Choosing Guitar
Well, I finally decided to get one....yeah, a guitar..anyways I want to know some basics as far as what to look for. I have about $750 to drop on both the guitar and amp, and most likely a good book or two (video maybe?). Anyways, I'm into Black & Death Metal and was wondering what to look for as far as replicating those sounds (Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borguir, Cradle of Filth, etc). What did you guys start out with? I want something to learn on but not have to toss in a few months once I get the hang of it. Also, do you guys reccomend any certain books I pick up? Any help is appreciated--

I played guitar for 3 years on my dad's ol' acoustic. Then I bought a Strat-clone from a friend.
If you're new to guitar playing, I'd really suggest getting something cheap (like an acoustic) and use that until you learn to play. Then use up your $750+[whatever you saved up while you waited] and get some good stuff.
For guitars, I like Jackson, because the Jackson necks I've played have been nice. I don't like Ibanez too much, b/c of IMO very thin necks, but that's a matter of taste. ESPs seem to have nice necks IMO. Gibsons are generally too thick for me, and do not usually have 24 frets, which is something I require.
For an amp, I'd say, unless you're going to be in a band straigt away, buy a multi-effect that is capable of speaker modelling. That's IMO the best bang for your buck if you're going to play with yourself.
And, if you're unsure of what to get, play it and decide for yourself. Usually, what feels best in your hands and sounds best in your ears, is what's you're going to be most satisfied with.

Go to a local music store and try out guitars in amps of which are in your price range. See which ones you like and decide what one you want.

you could always try and search for a second hand guitar, i found a kickass aria pro II for £40 in a shop. Its fucking kickass.
anyways i sugest getting a nice comfortable guitar which plays fairly well, so maybe check out an ibanez s series guitar or a jackson warrior. Very nice guitars and pretty good aswell. But i'd stay away from esp ltd's, not to good from my experience, a bit tacky. As for amps just get a little 60 watter practice amp thing and maybe a distortion pedal etc to liven it up and then go from there.

Well, I've been looking on ebay & whatnot, and I see that the squire telecasters go fpr pretty cheap. Do any of those have 24 frets? Oh, and there's an ESP going for pretty cheap there too. It's anLTD M-50, anyone have one of those? This is it, tell me if I should go for it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ssPageName=WDVW
Thanks.

Thiers plenty threads about this, use the search function. And check harmony-central.com for reviews. If you can go and play all the guitar in your priced range and buy the one YOU like best.

if you're in the new market, a decent guitar will run you over $400, i like to look at new guitars and compare prices, then see what the same guitars go for used.... i have an ibanez rg 570, they go new for $500-$600 sale price not list price...... i bought it used for $150 with a hardcase from a friend. plop on some sperzel locking tuners($50), disabled the trem, throw in a dimarzio tone zone for the bridge($50), and it needed a new switch($5)... sand down the neck, blah blah.. now it sounds and plays great. it has it's scars, but it's all skin deep.
most ltd, squire, epiphone type brands are shit, some are nice but the nicer ones are the more expensive ones....
pickups are way important.
if pickups say duncan designed or duncan preformer, they're shit... seymoure duncan is the real deal.. dimarzios are great... the only good emg's imo are the active ones that require batteries... if they say hz then they're no good...
no name pickups are often crap so on and so on.
it's kinda personal choice really... hell my parents bought me my first guitar when i was like 12 or 13.... $100 cort strat... it blew and it got stolen, then i had an epi sg, traded it for an empty 4x12... now i have both of my ibanezs and i like em alot...

There are plenty of starter packages out as well by Ibanez, fender, gibson and a few others. They are not the best but it will get you started and then you can save some money and if you like playing you can upgrade later. Most of the packages are around 250-300 dollars and then you can buy a Dist. pedal as well.

i had a gfx 30 too a long time ago.... i kinda stole it.... i don't know why... i was a friend's house and it was just there, i was like "dude you play bass right? why do you need this?" he was like "so and so left it here ago and i havent seen him for like a year.." but i now know why he ditched it...i took it, horrid clean, bad distortion and the lo quality fx just stopped working.... i left it at a friends house once i got a halfstack, went back several months later to get it so i could sell it...and somebody jacked it much like i had aquired it in the first place... lesson of the story, the gfx series blows... just about any other crate s.s. series sounds better.

Well, I checked Harmony Central for a cetrain ESP and It's pretty awesome from what they say (compotable to $1000+ guitars), You can see it here http://www.digitalplayroom.com/esp/kh202.htm , It's an ESP, and from what you guys said the cheap ESP's blow but I kinda like their styl, I don't really know why. If anyone else has this guitar and would like to throw in their two cents that be awesome, I now need to decide on the Amp and pedal. Thanks for the continued support.

most ltd's suck, higher end ones are okay, but a real esp will say esp on the headstock....
it's the same concept as epiphone-gibson, squire-fender.

hey dude i ve played that guitar and i hated it. It just felt cheap, more cheap than a shitty encore starter guitar i had at the time. If u want a guitar like that, get a esp ltd m 202 or somet like that, my mates got one and its pretty sweet, not the best guitar ever but its got a fairly nice neck, not like most ltd's with fuckin huge thick necks and its cheap.
