What do you think of Genres?

is Genres a band, or are you talking about labels that people give to music?

Hes probably talking about catagories... In which this thread would fall into the wrong catagory, being in the "bands" and all.
I take it that you dont like catagories/genres Josh Smith. "Fuck Genres". I personally dont have a problem with them. Everything else falls into catagories, so why shouldnt music. It sure is helpful when your looking for bands. For ex. if you were to look up a band for the first time and see that it was labled as punk, and you knew that you didnt like punk, you could easily save time and not proceed. Thats not even a good example... But then again, you havent exactly explained what it is you dislike about genres so I cant really reply to well. As for me, genres help. If i were looking up a band and it fell under viking metal, I would be damn sure to give it a listen. Sometimes i find that bands fall into a different genre than i would put them in, but its not that big of a deal. What is it you dont like anyway?...

If you are telling your friend about a band and they are like "What kind of music do they play?" it's easier to say punk or metal and they will get the point. Nothing wrong with that.

oh boy, dont even get me started on genres. I think you have all heard enough of my rants to know that i fucking hate genres.

i only do the major divisions (death, black, power). but if somthing inside those divisions sound different enough, i'll use a new sub-genre (melodic death inside death to give an example).

that's it.

nothing wrong with genres, but rating a band before you hear them just because of their genre is a bit stupid, as is thinking "My genre's better than your genre" - genres are made for people's tastes, and if you dont like a certain genre, remember that other people may.

I like the genre system. There just needs to be more unity to it, people just make genres when they cant think of one that theyre bands music fits. It gives poeple a more sense of what type of music it is, not just plain metal. Metal in one mans opinion could be guys in spandex with big girly hair running around on stage talking about sex with 5 min solos and neon guitars, while others could be thinking of insane riffs, blast beats, and unholy growls. It helpd people desipher who you are.

genres in music is understandable (but can venture into the extreme. Just ask for all the genres of metal).
The same goes for genres of books, games, etc.

But genres of social stature are just signs of insecurity.

i guess its not necessarily music genres in general that i hate its more how people abuse them. Pisses me off when people call a band a "poser" because they are "trying" to be a genre. Who said the band was trying? They are just being themselves and yet they are posers.

Also when people are afraid to like a band because they are in a genre that is looked down upon.

They're good for trying something new. For example: Let's say someone wanted to mix three-chord punk with black metal vocals or something. Seeing since noone would know what to call it people would just sub-divide it into something like "Black-punk" or whatever. So they are good. Keep em.

If you've ever tried writing a serious music review without a single appeal to something genre-related, you'll understand how hard communication in words about music is. Describing music is inevitably comparative, especially when you do a lot of it. Say you reviewed three middle-tier death metal bands all at the same time, and they all sound the same, and derivative. What are your options?

(Of course any good reviewer will have to go much further, and talk both in and out of genre/context.)

In conclusion, they're only genuinely annoying when stupid teenagers on the internet throw them around like Nerf footballs.

I will support genres until something is officially classified as "self-manipulation-core". Then, all bets are off.

Genres are fine if you don't go silly with them. I guess, it's almost impossible to avoid however, when in comparison to one another, almost all bands sound a little bit different to one another. I think a good rule is to probably ignore any genre with more than two words in it?

Metal's fairly diverse & so you're simply not going to be able to avoid genre talk. You can't just call yourself 'metal' if you're a death metal freak but hate power meatl now, can you?

Thats not too bad of a rule. But it doesnt suit me as well, I think it is important to differ the "death metal" from the "melodic death metal", it helps me out anyway. More than three words is definately too many though.

It's very hard to describe a band without saying which genre they belong to and who they sound like/draw influences from. It just can't be done in a succinct manner.

For example, you could describe a band thus: "Gutteral vocals sit atop fast riffs with complex rhythms and time structures to a backing of intense blast-beating" when in fact it is just easier and more universally understood to say "technical death metal".

I think the best reviews state early what genre a band belongs to and then depict what sets (or doesn't set) them apart from the rest of that genre. The only way we decide if something new is good is by comparing to something that we are already familiar with. For example, the new Suffocation album - I haven't heard it but I bet everyone who has and who also own Effigy Of The Forgotten will have drawn a comparison between the two.

What I'm trying to say is that genres are a good way of letting you know what you are in for and allow us to draw comparisons to music that we already know.

I have a new concept of genres now, one that I thought up at 2 in the morning lastnight(or today). Sub genres are fine, but any words after that are just extras to more pinpoint the kind of music a band plays.

Ex: Slow Sexually-Frustrated melodic Death Metal.

Genres are a good indixcator. But people who abusively streamline their taste into one genre and then proceed to keep a Nazi like rule on their little genre is an idiot.

Why would you hate genres? they seperate good music from bad music.

Not true. You like metal, I assume? It's "good music" to you, right? Are there any metal bands that you would classify as "bad music?"

I think metal is good(in general), but I don't think just because music is of a certain genre it makes it bad music or good music(although a lot of times that happens, I have trouble finding good nu-metal bands).
