hearing the bass over the guitars
My band is sounding great but I have a small Ibanez amp and a much larger hartke amp. and they have told me to use the small one for gigs. and when I use it I can't hear myself at all cuz theguitars over power me really bad. and when I asked the why they told me to use the small one our singer said that the bass should not be heard. and I told him to shut the fuck up and learn how the sing. 
But what do you think should the bass be heard over the guitars or at the same volume.
I say The bass and guitars should be kinda equal but the bass a little louder 
What do you guys think

I like the bass to be prominant in a band.
I'm not into music that drowns the bass out. Why bother with a bassist if that's your view on music.

the bass should be heard, maybe not alot but it depends on the song that you are playing. oh yeah get a new singer for your band.

oh yes, I had the same problem! And I had a 10 watt Ibanez amp too. The drums and the guitar were much louder and I can'z hear my bass. But I think if there is a bassist in the band, you should hear it. Personally, I like to hear the bass. And that's the opinion of all bassists I think.

The bass should not overpower the guitars, thats not its purpose. But it should still be heard. Iron Maiden is a good example of what the level if bass should be, you can definetly hear it.. but it dosent over power the guitars, it just adds much needed low end because maiden uses strats. But as guitars start to tune lower it will be much harder for the bass to be heard.. thats why you do what Cryptopsy and Cannibal Corpse do.

Pagan Prosperity by OMC is the best ex. I think of the volume should be...loud . Yeah, it should by the same vol. as the guitars, but not too much "bassy" tone, the drums should cover that part.

Yeah I want to sound like Maiden but every time I turn up the amp to kinda equal the guitars they turn up their amps too. So I am like ASSHOLES!!!!!!!

By the way how does Steve Harris (a fucking bass GOD) get the sound he does. Cuz I haven't heard anyone else get that sound. And I want to get that sound.

If the bass is there, then it should be doing it's role. I'm a little biased being a bassist (and a rather fanatic at that), but everything should have it's purpose in the band. I can think of a few bands that have lead bassists and sounds quite euphonious, while I can think of bands with no bassist that sound equally as good. It should be decided while you make your musical direction more than just show by show. Any musician can turn his instrument up loud, but that doesn't always mean better music.
If they don't want you, then why not just leave the band?

I didn't swing at him cuz he is all weak and if I hit him he will be grounded by his mom and that doesn't help the band much. But yeah I always put that bitch in his place. he sux at singing anyways. yeah the guitarists understand me and they want me to use the hartke its just the singer kinda paid for it and is being a asshole. but it belongs to me. he bought it for my birthday last year but he is a selfish asshole. and he sux at getting the high notes....in fact he sux at all the notes. The problem with my band is we need a new singer.

Man, if your singer is an arrogant cock, you need to either shove your fist into his face and get him to show you some respect, or you need to verbally have it out with him about the fact that he's a cunt.
The best thing for a band to have is a harmonious atmosphere. These type of issues need to be sorted out immediately. You can't let crap like this fester.
My solution would be to confront the singer about his attitude, with the band behind you. If you make it apparent that it's not just you, but the band as well, that thinks he's being a whiny fuck, then he's more likely to listen to reason.
If he doesn't like it, tell him straight:
"Get your act together, stop being a dick or get the fuck out of our band".
Then he can bitch all he wants.

i am lucky that the guitarists in my band love bass and the drummers opionion is worth nothing because he sucks. the guitarists want me to get an ampeg svt 8x10 so i can play louder then them. too bad i a poor.

Im not a bassist, but i definetly agree that a bass should have an active purpose in a band. Like bass solos (Cannibal Corpse) Or weird ass bass slaps (Cryptopsy) Im sick of bands just ignoring the potentional of a bass. I mean cmon... guitar solo.. keyboard solo.. bass solo... it would kick ass

hell yeah man thats what I have been telling the guitarists. but they are all gay and don't want to make original songs. I told them that we have to stop playing cover. becuz if we don't no one will take us seriously. I think it is our singers fault for sucking at making lyrics and singing them.

i would have slapped him... seriously if you can't get along with your band mates, then you're going nowhere.
bass should not neccisarily be heard "over" the guitars.... it should be heard "threw" them imo... the pulling from the counter point melodies and the thump is what most people like from alot of songs, they just don't know it because they hear the guitars and they feel the bass.
if everytime you turn up your amp the guitarists turn theirs up, get a bigger amp. hell, for my bass rig i have an acoustic control fullstack... 350w head and a 4x15 cab... no volume problems for me. because that rig sounds HUGE. i'm selling it though because i want a 4x10 cab and a 1x18... easier to move two medium sized cabs than one huge cab... the 4x15 is as tall and wide as an 8x10 but like twice as deep and quite a bit heavier.. i have no roadies.... luckily i play guitar in my main band.
i'm not really biased towards any side becaue i play everything, guitar,drums,bass,singing(some),hell even a little keyboard... in my band i play guitar, then we have another guitarist,a drummer, and a vocalist... no bass. we do some weird shit and we've tried the bass thing before, but the cool bassists suck so they arent good enough... and the good bassists are either taken or they have a cocky attitude that makes them useless to the music world.
so we work around it...

We used to do that during lunch when i was in high school... some chick would provide the tampon then we would get some redish drink and soak the tampon. then just toss it...

I agree.... they should be heard (although i am a guitarist and never played bass before) i do agree everyone should be heard... i love how cannibal corpse does it... listen (watch) to them live... you can deffinately hear the bass.... and alex does some shreddin bass solo's

I'm going to make a prog band (LTE type stuff) because im too damn stupid to write riffs that go together at all. So I guess bass will be have to be heard in my band. The only band that I was kinda in didnt have a bassist. Sometimes I've noticed that you cant really hear it but without it the song doesnt sound right. Of course my ear is messed up and i cant hear bass for crap.

Firstoff that singer is a douchefor saying that, he probably listens to nu-metal (which has like 0 bass) so his opinion doesn't matter. Second, I think that the bass should be heard for being the bass. I find it best tohave all the instruments doing seperate things but allworking together to make everything sound good. I don't like it when people base the Bass off of the Guitars, or the Guitar and Vocals and stuff like that. I'm not all agianst it happening sometimes because sometimes that what you havta do, but when people just count out all other possibilitys, thats when you limit yourself....

I dont know but when u find out let me know so i can shuve it up u ass. man I didn't know there was a thread like this. it was my first thread and i needed the help as soon as possiably so i started a new thread instead of looking through old threads for shit i probably wont need. besides the band is going great we kicked that gay singger out and we are letting the lead guitarist sing for now we kinda sound like Black Label Society. ZAKK WYLD RULEZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and we won the battle of the bands last month it was sweet. oh and thanks for all the help guys. finally u can hear the bass and now that we kicked the singer out we made a couple of orgnals and we have some sweet basslines in there and this one song its all about the bass cuz I play the main riff so the guitars lower their amps and then its time for me to steal the show.
