHUA then their older stuff, because though thier older stuff was better, i dont think thier good enough anymore to play that kind of shit.
and i happen to realy like slayers drummer from GHUA. dave is better but who ever played on GHUA was also very kickass...

Yeah, Divine Intervention was my first Slayer album and I thought it was amazing until I got Reign In Blood and Seasons In The Abyss. But, I do believe that Divine Intervention is criminally underrated.

I was just thinking, I wonder what the new Slayer album is gonna be like?
Now that dave is back I have hope that it won't be that bad. It would be nice if they did some old school material no GHUA shit. Although GHUA could have been a lot worse. I just hope they don't half ass this album. I want something that'll kick ass.

If it has ANY God Hates Us All in it, then it's not worth buying. I'll probably download it out of spite, and then delete it when I see how much it will invariably suck. If the moons and planets align and it turns out I'm wrong, I'll go out and buy it. However, we all know that's not going to happen.

Slayer: Raining Blood...........Literally
SLAYER fan site Slayer saves has posted a review of the group's July 11 show in Augusta, Maine, which was filmed for an upcoming live DVD, entitled "Reign in Blood Live: Still Reigning". As previously reported, the disc will feature a full performance of the 1986 album "Reign in Blood" by all original members of the veteran thrash metal outfit. The DVD, due on September 28, will have an approximate 75-minute running time and will retail for $14.98. An excerpt from the Slayer Saves review follows:
"The band took a short encore pause from 'Angel of Death' to 'Piece by Piece', same as they did on the Jager tour. Blood rained from the lighting rig upon the beginning of 'Raining Blood' soaking Tom and bloodying Kerry (Jeff avoided the bulk of the blood). The only adverse result of the blood was it killed the sound of Dave's cymbals for the end of the song when once again it poured blood soaking everything including the drums. The effect was quite striking and the crowd was blown away. A blood soaked Tom addressed the cheering crowd with a sneering smile and the words 'We'll see you in HELL.' Comments from people leaving the venue were positive and I think the show was received extremely well. The blood effect was amazing and worth every penny alone." Read the entire review at this location.

That pretty cool, but god damn i hated that bloodline video. Just seeing jeff's old Jackson covered in blood I know Kerry is a whore and has like 348635837463846534865324684723 different B.C. Rich's but Jeff dosent have porbably more than 5 guitars on tour.

Holy shit... They played Fight Till Death? Badass... I figured if they'd play anything off the first album, it would probably be "Black Magic", that seems to be the one they ALWAYS play... Nice to see them throw a huge changeup with that tracklist.

Dude I know I've got the video on DVD and all I could think of was, " I hope they have RainX on those guitars, or that those guitars are fucked up beyond all repair and are just video guitars"! The blood thing is cool but I would be back stage cleaning my guitar off so fast! Also, Die By The Sword... I wish they played it on the radio, because it doesn't sound old at all and rocks live!

You are pretty correct, my collection goes from SNM to Reign, and goes to Decade of Agression, then Soundtrack... guess I just like old stuff too.

After Seasons it went way down hill. I think God Hates Us All reminded me of a Deicide album. With Slayer trying way to hard to be "satanic". The music went too simple. Some songs were alright but most sucked ass. Their new album better sound like Reign In Blood or I shall be pissed.

I own all albums up to Divine Intervention.
Listening to their more recent stuff doesn't compare to the old stuff. I find the leads have not progressed at all with the newer material. It sounds recycled to my ears which leads to boredom and thoughts of "didn't they already use that solo 5 years ago?"
Reign in Blood is not my favourite album by Slayer (due to a couple of songs that feel like fillers to me). Seasons was the door opener for them when I was in highschool. Everybody liked that one. Slayer was my favourite band growing up in highschool but not anymore. Perhaps I listened to them too much?
Still, they completely kicked ass with their albums up to Divine Intervention.
New stuff? I reluctantly wait...

SLAYER frontman Tom Araya recently spoke to the Tucson Citizen about the group's July 11 show in Augusta, Maine which was recorded for an upcoming live DVD. The band, who played the 1986 album "Reign In Blood" from start to finish at the gig, were focused on just the final minute of "Raining Blood", the closing song on the 10-track record.
"It's kind of like little kids waiting for a new toy. 'Here it comes. Here it comes,' " Araya said, laughing. "The effect we were trying to achieve only happens at the end of the album, the last minute ... . And when it happened, it was great."
Araya was a bit cagey about the specifics of the special effect that made him so giddy, but he offered a clue. "The album title gives it away. It looked really, really cool."
"Reign in Blood" was SLAYER's third album and the first produced by Rick Rubin for his Def Jam label. Araya wants Rubin to produce SLAYER's next album, which he hopes will see the band in the studio by the end of the year.
"If not Rubin, someone like Rubin, who will work like Rubin. In other words, who will be a part of the process," Araya said, adding that Rubin is very hands-on and acts, necessarily, like a "referee" for SLAYER. Rubin was somewhat involved in the band's 2001 album, "God Hates Us All", in terms of financing and suggesting who should do the final mix.
"He's got an ear for sounds and for talent ... to find people who are really good at what they do," Araya said.
A dozen songs have been written for the forthcoming album, with just some tinkering and lyrics to be done. Because of Ozzfest, Araya notes, the band is in "pause mode." The record, Araya promises, will sound like SLAYER. "You can take my word on it that it will always be very SLAYER," he says. "We'll stick to the core." Read more

I agree that the old Slayer was a hell of alot better that the new Slayer. My 3 favorite albums are hell awaits, reign in blood, and seasons. their new stuff isnt near as good as their old stuff. But maybe the new album will be better with dave back.

RiftRock.com: Has Dave Lombardo re-entering the fold had any influence on the new material?
Jeff Hanneman: "Oh yeah, anytime you have a drummer like Dave that's an amazing drummer, he's always a big influence, he'll tell us where we should have a pause, where we should stop at parts."

Guitarist JEFF HANNEMAN Talks About His Favorite SLAYER Album
More slayer
In a recent interview with KNAC.com , SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman was asked to name his favorite SLAYER album. "I hate to say it, but probably 'Reign In Blood'," Jeff replied. "Not just because of what other people think of it — it's more like at that time that album was stamped into my memory because things were really starting to change for us and things were starting to get professional and serious, and that's the first time we had a tour bus and a real record label. And we put that album down… I don't know how long it took us, but everything was done, everything was fast, everything was good. In fact, you've probably heard this, but our biggest scare on that record is that once we got finished with it we checked the time and it was like 28 minutes. We were like, 'Holy shit. Too short!' [Laughs] So we sat there with [producer Rick] Rubin and thought, 'Does it sound great? Yes. Do we all like it? Yes. Fuck it!' [Laughs]"
With regards to the songwriting process in SLAYER, Hanneman said, "We just basically — we always start with music. So I'll come up with something at home, or Kerry [King] will come up with something. And eventually — you know, because I can do my stuff at home because I have a new 24-track and a drum machine, so if I get an idea, I can run with it as far as I can get it. Then I'll bring it to these guys and play it, see what they think, and Kerry will add a riff or Dave [Lombardo] will say something about 'Change it here' or 'Change it there' and Kerry does the same thing. And then when we get together we try to get the basic structure of the song done, and then we kinda know where the lyrics go and where the leads go. That's when the lyrics start falling into place, and the song will change here and there; but it's all done spontaneously, it's not like — we don’t sit down around a table before the album comes out and have a meeting on what the album is going to sound like. It's whatever we're into."

I have hope still but I know its gonna suck. If its anything like GHUA then it wont be worth buying. It should be more Seasons mixed with Reign in Blood.

I liked Hell Awaits and Reign the best, Necrophiliac was so damn good live, it just seemed like Tom/Kerry/Jeff were having such a good time playing live. I think Slayer will not dissapoint with the new album.

I was too! (moncton) Fucking damageplan started playing while i was still in line. I wanted to fucking see dime so i just walked to the front and asked this old dude (security) politely if he could escort me to a washroom so i could piss and then escort me back out. So the old dude turns to another security guy, says "this guy has to piss, but i trust him". So i walked in to the washroom, took a leak, then walked straight to the pit. Only missed 1 song while the people i was with missed half the fucking set.
and tom's a bitch. He kept whining the whole time. Kept stoppin the set saying we were "too rough". And the pit wasn't rough at all. Fucking damageplan stole the fucking show. Heavy shit. Specially when they played "walk" and "a new level"

Tom Araya switched from fingers TO picks, I don't know why. I don't play bass, but I would think picks would be better?

I prefer picks for bass, simply cause im a guitarist and i dont have time to build up speed with my fingers. Picks give more attack too. I sound like poo poo cacka without a pick

Why did Tom Araya change to picks? Because it's a lot fucking harder to play with your fingers...especially for "tremolo picking"

Since ive never replied to this thread, or read any of it, I guess ill just give my opinion: I dont like new slayer.
EDIT: now i just saw the last few posts after mine. And I thought i might add that i dont use a pick. And i only play guitar. I just use my first finger's nail. Its not long but i just angle it right and i can do everthing ive done with a pick but better. Some people say its weird but it really works great for me. No matter what im playing, a guitar pick just slows me down somehow . So im content without one.

yeah. when i play everyone looks real close at my finger. But its not that hard. when i sweep up i just angle it to where the edge of it is hitting the strings like the end of a pick. And for pinchs, its just like a pick: right when my nail picks it, my thumb is right there to tap the string just like when i hold a pick.

GHUA is a great album, i dont get why people hate it. true it sound a little nu-metalyish but hell its still got the slayer spirit. Threshold is probably the only metal song w/o a solo i realy like.
anywayz... id sure like a new slayer album, iv played my slayer cds so much i think thier wearing out....

though I could be wrong.
Slayer still has decent thrash music, though I always prefer to listen to the older material.
