Post Fates Warning - No Exit - distortion

Been listening to some older stuff lately, and I picked out my Fates Warning No Exit CD as one of my favs from back then, they have an awesome distorted sound,( real sustained type sound, hard to describ the sound they get ) anyone know what amps/FX they used back then or how to get their sound, I am thinking about getting a Marshall JCM 900 I found in a guitar store in, or either a 5150 2X12 combo out one of the 2 which would give better metal sounds with less "non needed fx" to have to buy to get good loud distorted sounds without alot of unwanted hiss.

thanks

um, the 5150 will have more gain and a better clean imo. but if you want a more marshall sound then buy the marshall.

It all depends on what YOU want, personally id go for the 5150, im not a big marshall fan and i have a big hard on for 5150's But that might now be the case for you. Some lvoe the sound of a 5150, others hate it. So just goto samash (they sell marshall's and peavey's) and see if they have the amps their.
